Arsenal Sign William Gallas

Arsene Wenger has defied Jose Mourinho and brought Chelsea defender William Gallas to Arsenal.

Gallas became a Gunner after being involved in a swap deal with Ashley Cole. The saga, probably the longest running in history, ended as both clubs finally came to an agreement after a long and painstaking negotiation.

The French international is widely reputed as Chelsea's best defender ahead of John Terry, and in fact, since Gallas has been out of the side Chelsea have looked decidedly shaky at set pieces.

Arsenal will now have a solid central pairing of Kolo Toure and William Gallas, indeed many people would think that this is the best pair of centre back for any team in England, if not Europe.

The Gunners will receive £5 Million along with Gallas from Chelsea for the services of Ashley 'Fed to the sharks' Cole.

Welcome to the Arsenal.

If that's a done deal, then it's a fantastic news indeed to our Team. AW's magic has nullified JM's wit. Welcome, Gallas!

I feel this is one of the most important transfers for a very very long time. We needed strength in depth and in Gallas we've got one of the best centre backs in the game. Toure & Gallas=sheer class.

Senasational bit of business. An aging head case of a defender overrated at 5 mill, plus another 5 mill in cash, for Cole who was initially rated at over 20 mill. That's not defiance, that's caving in. At least Gallas speaks the clubhouse language and will enjoy the team's pre-game meal of escargot and armagnac.

Well done Arsene,Gallas is one of the top defenders in the world and at 28 can play atleast 6 more years at the top level as a world class defender.

Greatwhitenorf, Of all the people on any forum in the world, surely you should be the one not talking about pre-match meals! Youve just paid 6 million for a man who's had 1 good premiership season, thats caving in, you gave Chelski frank Arnesen without a fight. Talking of our club house language, how many english players did you buy this window? Did you sign 2 frenchman? send them over for some of our prematch meal, I promise we wont tamper with it.

hes a good defender with alot of expierence. but I don't think he is worth the swap with ashley cole to be honest if it was a straight swap, but the £5 million will make a good deal.

Superb bit of business for us. Especially as Arsenal are saying that the cash involved is nearer to £10 million than £5 million! Toure and Gallas at the back, the beast giving us some steel in attack. Bring on Boro!!!

In the words of the stone roses 'this is the one.' A great signing and one I've coveted for a while. Its rich all these xenophobe Spuds chiding us about French and African players when they've signed Assou Ekotto, Mido, Malbranque, Chimbonda, Zokora and Dervitte and got rid of Carrick and Routledge!

Gallas is without doubt for me the best central defender in the premiership....however he is 29 compared to A.cole who is 25....who has his best years still ahead of him...baptista is good...reyes was always useless....just like all spanish plaers who whinge all the time

What i don't understand is how we are going to line up in midfield. Will Baps be playing rather than Gilberto? That would seem quite harsh after Bert's performances last season.

Brilliant purchase for you to have next to Toure. If only the Cole saga didn't happen then you'd have a backline of Eboue, Toure, Gallas and Cole. That would hold out many a World attack!

good move, though im not sure toure+gallas is the best defence in Europe. it is strong though, with Lauren and Senderos as back up when they recover. things are looking promising now. i waa actually a little concerned with the lack of transfer activity attributed to arsene. exactly what we needed - a physical presence on the pitch with gallas and baptista, especially after viera left.

I think Arsenal have done pretty well in this deal. One willing player is worth far more than one who wants away!
