Arsenal In Very Lucky Escape

Arsenal In Very Lucky Escape

It has been revealed that Arsenal are one very very lucky club.

In 2001 Arsenal entered negotiations with Bayern Munich over the possibility of the purchase of England midfielder Owen Hargreaves.

However, the North London club struck gold when the German side said the player was not for sale.

The revalations were made known when Hargreaves said in an interview that both teams from North London had come in for him at some point.

He said,

'I spoke to Arsenal after we won the Champions League in 2001 and at the time Bayern didn't want to release me.

'I spoke to Tottenham two years ago when we'd just got a new manager at our club so I said 'I'll wait and see.'

'Basically those are the only two concrete offers I have ever had from England. With Bayern being the club they are, it would be difficult to leave just to go to any old club in England.

'There would be no reason to leave Bayern after winning the double two years in a row, just to play in England for the sake of it.'

It's not that I don't rate Owen Hargreaves, but lets face it, he's crap.

I'm still undecided about Hargreaves to be honest - I've never been overly impressed by his performances, he seems fairly average. But he is a first team choice for Bayern and has just won his second double, so can he be all that bad?

agree with that pitythefool, i dont rate him at all and there are better players out there that can do a good job for england

Ahh.. the mighty blogger has insights about football unknown to Ottmar Hitzfeld, Felix Magath, Sven Goran Eriksson and Asene Wenger. In addition of multiple trophies as a 1st team Bayern player Hargreaves was 1st team for England in the last World Cup until he was injured against Argentina. Not bad for a 21 year old. In reality, he would have been the ideal addition to Arsenal at that time. A holding midfielder who excels in set pieces.

Hargreeves is crap when we talk about english playing abroad we here good of them bu i have never heard of hagreeves

If I were to believe you that Hargreaves was a decent holding midfielder who excelled at set pieces, I'd say this to you..........He only excels in Germany (which I dont believe btw) on an international basis he is a very poor player, can you give me one incident in which he was involved that benefitted our national team? If he can't adapt at a national level, what hope has he of adapting to the premiership? BTW - I'm pretty sure Henry excels a little bit more at set pieces than OH!!!

I think that if arsenal had bought hargreaves he wld hav bin a success. At arsenal he would hav dun rly well, but by staying at byern he has damaged his carrer. Arsene and co. cld hav turned him into a mediocr player into a massive success. bt now its too late for him. we dont need a playa like that anymor tho coz at d moment we hav gilberto hu is doin rly well n wen he retires or woteva Abou Diaby wil b amazin. I rly think that Abou wil b beta than Viera eva was. I find it hard to say that Theo will be as good as Thierrym although he wil still b gd, bt I rly think Abou wil end up being the best player of his position in the world.

ArsenalRob - I won't even pretend I understood a word you just wrote. For the benefit of humankind, please write in something vaguely resembling English!

Rocky7.. Hargreaves was coming along very nicely in the England starting XI at the 2002 World Cup. Unfortunately he was injured during the Argentina game. His relentless motor and pace would have been useful in the 2nd half against Brazil. I would also consider the Champions League to be of 'international' quality and Hargreaves was solely responsible for shutting down World Player of the Year Luis Figo in the 2001 Final. Don't believe me that he is a capable holding player - believe the esteemed managers mentioned above. Secondly, do I think Henry is better on set pieces than Hargreaves? Of course. But having other options can only help the versatiliy and flexibility of the team. As Arsene would say 'it gives us another option'. Particularly on corners .. Frankly it's absurd that our best finisher is taking corners.. He should be finishing..
