Arsenal Starlet On His Way Out

Derby County boss Billy Davies has revealed that talks are underway for signature of Ryan Smith to take him to Pride Park.

Smith has long been tipped to be a future star of Arsenal and has been held in a very high regard amongst the backroom staff, but it appears the player does not have what it takes to break through into the first team.

Davies told BBC Radio Derby: 'He's a very good young player who we think can bring good quality to our side.

'We're hoping to get the deal concluded in the next few days and talks are moving in the right direction. We are just trying to agree terms.'

These comments add more fuel to the fire regarding Arsene Wenger's statement saying that no transfer, in or out, were near completion. Could it be that the Arsenal gaffer is holding his cards very very close to his chest this season?

just another young english player wengers let go...
sammylash
I am just waiting for all the comments asking why Ryan Smith hasn't been given a chance. One thing I'd like to ask all the people who think this is; If Ryan Smith is so good and you think that Wenger should be giving him a chance, why is the only club coming in for him Derby County?
Rocky7
Right on Rocky7. Somebody name a youngster Wenger has let go who has subsequently made us regret it.
Little Dutch
It's all very sad because I thought that Smith could make, but the sheer fact that not one Prem club has come in for him is testament to the fact that he is not good enough for title contenders.
Rocky7
Have to say I'm disappointed. Not just because he's English. I'm disappointed when every highly rated youngster from our academy doesn't make it. But those are the odds. After his injury, he hasn't seemed quite as aggressive. Really a shame. Both he and Ali were so close to the first team only to have injuries hit them. Well, best of luck to Ryan. For certain I think Wenger felt burned by the events of last summer with Baptista and Robinho and has reverted back to his cryptic Mona Lisa ways in the transfer market.

Little dutch, wenger may not regret letting pennant go, but nobody can say he hasnt made it signing for liverpool, who are at present a lot better than us.
Ashburton Gooner
i`d like to see him as a top player there
kenyanrudeboy
Liverpool have only signed Pennant because he is like a poor man's David Beckham. He doesn't do much, but he's got a hell of a cross and with thir 'hoof it up to Crouch' style of play, they need someone to get it in from wide. I genuinely hope JP goes on to have a prosperous career, he's made some bad choices but I feel sorry for him as he's had quite a turbulent life as a whole. But somehow I don't think Liverpool will work for him, we'll see in time.
Little Dutch
AG - He hasn't made it - yet. Signing for a big club doesnt automatcially mean youve made it, just ask Francis Jeffers or Igor Stepanovs.......where are they now??
Rocky7
Rocky7, fair point but none of those players got signed by a club as big as arsenal went backwards to places like birmingham & then moved back up to the top level with liverpool. He has proven himself in the premiership which is why liverpool signed him. Pennant continually got the man of the match award last season for birmingham.
Ashburton Gooner
But he still hasn't done anything to impress. Certainly at Arsenal he rarely figured, which for me show how shrwed Arsene Wenger actually is, because even though he featured heavily for Brum, his flashes of brilliance were sporadic to say the least. Birmingham have pulled of superb piece of business.

little dutch:might not be the best example as im not sure of the details but zlatan ibrahimovic springs to mind
sammylash
listen i know u guys seem downhearted to lose a english player. But the fact is it can only be a good thing that arsenal are still producing top english talent. they may not make it at arsenal but they will elsewhere providing they keep up their hard work and dtermination like they did when they were with us. pennant didn't make it at arsenal due to his behaviour off the field, but has worked hard and now plays in a very dangerous liverpool team. steven sidwell was instrumental in getting reading promoted. jerome thomas is probably one of charltons best players, another arsenal product. so we can't be doing that bad for english football.
protocal
oh yeah i forgot about matthew upson, good player but very, very injury prone.
protocal
'e flunked 'is french exams. no room for 'im in arsene's foreign legion.
greatwhitenorf
The truth about Pennant as protocal pointed out is that he has attitude problems. He is a fine player, he was brilliant last season and Arsenal developed him as a player, the only problem is that he has a propensity for self destruction. His off the pitch issues are too great to ignore. Liverpool are going to have a helluva lot of trouble this season with Bellamy and Pennant on their team. I don't think they are better than us at all.
Keplaz
Ibrahimovic was spotted by AW when he was 16, Wenger wanted to bring him in for a trial, but Ibrahimovic said, and I quote, "Ibrahimovic doesn't do trials." Wenger also tried to sign Ronaldinho when he was 17, but passport regulations prevented him.
Little Dutch
Imbrahimovic actually was ready to sign for Arsenal, to the extent there was a picture of him in the paper holding an Arsenal shirt with his name on....once again we were foiled by red tape bull s*it
Rocky7
Maybe the players cant gel into the team, cos everybody is foreign ? so even if they are good enough, they cant communicate with them
Boony
Hopefully Ryan Smith will agree terms with us, because he is a very good player from what I've seen of him either in the cup or in the Championship whilst playing for Leicester. Any news on Lupoli coming to Derby on a season loan? DCFC
Srg
I think the Bournemouth manager had an eye on him for a bit but the season loan never came through.
