You may well have heard of Tresor Mputu, the 20 year old Congolese striker who it was rumoured Arsenal were interested in.
He has subsequently come to spend time with Arsenal, on a trial, reported to be for a ten-day duration.
It appears that he's done himself no harm during his trial spell either, for earlier on today, Arsene Wenger spoke to Arsenal.com and expressed his positive thoughts about the way Mputu has conducted himself so far during his time with the club.
He is on trial and I have to go down to test him today.
He is a creative player and wants a chance in Europe. He has impressed so far.
The Gunners official website gives some details about Mputu's scoring exploits so far for his current club, TP Mazembe, in Africa's equivalent of the Champions League.
In his first four games in the competition, Mputu hit the net nine times, including two hat-tricks. Meaning that in the other two games, he got only three goals, which is, quite frankly, a pathetic return. Send him packing, Wenger.
I jest, of course.
Mputu's also tucked away five goals in ten outings for DR Congo, so it would certainly seem he knows where the net is.
Of course, there's no guarantee that Arsene, even if he is impressed with Mputu, will decide to sign the lad on a permanent basis. He was reported to be impressed with Wilson Palacios, the Honduran winger, during his time on trial, but in the end recommended him to Steve Bruce, who, as a man who knows who to listen to and who's opinion to value, promptly took a look at Palacios and signed him!
However, who knows, it might be that Mputu makes the sort of impression that you don't see very often. If Arsene signs him, rest assured that he's seen something in the player that have us all rather excited.
