Adebayor Offers Plan B

I'm yet to meet a Gooner with something positive to say about January signing Emmanuel Adebayor, but the player himself is adamant he will prove his critics wrong.

Adebayor has had a number of comparisons flung his way, the most common of which would be to that of former Arsenal striker Nwankwo Kanu. Whilst the pair appear similar in stature and a dodgy hair cut or two, I believe thats where the similarities end.

Kanu was a player of obvious skill, yet his potential was unfulfilled and his work rate occasionally questionable, and while he was a firm favorite with the fans he was never going to be a world beater. Adebayor on the other hand offers something not usually associated with the Gunners; the natural gift to score a scruffy goal and the ability to get off the ground.

Under Arsene Wenger's tenure, the Gunners rarely lift the ball to head height from a crossing position and on the occasions that happens, it's usually Henry doing the crossing to an empty box, but in this new breed of Arsenal striker, we just might have someone to mop up the scraps.

Wenger's search for a fox in the box seemed to end with the waste of 10 million quid on Francis Jeffers but nevertheless it was an ingredient missing from the Arsenal mix, but the way Adebayor opened his Arsenal account suggested he would be the player to fill that role.

As the ball popped up from a Birmingham defender, Adebayor was on hand to put the ball in the back of the net from a yard out.......with his head of all things.

Arsenal miss out on so many goals because we don't get enough bodies into the box on the break, but along with his Bambi like control and the ariel threat, Adebayor possess pace and the ability to get into the area at lightening speed, it is these things that will see him bag at least 15 goals this coming season.

Speaking with official website, Arsenal.com, Manu confirms my opinions with a self belief that will stand him in good stead.

"I think what I can bring is a little bit of running and a little bit in the air," said the World Cup star. "They don`t have big forwards like me who can jump high and are not so bad in the air.

"I think that`s only what I can bring different because, technically, I think Thierry is very good and Van Persie is amazing touching the ball."

Unless Wenger see's fit to spend big in the coming 2-3 weeks, Arsenal's main attack will be comprised of Henry, van Persie & Adebayor, 3 completely different pieces to a very exciting jigsaw.

I have a very positive view on Adebayor. Last year he scored a low amount of goals per chance but we have to look at the fact that he was in the position to score.
Clancy
a newer version of kanu only with speed. needs probably at least 3 chances to convert 1 to goal

i think he is very good prospect, still only 22 and has time on his hands, could be a very good player in the future
Arsenal_4_Life
I like adebayor - gets the scrappy goals, has good strength, good pace, bit ungainly and as previously mentioned needs a few chances to convert to one goal, or rather has a penchant for missing athe odd sitter or three... but he gives us that new dimension we had been missing, the guy to unsettle defences and do the ugly things up front - we can't always look to score the perfect goal. »»Arsene Knows««

I fear he has had his image tainted by that fateful match against Portsmouth. Would everyone still be talking about him in this way had he not missed those two easy chances???
Rocky7
I think it says a lot that he seems to understand exactly what he brings to the front line and that he compliments rather than slags RVP.

1- players that talk alot dont do *****. 2- if you cant hold on to the ball you should pass 3- if you know your stringth then use it . in my opinion he is good but not yet experienced but will get BETTER, un fair to compare him to a player like kanu to much presure, must gain the trust of the team mates so he can get balls from them missing EASY goals dont help that cause
soma
i dont think he will shine this season but surely next season will be his season he is 22 and by the time he get 24 i think he can try his luck over the golden boot:D

Crud player.....................what are you going to do? Those misses last season are going to play on his mind he needs a good season to help him forget but Arsenal as a whole will not have a good season..............lol

This guy has been a revelation for us in my eyes. As you've said he gets those scruffy goals and follows up rebounds. But as well as that he occupies defenders which gives TH space. Like TH's second goal against Villa in April, the ball came up high and two Villa defenders immediately rushed to Ade, so that TH had time to curl one in the top corner. He gets slated for his finishing, but he immediately contributed with goals last season, some would do well to remember what TH's finishing was like initially. I also like the way he closes defenders down, that equaliser v the cheating Spuds would never have happened were it not for his determination.

I also think this argument is indicative of just how unintelligent the average footie fan has become. Blanket media coverage and nike adverts have convinced everyone that you either need to do a million stepovers per game, or have your teams name tattooed onto your testicles and froth at the mouth to be a good player. See widespread condemnation for Gilberto, Hargreaves etc, while really poor players like Carlos take plaudits.

I agree little dutch. The thing I'm most impressed with when it comes to Adebayor is his attitude. He came out and spoke against the unsettling effect that JAR is having on the team and he also knows his strengths. He will be a great foil for TH who he seems to get on very well with (not like JAR).Also, If I remember correctly he came out and gave an interview straight after the Pompey match and highlighted the fact that at least he was in the position to get on the end of them chances. I've a feeling Wenger may use him quite a bit this season. We need more player like him. I wasn't best chuffed with TH14 jumping to Cashleys defence. Adebayor at least knows who's paying his wages!!

"Sidyid wrote : Arsenal as a whole will not have a good season" .. and having lost Bergkamp, Pires, Campbell, Cole and Reyes, having sent our most promising youngsters (Bendtner, Lupoli, Muamba, Larsson, Gilbert) on loan, and having a very thin, very young first team squad, they will still finish above Spurs... Come speak here again in May :)
Englishman-in-NY
I like dadyboy he'll be a threat in the air "ala, alan smith" and is willing to run himself into the ground for his team, also he words to JAR in the press recently was reassuring. you can see he is a player tha trys to lift team spirit

How can he be criticised he has not yet been given a full oppotunity ... u can throw a striker on and say there u must play well ! changing strikers every week does not help thierry nor the striker being brought in ... there is not enough time there to be able to make any real bond
Achilles
i fully understand wat ur saying, but the thing is rotation will become a neccessity as strikers in our club should be able to play with anyone of their partners. adebayor is good as he can pretty much play with any striker as to v.persie. he is also good because he seems unpredictable at times plus has a great turn of pace too. he will become a key player this season as i reckon that thierry will not play a lot of games this season as he has been doing for the past few years. we will rest him in some games for him to be fresh for duration of his four yr contract. if we play too much he could lose his best attribute which is speed, as you do wen u get older. the team won't be reliant on jus titi but the other players as well. plus we have excellent youth coming through who are certain to be future legends at the gunners. adebayor to be a success, same as the rest of the squad this season. people don't reckon we can finish top but there in for a suprise this season.
