'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Man City v Arsenal: The Fans View

After another horrendous away up North I've decided to publish what the average Gooner thinks of our first loss of the season.

I think my last article titled 'For The Love Of God........SHOOT' gives a clear indication of what my thoughts were about the game, but lets see what the rest of our Vital Gooners have to say on the matter.

Super_Gooner seemed to agree with my sentiments but was also a little upset with Wenger's substitutions.

Let me be the first to say how awful Thierry was. Unfit maybe, but he was disgraceful. Thought Wenger was wrong to take off rosicky, thought he was brilliant. Toure and Djourou played well but were let down by eboue and especially hoyte. Hleb annoys me sooooooooooo much because he never shoots. To all Arsenal players, one word of advice: SHOOT!

nono predicts a bleak future ahead unles things change drastically.

I think that the problem that we've got is that almost all teams know that we would like to walk the ball into the net, but honestly does anyone play to let us do that. The issue here is that in as much as we want to play beautiful football we have got to take chances when ever they arise. I am afraid to say if we continue to play like that we are not going to play in champions league soon.surely the players have to change their mentality. I believe that wenger's continual use of hoyte on the left back posistion is unjustified considering that flamini was a better player in that postion last year. Surely wenger has to buy in order to strengthen the team as we seem to lack replacements/competition for positions and we are weak defensively.

Pankajs_21 keeps it plain and simple.

We didn't deserve to lose but we didn't deserve to win either

As usual The Prof has the calm, relaxed and more rational view we should all take note of.

I was at the match and it was fascinating for the wrong reasons, Arsenal's problem isn't anything serious, because they are a passing team, they will never resort to short term hit or miss tactics, but in order for their passing game to work, every player needs to be bang on form and understand and be allowed to play their role.

All we need is a physical player to mix it up with our skillful players, someone who can randomise our predictable pace. We lost but if we had taken our numerous chances then it would have been a comfortable win, which means that even on a bad day, the Wenger school of football can still produce clear goal scoring opportunities.

The players are reluctant to shoot because they are footballers who leave nothing to chance, Arsenal is not a hit and hope side, and this team is still trying to find it's form, in other words, shooting randomly and getting a deflected or one off goal will make us happy short term, but in the long term this will solve nothing because you can't maintain or advance with hit and hope, Arsenal are doing the groundwork first, once that has all clicked then they will start to shoot more.

This current Arsenal side do not bomb forward like they used to a few years back, I think this is beacuse they know that they don't have a huge physical presence in midfield who can help them out in both attack and defence, every player feels like they are having to do the jobs outside or their proper roles, and this makes the whole side uneasy. For example, Pires never tackled any player ever, ( apart from that Juventus game ) but when we had Vieira alongside Edu/Gilberto he really didn't have to, he knew his only role was to create space and support Henry. Hleb and Rosicky don't have that luxury.

Our team has all the right abilities we just have one missing ingredients, we need a physical midfielder to balance us and give the rest of the players their freedom back which will in turn make our attacks more intense and less predictable. I don't care if all teams put ten men behind the ball, the pace and accuracy with which Arsenal can pass and move is faster than any defender can deal with, our problem is that we lack that elusive intimidating midfielder to give us our movement and confident ballsy football back.

mascherano????

the prof is spot on. Arsenal are never goin to be a percentages sort of team. but we have simple problems that need to be sorted out, most notably left back and central midfield. I think Gilberto and Cesc did have a very good game so I dont blame them. they broke down Man city and created plenty for our attacking players considering we were the away team. But we do need another option in there, beyond Diaby. Djourou and Toure were fantastic but the full backs let them down. Eboue does have off days, and hoyte is not good enough.
gazzap
The answer was on your doorstep Andy Johnson at £8m Everton have the bargain of the season.
alphieblues
Give up! Tomas Rosicky for 6 million or Andy Johnson for 8? Which is the better buy?
Rocky7
I have faith in our team. We haven't had the best of starts but I can see success on the horizon. There are enough ingredients in the team to ensure a successful season. I think Gilberto has the physical stature and the combative nature we seem to be lacking, what we truly need is a World Class Centre Back alongside Toure, someone who won't be exposed when we launch our counterattacks. I'm not convinced Djorou and Justin Hoyte deserve to wear the Gunner's shirt. If we can get a classy Centre Back and return Flamini to leftback, we can rule the Premiership. We also need to play Theo Walcott. Not because of all the hype surrounding the kid but because in the two matches I've seen him play in, he has brought something different to the squad. It's not pace because we have that in abundance nor is it flair, Walcott is one of the mpst direct players on the pitch. He is not looking for the perfect goal, he wants the ball in the back of the net, he gets the ball, he only thinks of getting a goal. And we need that sort of mentality now more than ever as evidenced by the City match. I believe we can go all the way this season, really and truly. Arsene Wenger, we have always supported you and believed in what you could do, show us now that Arsene truly knows.

Agree totally with the Prof, we need to up the pace of our passing. I think Diaby will make a big difference to us away from home. I think Gilberto is one of our better players (and one of our best performances yet again on saturday), but Cesc is the creative hub of our team and I wonder if Diaby will become first choice soon enough to augment our style of play. I would also welcome the signing of Reo Coker for some competition in midfield.
Little Dutch
Hey Rocky I didn't see Rosicky SHOOTING OR SCORING a goal on Saturday.
alphieblues
keplaz. if Djourou is not worthy of wearing the shirt, give me one example of where he has messed up since he has been playing for Arsenal. I can name more Toure mistakes than Djourou mistakes so get off his back and stop knee-jerking.
gazzap
agree with the prof.rosicky could change thing as for the shooting thing,we saw that him and r.v.p could shoot at the world cup, and van persie is the only arsenal player who ever really shoots on site, with mixed sucsess.ther is no problem here, we were shooting from everywhere agaist zagreb (1st leg) adebayor went close 4rom 30 yards if u remember,we just need to play like that again, weaker oposition maybe, but the basic gameplan was there
sammylash
Pascal Cygan scored 2 goals against Everton last season, so he must be better than Andy Johnson then!!! Also, consider the fact that that was Rosicky's first ever premiership game. That said, I was still pretty happy AJ scored ;)
Rocky7
Henry looked way off the mark. Give it 4 weeks and he'll be banging them in again. Don't be too depressed gooners. We still play the best ball by a country mile. Mascherano story is gathering pace daily. Himself and Gallas and we'd have a great squad for this season.
d11gunner
yea mascherano and experienced centre back would make our team unstoppable. possibly a wing foward if reyes leaves and it is us for the premiership all the way...
protocal
Apart from Henry, no one else at Arsenal should have fitness issues. And if Henry being short means "we" are not ready, then I'm worried.
Going by yesterday's game, even that whole physical thing was not a problem, because I didn't see anyone "outmuscle" us. We moved the ball well, we created chances. Yet we lost to a solitary goal. It's sooo deja vu. How many games did we lose 1-0 last season? Five, six? I'm not ruling us off, but this had better stop!!!
And what do I think needs to be done? Honestly, I could say more signings, which I also want, but what was wrong with the team on the pitch? Were they tired? If this was march then we could argue for resting people and what have you, but this is game two man. I really can't suggest anything I consider a useful solution as per Saturday's game, coz what we need is for RVP, Adebayor, Rosicky, even Fabregas, to find the back of the net. Even if we were to sign Torres or Tevez or whoever, we need more goals than those scored by either of them and Henry. Had our game gotten broken down in midfield, then I could argue that it's coz of that defensive midfielder, "physical" thing. But that was not the case from what I saw on TV.
I hope that we learnt our lesson last season, and that we are not going to repeat the mistakes again.
I also hope we do make those few signings. Mascherano would do me a lot of good. So would Gallas. Competiton never hurt anyone's career. And as our injured people come back (especially Lauren), our options will increase.
After the transfer window closes, and then we play Boro and Man U, then I'll see what to make of out chances/
There's cause for concern, but it can be remedied. By players uping their games (RVP, Ade, are you listneing?), by players finding their feet (Henry fitness, Rosicky settling in) and by new signings.
And here is a very feeble attempt to cheer you up:
Rumour has it that Wenger turned down a straight Reyes fro Robinho swap. My theory is that we was hoping to get baptista as part of the deal. But now that rumour has it that he's after Mascherano and Reo-Cocker, if he gets either, or indulge me, both, then he doesn't need to hold out for Baptista. So in an ideal world, by the time we wake up on the 1st of September, we'll have bought mascherano and/or Reo cocker, done a Reyes/Robinho, and done a deal with Chelsea involving Gallas for Cole plus cash. Imagine that.
Like I said, a feeble attempt to cheer us up.
Gaga
Just like to say good start boys.
topkop
nice one gaga, its true our game didnt break down in midfield however we still need to free up cesc and rosicky, hleb or... to do what they do best without worrying too much about defensive duties so even though we did control the centre of the park we are still slightly limited coz players are not being utilised according to there specific strengths. so unless we use 5 in the middle we do need a stronger physical player.
mish
bluemoon hahaha

AW doesn't know what do to. Henry is the only real match winner. The rest are off and on. If Henry is off, the result usually reflects that. Without DB, RP, Arsenal simply depended too much on the youngsters. Sometimes you get the results, sometimes you don't. But in EPL, you need to win almost all the time to win the championship. Time for Arsenal to rebuild. My prediction: may not even qualify for CL next season.
jogabonito
I think we played good footbal.Everyone played well from Henry to Rosicky to Van Persie to Fabregas to Walcott and rest of our defence members .One and only one problem that we had was we could not convert those chances into goals that should have converted into. I still believe we are just one match away from getting that magical touch that we are used to relate with Arsenal.
Anjana
i think Wenger has lost the PLOT!!!Lucky last season!! Nearly never made C/LGE. Arsenal should not be relying on other teams results. If SPURS won? NO C?LGE and NO HENRY!!!!!!!!!!!! LOST VEIRA, EDU, PIRES, CAMPBELL, PROBS COLE. IN 2 SEASONS!!! WOTS GOING ON!!!! THIS SEASON IS A SHAMBLES GET WENGER OUT BEFORE HE RUINS EVERYTHING. NO CHANCE OF TITLE. CHELSKI WON`T DROP MANY POINTS AND UTD ARE 5 CLEAR ALREADY. 4th IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH. WHY NO ZOKORA AND CARRICK!! OR WOODGATE. THE EMPIRE IS CRUMBLING AM AFRAID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
cockeril
Errr, you're not a Spurs fan by any chance are you?!?!?!
Rocky7
Eeer, Cockeril, while the empire (at least you admit that it IS an empire) is crumbling, what's going on at white hart lane? All that quid for Berbatov, Zokora and I dunno who else, and you already lost two games where your players didn't have a clue. Me thinks you have more pressing issues to address at white hart lane. And in case you never noticed, the table is compiled for 38 games. Not game number 38, no, 38 games. Every result counts.
Gaga
Jogabonito, if what we saw continues for the rest of the season, just like last season, then you're right, it's gonna be tricky. But that is IF.
Gaga
Is the poll realistic?? Where will arsenal finish??????? Can You catch UTD + Chelsea are you better than Liverpool??
cockeril
Cockeril, why don't you worry about Spurs and leave us to worry about Arsenal? And as a by the way, how's the Waffer cup coming along?
Gaga
Cockeril, why don't you worry about Spurs and leave us to worry about Arsenal?
