'If It's Football, It's Vital'

The lowdown on A.C. Milan

A.C. Milan is a name revered in world football. Some of my earliest football memoris revolve around Channel 4's football Italia and watching the Milan side of van Basten, Gullit, Rijkaard and Baresi (as well as the evergreen Maldini). They are, of course, currently the holders of the Champions' League title and, despite languishing in Serie A mid table obscurity, bost footballing powerhouses Kaka (recently announced European Footballer of the Year), Seedorf, Gattuso, Cafu and goal machine Filipo Inzaghi. Their current status in in keeping with their glorious history.

A.C were formed in 1899 by two British expats, hence the reason they bare the Anglicised 'Milan' as opposed to 'Milano.' A.C. have 18 recognised interbational titles, making them the most decorated club on earth. They boast seven European Cups, four Intercontinental/ World Club titles (the most recent of which arrived on Sunday in a 1-0 victory over Boca Juniors), seventeen Scudettos, Five European Super Cups (including a 1995 victory over Arsenal), two Cup Winners' Cup titles, five Coppa Italias and five Italian Super Cups. (Spurs fans will be at pains to point out that they have never won the Peace Cup). They share the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza with rivals Internazionale in the Lombardy district of Milano. A city famous for its littany of designer shops and its politically active student population. (In Milano, it is illegal for police to enter University grounds, making them a fertive breeding ground for anti-establishment activity). Milan is a club whose history is likewise littered with establishment struggles, despite being Presided over by ex Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi. In 1980, they were implicated in the Tottonero scandal whereby players indulged in a betting syndicate with referees to fix the outcome of matches. Just last year, they were deducted 15 points and kicked out of the Champions' League for their part in another referee bribing scandal. They were quickly reinstated and, perhaps predictably, went on to win the trophy. Their point deduction was lowered to eight on appeal.

A.C are instantly associated with the colours red and black, which they have worn throughout their history. It apparently represents the fiery spirit of the team (red) and their opponents fear (black). This has earned them the nickname 'the Rossoneri.' However, Milan's away colours of all white hold special resonance, much like Arsenal's famed yellow and navy attire, Milan have won a great many tournaments in their all white strips. Six of their nine European Final successes have occured in all white.

Milan also follow the lead of American football in the fad of retiring shirt numbers. Upon his retirement in 1997, Franco Baresi's number 6 shirt was retired in recognition of his twenty years service and Paolo Maldini- who retires in the summer- will only see his number 3 shirt worn by one of his sons should they ever don the famous black and red jersey. Like most Italian clubs, A.C. Milan are a constantly evolving entity, having had a total of 63 managers in their one hundred and eight year history. These include Giovanni Trapatoni (two spells), Cesare Maldini, Arrigo Sacchi (two spells) and current England squeeze Fabio Capello (three spells). They have also had no less than thirty two honorary presidents. Milan's record appearance holder is, unsurprisingly, Paolo Maldini, who has now surpassed 850 games for the club and is still going strong. Record goalscorer is Swede Gunnar Nordahl who managed to notch an astounding 221 goals in 268 games. Milan share a notable record with Arsenal, as in the 1991-92 season they managed to complete an entire league season without losing a single game. Though their total unbeaten run stretched a smidgen longer at 58 games (they didn't have a Fat, diving Shrek to contend with see. UEFA's coefficient rankings currently see them ranked no.1 club side in the world, despite their domestic obscurity.

Milan's fans are typically associated with the working class districts of the city and are historically the favoured side of trade unionists, whilst rivlas Inter are considered more middle class and typically affluent Milanese. Despite the working class conotations of the club, and the left wing portrayal of their infamous 'ultras', A.C. are currently the fifth highest grossing club in World Football, and the richest in Italy. The current Milan side, though chocked full of world class stars, are ageing. With mainstays Dida, Cafu, Maldini, Seedorf, Emerson, Inzaghi and Ronaldo all in their thirties. Much of Milan's mobility is owed to the lightning legs of Brazilian wonderkid Kaka, who has usurped Ronaldinho as the darling of Brazil. His pace running with the ball and comfort with both feet make him a modren day Maradona, the sort of player that any club in world football would willingly make room for (the thought of Fabregas and Kaka providing ammunition for van Persie is enough to make you salivate). But the snarling Gattuso is Milan's battery, the resident hardman, while the technical subtlety of Andrea Pirlo lubricates the wheels of the engine room. Clarence Seedorf is also an important cog, having won the Champions' League with three different clubs, his experience is crucial. While Pippo Inzaghi is the most curious of strikers, the kind of player that will tocuh the ball three times in a match and likely come away with the match ball. The question is, can Arsenal's young legs and irresitible tempo overcome wily Milan's experience and knowhow. This truly is a mouth watering match up. I for one, cannot wait.LD.

Neh still rather had Porto
EBOUE4LIFE
You lot can toss over Kaka and co as they whip your Arses!
cockeril
I'd make a similar riposte in connection with your WAFFA Cup draw cock(eril), but I couldn't name you one Nyon player.
Little Dutch
no mentioning of Seedorf? He is very important to milan.
k_chelski
I am happy with the draw. I don't like this ''Hope for a smaller club'' nonsense. What's the point in winning a competition when you play the ''easy'' teams. When we made it to the finals last time around we played some of the biggest names in Football. Plus the bigger the team is the better we peform I feel.
Gunners
Read again kev.
Little Dutch
LD, they beat Boca Juniors 4-2 not 1-0 to win the Club World Cup...anyway this should be an interesting match.
AB_Arsenal
Cockeril grow up son, we ain't exactly chopped liver ourselves you mug!
LondonGooner
Ah sorry, stopped reading when you mentioned maradona.
k_chelski
lol kevin u do come up with good replies now and then
G4L
long may it continue, such self-embarrassing of cockeril and his kind.
G4L
I do hate this suspense held from the draw untill the match. I want it tommorow.. i litteraly cant wait.
ArsenalRob
Milan were the one club I didn't want to draw. They are excellent in the CL and there style is the perfect contrast to beat us. My family is from Milan and I can honestly tell you the name 'Roseneri' and the colours black and red have nothing to do with fear. They are to do with the red (or working class) nature of the original fan base, in Italy red class is like blue collar in the US. That is why Roma wear red and Lazio wear Blue. Lazio were the original Roman pwer club.
Ozi Gooner
Milan has been playing very poorly this season. 22 points behind Inter in the table. If feel confident about this.
gunnerkid107
Charlie Nicholas says it is a 'fantastic draw' for Arsenal. Lets take down the world champions. The team I didnt want was Inter because it seems like they cant lose. Poor Pool.
gunnerkid107
did you fellow gooners know that milan lost 2-1 at home to a crap team in the cup?? correction author.. the club world cup final was drawn 1-1 at half time.. i dont see how milan won it 1-0.. i'm pretty happy.. i think this team performs better against the better teams..
go4it_adi
go4it_adi they had no starting players on that team that lost as they are resting them for the game with Inter on the weekend, so i wouldn't read too much into that lose.
AB_Arsenal
Great write up LD. Never knew so much about Milan. But I echo the words of Ozi. They were the only team I didn't want to face. But after reading a few posts here, i'm startin to feel pretty confident.
WouldYouBelieveIt?!
go4itadi, I watched that game and it was Milan's B-team: Kalac, Simic, Cafu, Serginho, Emerson (very poor), Gourcuff, Brocchi, Agbumeyang, and another couple of kids from their Prima Vera ranks. Catania was full strength and scored on two lapses by one of the kids who played at the back. A ***** poor match. There is nothing useful for Arsenal to learn from this match except that Milan's B side is poor. The kid who scored looked quite good and lively, something like Lupoli in his Arsenal days.
G4L
Don't forget we're playing Milan in 2 months. So their current form counts for nothing. They may become poorer or suddenly they their class we do not know. But atleast this time our boys will not underestimate the Milan side and we'll have good match.
WouldYouBelieveIt?!
The only trouble with making the draw now is we've got to wait so bloody long for the game. I remember fretting about the Real Madrid game for months, and this isn't going to be any easier to wait for. God I love football.
Rocky7
Yeah G4L, I have my moments. An argentinian tried to prove me that snorting cocaine heavily before matches doesn't have any effect on your performances.lol
k_chelski
I think the reaction of the Gazzeto dello Sport and the interview with the Milan representative told you everything about their view on us. I think they really fancied they could beat Man Utd last year and that they did. I don't think they're happy to play us at all - we are a real banana skin for them, all the pressure is on them, especially with their poor league form. We should just relax and play our game with no pressure. The battle between Cesc and Flam and Pirlo and Gattuso will be fascinating as they are near mirror images of each other except for age. We'll of course need to watch Kaka but their defence won't fancy facing Ade and van Persie either. I'm going to say 2-0 to us at home and 1-0 to Milan away.
Gooner_Vin
we will lose
EBOUE4LIFE
i agree with you vin,in that the milan rep,was looking a bit nervous with the thought of playing us...in fact i would go as far as to say he was bricking it,this was the team i wanted, because we were robbed in the super cup when wright scored the equalizer, only to be chalked mysteriously off for a dubious foul or offside(i cant remember the details),and we have a great record against the italians, and even though they are the champions, history dictates that the holders dont go on to defend their champions league crown, and their form is shocking at the moment.
fran merida
This AC Milan team does not worry me at all as they are on a down slide, players getting too old and having won it all will NOT have the same hunger and desire to win as the Arsenal, besides they will of course come out to play football which will be perfect for us.
Armory
Arsene is already planning on how to beat them. Hes going to Milan after the NLD to watch the Milan Derby.
gunnerkid107
Arsenal have NOTHING to fear.... You have the BEST team in Europe at the moment, so Im sure you'll take full advantage of that when the match is played.
Millwalljohn
AC Milan is actually a bit like us in midfield, in terms of their players' "preferred moves", because they really don't play true wingers. Gattuso on the right, Seedorf on the left, but they almost always cut in. Pirlo in the middle just behind, and then of course Kaka a bit more forward. The only difference is that Cesc's doesn't play as an AM like Kaka. And Hleb gives us creativity from the side. Not so different
entropy13
Thanks for the kind words, Millwalljohn. AS for you, cockeril, I and also other Gooners here, like the challenge of facing Milan. Not saying we are defintely going to beat them as they are a quality team (though honestly, they are not in such great form this season compared to previous seasons) but we are not frighten of them and looking forward to the match. Of course, you spuddies wouldn't understand seeing as you spurs never made into the CL and playing against European's best, I mean the teams like Anorthosis Famagusta and Hapoel Tel-Aviv that you face at the UEFA Cup are not exactly quality like the ones in CL. It looks like this season, your team won't be in the Champions League, maybe next year.
BMF
if u want to face a week opponent, maybe u can enter UEFA Cup competition. there are some teams that i have never heard of before. u stand a better chance winning it there. but we are in UEFA Champions League. totally different thing, tell the spuds.
fcdematthew
Just kick the hell out of Pirlo and Kaka and we would have won half of it. But that alone is a massive task. Still, it's better than facing Real who came in second in they're group, I already have the shivers when we're facing the attacking combination of Robinho, Ruud and Raul with Saviola, Robben and Snejider just behind them.
stukazufuss
fcdematthew, if I want to know about UEFA Cup, I could ask a spud but what would the spuds know about being in the Champions League? I have feeling being in their high horses, the spuds will fancy themselves beating teams left and right if (and that's a big IF) they do qualify in the CL. Only in their wet dreams they will be in the CL.
BMF
"(Spurs fans will be at pains to point out that they have never won the Peace Cup)..."tssss BWAHAA. I was dreaming of a tie like this coz i love the football that shows up even when we have a goaless draw like vs real madrid the match is still amazing to watch. i think we just have to keep up our pacy game and the italians will fall apart at about the 60-70 minute.
anonymous
Hey Cockeril you just flippin jealous coz you cannot compare the quality of your opponents to ours and you know we highly enjoy watching our beloved arsenal facing these giants so suck eggs...just think...Cesc and Kaka on the same field??? all they have to do is sit and exchange embroidery ideas and i would still be fascinated. "what did Kaka say about the backstitch??? WOW!!!
anonymous
thanks fellas.. i didnt know that was a b-team.. its such a ******** long wait till the match will be played.. cant wait for it.. i still think arsenal's young legs will outwit the experience of the milan players.. only time will tell.. what a treat it would be to have kaka and fabregas on the same pitch.. probably the two best players in their positions in the world right now..
go4it_adi
Will Kolo Toure be back for these twp fixtures?
WouldYouBelieveIt?!
*two
WouldYouBelieveIt?!
i think he will

Van Persie isnt even on the bench for this game!!!
gunnerkid107
Its a busy christmas schedule, so he has to make changes for the games. Despite it being a derby match spurs haven't been as good as either portsmouth or everton this season so he probably wants a stronger squad for those matches. I don't see why we keep playing with just the one striker, it has been ok so far but the performances have dropped since he's been doing it.
Ashburton Gooner
Van Persie hasnt played a full game since October against Sunderland. I dont understand this at all unless he picked up a knock during warmups!
gunnerkid107
Apparently he is slightly injured!! Hopefully its a not another set back as we don't want to miss him for a long period again.
Ashburton Gooner
Damn not what I wanted to hear. Hope hes better for the Pompey and Everton games.
gunnerkid107
Huh slightly injured?! What happened to RvP??? That said though, I'm confident Bendtner and Eduardo are good enough sub strikers (in that order please).
Louisa
RVP should be better for Pompey, it was a very small injury. Probs just an impact injury.
ArsenalRob
Still my question is - why do we stick with this 4-4-1-1 whenever RvP's unavailable? I honestly think Bendtner and Eduardo are good enough to start up front. And their displays at Blackburn should have earned them the chance. But I guess that also means they're tired having played 120 mins on Tue. I guess that's part of the reason then.
Louisa
probably right Louisa, i forgot that.. that game seems ages ago.
ArsenalRob
You never know what will happen with the current inconsistent performances of Milan...I will dream on a 3-1 win on aggregate for us until that day ;)
CoastarianGooner
I thought this would happen, spurs are really up for it & because everything was stacked in arsenal's favour we have been distinctly average. Just because the fans are always geared up for a derby match doesn't mean the players are. From our players point of view, we are playing a team decimated by defensive injuries & a club we haven't lost against since '99. O'Hara has been the best player on the pitch & up against the likes of Cesc that really shouldn't be happening.
Ashburton Gooner
Lets just hope Wenger can change it for the second half, otherwise we aren't going to win. Eboue has been dire, although to be fair he is just 1 of many.
Ashburton Gooner
Very true AG
CoastarianGooner
Yes Eboue's just one of the underperformers. But when Ade's so isolated, Hleb playing in midfield and not going forward enough, I hope Arsene will send on Bendtner and have Hleb back to RM at the expense of Eboue.
Louisa
ADEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!
Louisa
great assist from faby
ArsenalRob
Don't know what Arsene's done during the half time break, we've got our Arsenal back!!!! Cesc's passing, Ade's finishing, all back!!!
Louisa
and Adebayor scores.........ADEBAYOR!!!!!!
CoastarianGooner
does anyone have a link to the match, my one's just stopped working...

allen49 how about your fellow chickens there?
G4L
but that is prior to the game of course.
G4L
yea spurts came close today. Lol Bendtner's first touch and it was at the back. He jumped like a friggin frog
WouldYouBelieveIt?!
Berbatov classy? Whiney and moody is more like it....my God, he'll fit in perfectly at ManU come January! Definitely not a guy you want on your side if you're trying to rally for a point...he gave up after Keane's horrible penalty and sulked around the pitch the rest of the match. What a big baby. Nice try Spuds....O'Hara did have a nice game though....must have been his Gunner training from the past.
SUX2BU
SUX2BU who wouldn't sulk if you play for that club and got the likes of those players around you? He wasn't like this when he first came to England last year. Don't know what happened then. But who cares. He's the only player that we had to worry about and if he couldn't turn the game around, and Robbie "doesn't miss, does he? he doesn't miss does he?" Keane couldn't score a penalty (it was Almunia's great save btw, not so much of a miss, though it wasn't a great shot to be perfectly fair), nobody could. It's that hopeless.
Louisa
Oh my dear I lord I don't think he has the heart to play for the club anymore. by just looking at him on the TV one could easily come to know he's given up. I wont be surprised if he leaves.
WouldYouBelieveIt?!
Well I think us Yids gave you lot a little scare there. Looking forward to the cup games.
Real Deal
so are we real deal.. so are we.. expect similar results though..
go4it_adi
g4l.. what makes u say arsenal's champs league campaign is finished?? i think if there is a time to face milan.. this is it.. coz they are really hard to eliminate once they reach the final 4.. i think we really can get th ebetter of them over two legs.. its younger legs vs old heads.. lets see.. matches of the season without a doubt..
go4it_adi
lol Allen we told you before the game that we will win again no matter what and we did. this is the closest you will ever come to beating us. just like two seasons ago, you BOTTLED it yet again, you just don't have what it takes to beat the big teams. you had your moment vs chelsea last season which comes in decades, so keep waiting for a win over a big team for many more years now you CHOKERS :d..
luckys_10
read the post again adi G4L was quoting spud fools
nikolaijns
go4it_adi G4L was just repeating the comments of the spuddies mate lol hehehe..
luckys_10
lucky, you seem to be getting alot of your predictions right. Certainly with the Chav gave and tonight's game you were bang on! From now on i'll be optimistic everytime you predict a win for us!
WouldYouBelieveIt?!
but what a game, even if Keane would have scored that penalty. i was sure he would come back and win the game. Alex looked a little off colour today and Bert was very shaky since he came on. Arsene should give him a run to let him have his confidence back. this heavy festive period is going to take it's tall on the lads, so i hope we don't suffer with any new injuries..
luckys_10
and does anyone know why was RVP missing today?
luckys_10
hehe thanks WYBI, but the spuds game is the most easiest to predict, they will always ***** it up in the end. and i always back the team to win every game we play so lets hope the lads keep delivering the goods all the time..
luckys_10
I would like to know too what happened to RVP. I hope AW is preparing him for the next 3 games and not that he picked up an injury.
CoastarianGooner
He picked up a slight knock during warmups. This is from arsenal.com.
gunnerchef
Thanks gunnerchef
CoastarianGooner
damn hope it's nothing too serious because we need him in the next three games..
luckys_10
As much as I hate the spuds, credit where it's due and all that. They had a dodgy pen, tried to play footy and all that, but in the end they shat themselves and made themselvses look like the usual bunch of dweebs as usual! Love it!

They played footy because we didn't play that well like the way played against Chelski last week otherwise it would have been a one-way match with full of goals.

*Sniff* I smell SCUM!!! Seriously, allen49, I only said those in spud vital in retaliation for you spuddies crap and arrogance before the match. Now that you have lost once again, you are going to cry calling foul. You spuddies started in but I will finish.

I don't worry about Milan. All we got to do is play an up-tempo game in the first half. By the second half the age of their players will start to show, they'll breakdown. I think Arsenal players are alot fitter than Milan's so we got to have them jumping around with our excellent passing game. We got what it takes to win Milan. I know it
