Wenger Expresse's Euro Fury

Wenger Expresse's Euro Fury

Arsene Wenger is outraged at the result of the European footballer of the year result. Despite reports from Spanish and Italian news sources saying that one of Buffon or Cannavaro had won it, many still believed that the award had at last gone to Thierry Henry.

The Arsenal skipper led one of the youngest ever teams to reach a champions league final as well as scoring vital goals for France En route to the final against Italy. He was also the top scorer in the Premiership.

When speaking in his pre-match press conference Wenger said: 'It is a mistake.'

Wenger also believes that the decision was based on the World Cup rather than the previous year of the player`s career: 'It shows that the people who vote look only at the World Cup, which when you speak about elite football, in my opinion, is the lowest level in football that you can see at the moment.

'They make their decision on that.'
Wenger added: 'If you see Italy playing against Togo or South Korea you cannot say that Cannavaro has a good game or even Thierry Henry has a good game, that he is the best player in the world - look at the players he plays against.

'To be consistent in a big championship like in England or in the Champions League for me would be much more appropriate than three weeks in the World Cup.'

i been saying this all week, alas what can we do, italy won the world cup and so their players get reward for it. henry did have a great season last year with the CL final, but that gets overlooked. why didn't any of the barce players win anything ? afterall they were top euro team.

Its a disgrace, but it was going to happen, because people are blind to club tournaments as they think Internationals make players great which is not true! To be honest, if I was making the list I would have made it 1. Henry 2. Eto'o 3. Kaka Because these players did well for their clubs in the Champions League, and had big impacts domestically. I don't know why, but it seems that the World has gone crazy!

so it makes a mockery of the judging system, so now the award means nothing.. but if its judged on internationals then henry will know what let him down, its one part of his game he has failed on in recent years.

Whilst it is admirable that Wenger should support his players I do wish people actually look at article 10 of the Ballon d'or which clearly sets out the judging criteria. It is not a disgrace. There is no mockery of the judging system. Why should the rules be changed for Henry to win it this year? Every player to win the award since 1967 has played for a team who has enjoyed a winning season. The award actually covers the season 2005-06. It almost always goes to a World Cup winner in a world cup year. Unfortunately Arsenal came 4th in the league and were runners-up in the Champions League and France came 2nd in the World Cup. This means that Henry did not playing for a winning team last year .. close is not good enough, you still don't get the cigar. For Cannavaro he captained the World Cup winning side, was probably the tournaments best defender, and Juventus won Serie A. And before everyone shouts match fix, please get the facts straight, Juventus were not stripped of their title and relegated for fixing matches. They received this punishment because it was proven that their management ATTEMPTED to do this. There was in fact no evidence they were successful and indeed some evidence shows their actions had an opposite effect. But it is not the team getting honoured it is the individual. Personally I think it is right that defenders occasionally win it. I agree with Little Dutch that Henry should have won in 2004.
