'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Henry & Wenger Hails Liverpool Fans

The 3rd round FA Cup tie between Liverpool & Arsenal saw a campaign that has been going on for the best part of 18 years take a new stance.

Liverpool fans defied club officials and held up cards that spelled out 'The Truth' and sang 'Justice for the 96' for the first 6 minutes of the game.

Scousers have been campaigning for years for the truth to be heard after the Hillsbrough disaster saw The Sun printing outrageous lies with regards to the behavior of Liverpool supporters towards the dead and the dying on the pitch on that tragic day.

The Liverpools fans stood, held up the cards and sang for the full 6 minutes, even though the club had issued a statement allowing them to stage their protest before the game but not during.
I don't think even the most jobsworth of stewards would have denied the fans the opportunity to speak out on this subject.

After Arsenal had knocked the holders out of the competition, the Arsenal manager and club captain, rightly, praised the Liverpool fans for their support.

Wenger said: 'You can only admire the Liverpool fans. They kicked every ball for the team for the whole 90 minutes and were just fabulous. The club has a great support here.'

And Thierry Henry echoed his gaffer's sentiments. 'I have such respect for this ground and these supporters. What a place this is to play football.'

We here at Vital Arsenal would like to wish the Liverpool fans all the best in their campaign for 'The Truth'

Absolutely, I said yesterday that the atmos died down after the first 15 but on reflection that was not really fair. I guess I was so involved in the atmos at our end it passes you by a bit. This article reminds me, I actually took a pic of the Hillsbrough memorial before the game but forgot to add it to the previous article, I'll dig it out tonight, but certainly my whole hearted support to this campaign.

yes i answered on a liverpool post, The Truth, which is worth looking up on liverpools site. I support the campaign and hope the guy at five live gets the sack, his comments are outrageous and he shouldn't be seen to be given a job, Ron Atkinson make bad comments once and hasn't commentated on a game since, this is worse and it should be addressed by the BBC.

Thanks to the Arsenal fans for their support. With some of the hatred that goes around football sometimes its a nice change to see a little bit of mutual respect between two sets of supporters. The truth. 96 Y.N.W.A.

Somethings are just more imortant than football. Good luck scousers!

TH said "what a place to play football", referring to the atmosphere. I read a report by a liverpool fan this morning that said that was the best atmosphere they have had for ages and that recently Anfield has been more like a morgue. I guess when Arsenal come to town it always a big match. if Thierry played for Liverpool or whoever else, he would soon realise that every club has games where you could hear a pin drop, like we get at Emirates.

I will neve forget the Kop when when we won the league at Anfield in 1989. They stayed and clapped our team as we did a lap of honour. They have got a great support up there.

That comment is quite true gazzap, but the relentless nature of the chanting 'Justice for the 96' was quite an experience. I think 'You'll Never Walk Alone' gives them a bit of a rep and it is spine tingling to experience first hand. Arsenal really NEED an anthem of that magnitude. Anyway, they deserve this rep more than Newcastle, who are incredibly quiet. I managed to watch a recording of the game back last night and I could hear the 'We're On Our Way' came over very clearly. Unfortunately, 'Car Keys to Pennant' did not.
Little Dutch
Yeah, its also worth mentioning that the Liverpool fans sitting opposite the tunnel stayed and applauded our team off. As did the Man Utd fans believe it or not when we won the league there!

I wasn't knocking liverpool fans by the way. I think they are the best set of fans in the country, after us! they know their football and there is respect between our clubs. they do have a great support, but as I say they have quiet days like every club in history.
gazzap
Very much so, it winds me up when we get such flack for poor atmosphere, yet nowhere in the Prem, Pompey apart, is any different.

great words from two of the biggest names in the game today..very open and honest of them..

Liverpool are a proper club, like us. there's a lot of respect toward the 'pool from me. This is an oft-forgotten fact, but it was brought u at the weekend that apparently sky want to change the manyoo chelsea game to the end of the season to make it a title decider, along the same lines as anfield '89. But the 'pool-arse fixture was originally scheduled to be played earlier in the season, but the tragedy of hillsborough meant the 2 week suspension to the season, which meant it was re-arranged. Still, if sky get their way,it would be nothign more than a plastic culminationto the season, and a fabricated abomination. What happened between liverpool and arsenal that night was special, and was brought about by tragic circumstances. Not the behest of some corporation looking to inflluence history so they have an interesting story to tell. »»Arsene Knows««

Well what can I say? 6-2! But once again, full credit to Liverpool and all their fans. Still singing in the 90th minute when your 6-3 down is out of this world. I wish some Gooners could learn a thing or 2 from you lot. 10/10!
