After all our hard work in letting the Arsenal staff know that Vital Arsenal wanted Kolo Toure as the next in line to Thierry Henry's captancy, they have completely ignored the voice of the most influential Arsenal site on the net *cough cough* and named Gilberto as vice captain.
Only a few months ago we ran a poll asking Vital Arsenal readers to give their choice of who they thought should be Henry's understudy and Kolo Toure came out the resounding winner.
Toure has become a firm favorite amongst the Gooners and his passion, work rate, loyalty and fair play have done nothing to damage the way the Highbury faithful feel about him, but that said I firmly believe Bert has the ability to captain the side just as well.
Infact it should come as no suprise that Henry has revealed that the Brazilian centre mid gain this honour as he has played the role as captain many times before, infact he donned the Arsenal arm band long before Mr Henry did.
In his weekly column in the Sun, Henry was in the process of praising the Arsenal 'Three Kings' when the announcment came.
Henry believes you need more than one leader to have a successful team, and with the deparute of Dennis Bergkamp, Sol Campbell and Ashley Cole, three others will now step into that role.
Henry said, 'Some incredibly influential players have left, I`m certain three more Arsenal players will now make an even greater contribution to the team this season.'
'I`m talking about Jens Lehmann, Kolo Toure and Gilberto. They will become our new leaders.'
'They`re no longer the new guys at this club and there is no doubt those three will help this team build on what we delivered last season — starting with Aston Villa next Saturday. Jens is so vocal. I`ll admit this but not all players like it as he shouts and has a go.'
'He had a great year last year and was brilliant in the World Cup. He`s an amazing player to have in the team.'
'I can reveal Gilberto will be my vice-captain and, while he`s hardly a screamer, he calms the team down. He`s Brazilian. He`s chilled.'
'Kolo is more vocal and, like the other two, forms the backbone of the current Arsenal side.'
'So those three have a big role — it can`t just be me as leader.'
So with that, I'd just like to wish Gilberto the best of luck in his new role and here's to another successful season in N5.
