Gilberto Seeks Contract Extension

The Arsenal 'invisible wall' may have found himself out of the Arsenal starting 11, yet the big Brazilian still wants to stay at Ashburton Grove.

Things have looked ropey for Gilberto since Wenger gave the captains armband to William Gallas despite Bert deputising for the most of last season when Thierry Henry was on the sidelines, and with the scintillating form of Mathieu Flamini he has more than struggled to get some first team action.

Luckily for us however, this has not affected the player's desire to stay at the club as he seeks to extend his contract.

'After this year I have one more year left on my contract and we will see if I can sort it out, like we did the last time my contract was down to its last 12 months,' Gilberto told the Daily Star.

'I have always said I want to stay at the club.'

Gilberto is one of the more likable characters at Arsenal, which makes you feel Arsene has been a little harsh with the central midfielder, but in all honesty, Flamini deserves his chance and I'm sure Bert is professional enough to fight for his place.

The press are constantly trying to undermine the good feeling at the club. Treat it with the contempt it deserves and belt out this little number to 'Salt and Pepper's tune..... Let's talk about Cesc baby, let's talk about Diaby, Let's talk about Theo Walcott, Gilberto and Van Persie, let's talk about Cesc. li'l baby, li'l baby, let's talk about Cesc.

is that a song from the stands? its awesome!

Shoot, if he's willing to stay on past this year, I've got no problem with it. Still, it's gonna be harder for him to start with Flamini doing so well, and Diarra waiting in the wings.

The more I listen to Gilberto, the more I respect this man's dedication, professionalism and his class. I really hope Wenger extends his contract. There was an interview with him on ATVO which was very interesting. Gilberto says he does not rule out playing at CB 3-4 years later, but he is comfortable playing at CM now. He also says he turned down the captaincy 2nd choice after Gallas, which is why we are seeing Kolo with the captains arm band even when Gilberto takes the field. I think he was a little disappointed with that, though he does not show it AT ALL.

I hope he stays for 2 more years as he needs to pass on his experience to the team, plus his versatility is helpful to the team at the moment.

please stay till u retire, Gilberto. he is like a father figure in the squad now, and is my hero (one of the legendary 49ers)

He should definately stay and cement his place in the history books, it would be a damn shame to sell him off when he could retire as a legend.

Bert still has tons to offer, if Ljungberg can manage to stay on for so long, Gilberto will have no problems.

I agree. A class player and an incredible person. Calm, assured, proffessional, modest and more. A great asset for the club even iff he isnt playing.

It's excellent news. He knows that he will not get as much playing time as he's used to as age creeps up on him, but he'll achieve more at Arsenal than at any other club willing to sign players above 30 (like Bolton). And with that humble attitude, he can work wonders in the dressing room.

Gilberto deserves a new contract he stood by the club when others questioned the ambition and buying policy. He is polite and respectful on and off the pitch and he still has another few years of top flight football left in him. When we hit a rough patch this season it'll be Gilberto who the young players will rely on.

It would be nice for gilberto to stay on with the club after he retires in maybe a coaching role or as an ambassador.

I hope this guy stays he has been a very good player and person and I hope that AW extends his contract.. A true legend and hope he retires as a gooner

Class player, class person, hope he stays long enough to get a testimonial, which he richly deserves.....I remember years ago on Teamtalk (crappist forum on the net....) everyone slagged him of saying he was useless.......it wasn't until he got laid up for some time that these idiots actualy realised just how important his role was......
KaoTeK
gilberto is a silent achiever, we need his calmness and experience in the team for the long season ahead. especially in late stages of the CL.

Seems like Arsene always knows when to echo our thoughts: http://www.arsenal.com/article.asp?thisNav=News&article=482274&lid=NewsHeadline&Title=Wenger+-+%27Fantastic%27+Gilberto+will+fight+for+place
