Does Arsene Need To Spend?

After watching the youngsters put in an impressive display against the tough-tackling, hard working Blackburn team on Tuesday night, it begs the question - Do we actually need to sign anyone in January?

I would be the first to say that we perhaps need a little more experience in our side but do you necessarily need that when you have the youthful enthusiasm and determination the team showed last night? The likes of Diarra, Denilson and Diaby might be having difficulty getting into the first team at the moment (who wouldn't with the likes of Fabregas and Flamini playing so well) but if we can keep them at the club, and more importantly happy, then our central midfield is looking in great shape. That's not forgetting Gilberto is there as well, although he has not been playing as well this season and plays as if his head is elsewhere.

Up front, we've got Van Persie, already looking almost back to his best, and Adebayor, who must go down as one of the best forward partnerships in the Premiership. Ade's certainly not had his best games for the club recently but despite his dip in form he's still the top scorer in the league. Need we say anything about Van Persie? To add to the equation, we've got Nicolas Bentdner and Eduardo, who have both impressed me in the short time they have been in the first team. In my opinion, Eduardo had his best game in an Arsenal shirt last night and has got to be pressing for a starting berth soon. Bentdner is another who is improving fast and is well on his way to being as good as Ade, if not better. Let's not forget Walcott either. He was almost certain to start last night had he not turned up at the team bus looking absolutely awful. He has come on leaps and bounds since his shoulder surgery and has been a key player for us already this season. He's won us many points when coming off the bench and terrorising the tiring defenders in the Premiership this year.

The defence is the one area of the team where we could perhaps do with some strengthening. Kolo and Willy have been immense for us this term, but when Kolo goes off to the African Nations Cup, who will play alongside Gallas? Senderos, despite having a decent game last night, looks shaky for me and has a little of the Cygan about him. Djourou is another who is inexperienced but has looked far steadier than Philippe and then there's Alex Song. Now, I will be the first to admit that I've never been a great fan of Song and the Fulham game certainly didn't help that. However, in the games he has played at centre-back this season, mainly in the Carling Cup, he has done well and has shown far more stability and confidence playing there than he ever did in midfield. Could he perhaps be the one to step into Kolo's shoes when he represents the Ivory Coast early next year? It would be a shocking turnaround of events for him to take his place in the team regularly while Kolo's away but perhaps he deserves it after his recent performances.

Sure, we'd all like to see the likes of Gourcuff, Dimitrov and Modric playing for our beloved Arsenal but with the likes of Diarra, Denilson, Diaby, Randall, Gibbs, Walcott, both Hoytes, Traore, Nordveit, Song, Merida and Barazite coming through, will we actually need them? It's certainly going to be an interesting couple of weeks in January, that's for sure.

I think we need a central defender (even if its a slightly older player 28-29) just to cover for a season or two & other than that we definately need 1 more creative midfielder, in the mould of a cesc or hleb. When them two were out we struggled. Diaby could be that man but he has suffered numerous injuries & just cannot last 90 minutes. When he is on form though, he truly is a monster of a player, so it would be nice to see him get some more time before the end of january so we can all see what a run of games will do for him.

i think a decent centre back would be fine for Jan. At the end of the season though i want a winger, so when we dont have Cesc or Alex, we can play tommy in the middle for the creativity.

We need to get a good CB either in January or for next season.

AG and ARob, the only covering CBs in that age group that wouldn't mind sitting on the bench and playing second fiddle to Toure, Djourou, Gallas, and obviously Song and Senderos come in the form and class equal or less than that of Pascal Cygan and Igors Stepanovs. That's not even decent. I'd rather keep Bert in that position then have another one of them geniuses grace the Emirates pitch. Hell, I'd even accept Justin Hoyte in that position. Then there is the emergence of Nordtveit, and possibly another youngster from the academy (Connolly, Steer, G. Hoyte) who can supplement the squad. A goalkeeper seems to be the most obvious position that needs addressing.

I dont think we need a GK now,G4L. It would completely upset the squad, and Manu is doing his job well. I do agree though that finding a centre back for a short-term period will be difficult.

We may need a GK but thats about it. If we do buy an experienced defender, would he be prepared to sit when Kolo Toure returns? All signings should be made with the futre kept in mind. If we do buy someone, what will Djourou and Song do? No point in paying their wages for the heck of it. Gilberto can act as a CB cover in my opinion. And as far as the winger option is concerned im of the belief that we have plenty of cover for Rosicky (Diaby, eduardo, Walcott, RvP, Clichy if needed). So to answer your question, NO we dont need anybody.

Jens will be gone in Jan I presume, and if Berto stays, we will have 4 able CBs and Hoyte as last option. Mannone signed a new contract recently which might mean he will be considered no.3. As for strikers I think Bendtner can and would do a good job if Ade was injured, and the all-knowing AW mentioned that we will see the best of Eduardo come January. Than there is Theo Walcott.

Don't think we need a striker. In Ade and Bendtner we have physical presence and ability to lead the line and ever-improving finishing in the latter; in Eduardo and RvP we have deadly finishing, good passing to create chances and versatility to play on the wing if necessary (though not ideal I must add); in Walcott and Ade we have great pace, the former picking up skills from his winger days; in Eduardo, RvP and Ade we have experience in international competitions; in all of them we have youthful energy and great room for improvement still. What more do we need? I say the strike force and midfield are the key strengths we have. No change needed there.

Oh, Carlos Vela's coming next season to push all these guys too. We wouldn't know where to put a striker if we were to buy one, without selling one that is of course.

Like I said, if we're going to sign someone it should b for the long term and not just because Kolo is leaving for Africa for 6 weeks or so. We are not Chelsea/Liverpool

With strikers, the reasons why we suffered without RvP were that (A) Ade needed time to adapt to be up front on his own and our midfield sometimes left him a bit isolated when we played 4-5-1; (B) Ade hadn't formed a partnership with Eduardo or Walcott yet, while Bendtner Arsene usually used as a like-for-like to replace Ade. But later we also saw the Ade/Bendtner combination did not bad at all, e.g. against Wigan at home where we grabbed 2 late goals after Bendtner came on for Theo. I guess it's a matter of finding the right combinations between 5 good players at Arsene's disposal. Again, he knows best.

Regarding defence, yes WYBI we should think long term despite the obvious need for cover during ACN. I think we could live with Song, Djourou, Senderos, Gilberto and J Hoyte (in that order, based on recent performances and experience, but I only saw a couple of Birmingham matches in which Djourou played, not as impressive as before though). When Arsene bought Sagna, he also said he's versatile enough to cover in CB so he could be an option when things get that desperate (God forbid) with injuries or suspensions. If Song won't go away with Cameroon, I think we might not buy and last for 6 weeks that way. But if he goes, I guess we need to get someone - better loan than sign someone in the short term just to keep the balance and competition in the squad as it is now. GK yes is an issue. I have more and more faith in Almunia, especially after the Chelsea game where he was truly outstanding. The only worry is that he's still not tested against the best teams in Europe and we don't know how he could keep performing at that level. On the league and cup level, I've pretty much bought into having him in goal over Mad Jens. Another reason why I hesitate on bringing in a GK is Fabianski's performances. The only thing I'd really like him to get more is experience. Hope Arsene lets him play in FA Cup as well, over Mad Jens, who btw has yet again disappointed us in the remarks he's made, which keep getting more and more nasty. He served the club well for a few years, but sorry, the time has really come for us to say thanks and bye to him.

Jens should not play for us again. The way he has dissed our club, Arsene and Almunia is unreal. The mistakes were his and suddenly Almunia isn't in his class?? e kept well when he was with us (particularly in the unbeaten run) but Im sorry ill be disappointed if he continues with us beyond the summer.

If you guys have ATVO, watch the Ade interview - he says he wants to discuss with RvP what dance they'll do if either of them scores! I'm not sure if RvP would enjoy it the way Thierry did with Ade though. But if that happens, it'd be so cool LOL

Arsene has hinted in an ATVO interview that it's unlikely to sign a defender for cover because he doesn't want to have like 6 CB's after ACN. Sounds like Djourou and Senderos are there to back up Kolo and Song, if Song's going that is. I just pray Captain Gallas stays healthy then.

WYBI for me it'd be disappointing even if he stays beyond the winter window, to be honest. And if you guys have ATVO, watch Arsene's interview where he shows even more pride and satisfaction, smiling the whole time, talking about the youngsters' win over Blackburn than the first team's over Chelsea. I stangely feel the same too, despite the real difference in importance of the two games.

Gourcuff would be a nice addition, he should work quite well with Cesc, Hleb and Rosicky as they're all more or less in the same mould, problem is he's already represented Milan for the Champs. League and can't play for us in the competition if he really does arrive.

stukazufuss- Don't read too much into it mate. There's no way arsene will be willing to shell out the reported £15million and I hope he doesn't. We don't need him. We have no place for him. If he arrives, think of how much disturbance it'll bring to the squad. Diaby, Diarra will whine even more, gilberto will surely be out. We need to keep the squad the way it is and I am of the belief the squad is fine and has enough depth to compete with almost anyone in Europe.

Definitely need experienced GK and CB cause we have been leaking in goals in most of the matches. A run of clean record will definitely have a psychology edge on our future opponents in addition to our scoring record.

i dont think we do need to spen unless there was a player that could play anywhere along the back four, centre back isnt a massive problem ... if we did get the injury we can bring eboue into the centre back position and diarra right mid, centre mid isnt a problem got diarra, diaby, denilson, gilberto all ready to step in, 4 really great players

None of you think that we need a properly world class Left Winger? I'm hoping that Rosicky is having the same first season that Hleb did last year and that next season he'll metamorphisise (sp?) into Bobby Pires.

OK, another point to move this on a level. Arsene was asked this earlier in the year, if we had (and we probably do have) £100m to spend on new players, would we buy anyone? Personally I'd love us to shell out £50m on Messi and £30m on whoever is the world's best LM at the moment, but I couldn't see anyone else in all honesty that I'd want.

We just need someone to teach some of our defenders how to defend set pieces. Senderos could be world-class if he made the right choices. Watching what opposition players are doing at set pieces (e.g. corners) instead of winning the ball is just no good. If you are his size hardly anybody should out-jump you...but what do we see when corners come in ?...senderos with feet rooted on the ground....jump boy !! the fecking ball !!!!!
