Does Arsene Need To Spend?

Does Arsene Need To Spend?

After watching the youngsters put in an impressive display against the tough-tackling, hard working Blackburn team on Tuesday night, it begs the question - Do we actually need to sign anyone in January?

I would be the first to say that we perhaps need a little more experience in our side but do you necessarily need that when you have the youthful enthusiasm and determination the team showed last night? The likes of Diarra, Denilson and Diaby might be having difficulty getting into the first team at the moment (who wouldn't with the likes of Fabregas and Flamini playing so well) but if we can keep them at the club, and more importantly happy, then our central midfield is looking in great shape. That's not forgetting Gilberto is there as well, although he has not been playing as well this season and plays as if his head is elsewhere.

Up front, we've got Van Persie, already looking almost back to his best, and Adebayor, who must go down as one of the best forward partnerships in the Premiership. Ade's certainly not had his best games for the club recently but despite his dip in form he's still the top scorer in the league. Need we say anything about Van Persie? To add to the equation, we've got Nicolas Bentdner and Eduardo, who have both impressed me in the short time they have been in the first team. In my opinion, Eduardo had his best game in an Arsenal shirt last night and has got to be pressing for a starting berth soon. Bentdner is another who is improving fast and is well on his way to being as good as Ade, if not better. Let's not forget Walcott either. He was almost certain to start last night had he not turned up at the team bus looking absolutely awful. He has come on leaps and bounds since his shoulder surgery and has been a key player for us already this season. He's won us many points when coming off the bench and terrorising the tiring defenders in the Premiership this year.

The defence is the one area of the team where we could perhaps do with some strengthening. Kolo and Willy have been immense for us this term, but when Kolo goes off to the African Nations Cup, who will play alongside Gallas? Senderos, despite having a decent game last night, looks shaky for me and has a little of the Cygan about him. Djourou is another who is inexperienced but has looked far steadier than Philippe and then there's Alex Song. Now, I will be the first to admit that I've never been a great fan of Song and the Fulham game certainly didn't help that. However, in the games he has played at centre-back this season, mainly in the Carling Cup, he has done well and has shown far more stability and confidence playing there than he ever did in midfield. Could he perhaps be the one to step into Kolo's shoes when he represents the Ivory Coast early next year? It would be a shocking turnaround of events for him to take his place in the team regularly while Kolo's away but perhaps he deserves it after his recent performances.

Sure, we'd all like to see the likes of Gourcuff, Dimitrov and Modric playing for our beloved Arsenal but with the likes of Diarra, Denilson, Diaby, Randall, Gibbs, Walcott, both Hoytes, Traore, Nordveit, Song, Merida and Barazite coming through, will we actually need them? It's certainly going to be an interesting couple of weeks in January, that's for sure.

I think we need a central defender (even if its a slightly older player 28-29) just to cover for a season or two & other than that we definately need 1 more creative midfielder, in the mould of a cesc or hleb. When them two were out we struggled. Diaby could be that man but he has suffered numerous injuries & just cannot last 90 minutes. When he is on form though, he truly is a monster of a player, so it would be nice to see him get some more time before the end of january so we can all see what a run of games will do for him.

imagine Cech playing for Arsenal.. how great..

i think a decent centre back would be fine for Jan. At the end of the season though i want a winger, so when we dont have Cesc or Alex, we can play tommy in the middle for the creativity.

We need to get a good CB either in January or for next season.
21/12/2007 14:06:00
AG and ARob, the only covering CBs in that age group that wouldn't mind sitting on the bench and playing second fiddle to Toure, Djourou, Gallas, and obviously Song and Senderos come in the form and class equal or less than that of Pascal Cygan and Igors Stepanovs. That's not even decent. I'd rather keep Bert in that position then have another one of them geniuses grace the Emirates pitch. Hell, I'd even accept Justin Hoyte in that position. Then there is the emergence of Nordtveit, and possibly another youngster from the academy (Connolly, Steer, G. Hoyte) who can supplement the squad. A goalkeeper seems to be the most obvious position that needs addressing.

I dont think we need a GK now,G4L. It would completely upset the squad, and Manu is doing his job well. I do agree though that finding a centre back for a short-term period will be difficult.
21/12/2007 14:25:00
We may need a GK but thats about it. If we do buy an experienced defender, would he be prepared to sit when Kolo Toure returns? All signings should be made with the futre kept in mind. If we do buy someone, what will Djourou and Song do? No point in paying their wages for the heck of it. Gilberto can act as a CB cover in my opinion. And as far as the winger option is concerned im of the belief that we have plenty of cover for Rosicky (Diaby, eduardo, Walcott, RvP, Clichy if needed). So to answer your question, NO we dont need anybody.
21/12/2007 16:09:00
Jens will be gone in Jan I presume, and if Berto stays, we will have 4 able CBs and Hoyte as last option. Mannone signed a new contract recently which might mean he will be considered no.3. As for strikers I think Bendtner can and would do a good job if Ade was injured, and the all-knowing AW mentioned that we will see the best of Eduardo come January. Than there is Theo Walcott.
21/12/2007 16:34:00
Don't think we need a striker. In Ade and Bendtner we have physical presence and ability to lead the line and ever-improving finishing in the latter; in Eduardo and RvP we have deadly finishing, good passing to create chances and versatility to play on the wing if necessary (though not ideal I must add); in Walcott and Ade we have great pace, the former picking up skills from his winger days; in Eduardo, RvP and Ade we have experience in international competitions; in all of them we have youthful energy and great room for improvement still. What more do we need? I say the strike force and midfield are the key strengths we have. No change needed there.
21/12/2007 16:41:00
Oh, Carlos Vela's coming next season to push all these guys too. We wouldn't know where to put a striker if we were to buy one, without selling one that is of course.
