Battle of Torres & Adebayor

Battle of Torres & Adebayor

Actim Index Player Focus - Fernando Torres & Emmanuel Adebayor

They will be sick of the sight of each other by this time next week.

Liverpool and Arsenal lock horns three times in six days with both domestic and European success at stake. And in what will be the second instalment of the trilogy, attention will turn to the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.

Most eyes at the Emirates will be fixed on two of the division's biggest hitters - Togo hotshot Emmanuel Adebayor and Rafa Benitez's Spanish goal machine Fernando Torres.

The pair are flying high at the top end of The Actim Index, the official player ratings system of the Barclays Premier League, and but for a rampant Cristiano Ronaldo, would be fighting it out for top spot as the season draws to a thrilling conclusion.

Ronaldo leads the way with 698 points but it is the battle just below him that is expected to rage on until the last kick of the 2007/08 campaign. Torres has the edge with 593 points, only eight clear of the Gunner - with Adebayor's team-mate Cesc Fabregas in fourth position overall on 523 points.

The former Atletico Madrid man, however, has been on fire since the turn of the year. He is the top-ranked player in the Premier League since January 1, earning a massive 342 points in that time, with Adebayor the third-highest ranked player of 2008 with 253.

The pair have spent almost the same amount of time on the pitch during that spell, Adebayor's 1077 minutes just seven more than his rival. But where the Liverpool man has the edge has been in front of goal.

He has scored 12 times in the Premier League from just 22 shots on target - with seven more missing the mark. Adebayor has countered with just eight league strikes, those coming from 24 shots on target and another 14 off.

But before the game is written off as the Fernando Torres show, the balance can be tipped firmly back in the Arsenal star's favour. While Torres has been unstoppable at Anfield, his stats on the road will make happier reading for the Gunners.

Torres has scored 39 points on opposition soil compared to his staggering haul on Merseyside, while Adebayor has been far less picky, scoring higher on his travels with 135 points and taking his other 118 at Emirates Stadium.

Behind the frontmen, two midfield maestros will be charged with supplying the bullets for their respective top guns. Fabregas and Liverpool rival Steven Gerrard also have little to choose between them this term.

The Spain international began the season like a train but Gerrard has evened out the scores as the campaign has progressed and is now sitting in seventh position overall, just 28 points behind the Arsenal man.

Fabregas, however, plays his opponent off the park in the passing stakes, completing a staggering 834 in the opposition half this season, with team-mate Alexander Hleb his closest rival with 671.

Gerrard is the fourth-ranked passer with 583, with 10 assists to his credit compared to an Index-leading 17 from the Spaniard.

One horse race, Torres all the way. Looking forward to his third hatrick in as many weeks. See.... Spurs lost and i'm still here, and as ignorant as ever. Love Spurs hate Goons simple really. Just don't give a ****.

Seeing you spuds fans I am starting to feel what people who suffer from herpes have to go through. Anyway, overall whilst Torres and Adebayor are similar in terms of stats Adebayor is off form a little, he is a great player but inconsistent imho Torres peforms at the level more than Adebayor. I just hope we can win all 3 games.

Tell you what we have to do. Put the"Flamalamadingdong" on to SG and cut out that pass to Torres. Torres is a better player than Ade by a long way. His first season in the premiership is fantastic, I only wish he were is an Arsenal shirt. I hope Wenger doesnt play Eboue though I think he will. I would go with Theo and scare the crap out of them with his pace. Ade, RVP. Theo.Flamalamadingdong". Cesc, Hleb, Toure, Gallas, Big Phil, Clichy and Jens. I wish and I doubt. 2 nil to the gooners.

"Love Spurs hate Goons simple really. Just don't give a ****. AggressiveSpurs" -- so says a twit who "just don't give a ****" so much that he spends so much of his time on a site devoted to the thing he hates most in the world and that he "just don't give a ****" about. What does that say about your neurotic little hate fixation? In fact, you care a GREAT deal about us, you care so much that you feel the desperate emotional need to tell us that you "just don't give a ****". Do you spend this much time on the site for the club you supposedly support?

Gunners, we don't HAVE to win all 3 games. Neither does Liverpool. We do need to win the league game more than pool if we're going to keep alive our hopes for the title, however small those hopes are. Not that I hold much hope for that anyway. But a 0-0 draw at home and a 1-1 draw at Anfield is enuf to get us thru. Same for the pool of course.

Torres is way better than Ade i'm afraid, a more natural goalscorer however much i like Ade. I can't get my head around how bad Ade's first touch is so much of the time, only occasionally getting it right - it should be the other way round. Torres would have been a great buy for us, and he's wasted at the Pool! He and Gerro on the long range are the only goal threats at the moment in a generally misfiring Pool team, so stifle them two and you've cut off their source of goals, that's the key, and is why with the flamster on board, i believe we can do it. I feel way more confident at the mo with Sendy and Gallas at CB with Toure replacing Sagna. As mentioned above, i woudl prefer to see Theo that Eboue on the wing. I feel that Theo is strating to come into his own now, cant wait to see if Vela cmes back next season, Vela and Theo on the wings may be an intersting atacking option, real pace and trickery. COme on the Gunners!!!

I know it is dangerous to think ahead but there is a great chance that the winner of this game could go on to play chelsea and, if they win, man united. Apart from the fact that this is probably a disadvantage for Arsenal, as we always seem to do better against European sides, this just is not the champions league as it sould be... Not liking this....
