Wenger furious (AUDIO)

So close and yet so far - that's what it was like for Arsenal at Anfield. The Gunners' came storming out of the traps on Merseyside and deservedly took the lead against a shell-shocked Liverpool side when Abou Diaby rounded off a move by hammering past Pepe Reina on 16 minutes.

From the keeper's perspective, he was beaten at the near post by the sheer power of the shot, but Arsenal continued their dominance for the next 15 minutes. Suddenly, out of the blue, a Liverpool corner was brilliantly headed in off the post by Sami Hyypia - the Finn scoring in his 3rd Champions League Quarter-Final for the Reds.

Arsenal seemed to lose their rhythm before Fernando Torres stuck midway through the second half. But then Theo Walcott seemed to put the Gunners' in the ascendancy. The 19 year old winger was brought on as the North London side chased and duly came up with the goods with just 6 minutes left. Picking the ball up off Steven Gerrard a few yards outside his own box he ran and ran, beating his fellow England midfielder, Javier Mascherano and Hyypia to square to the oncoming Adebayor - the Togo striker seemed to have sent them through to the semi-final as he side-footed into the net. But just a minute later, jubilation turned to despair as Ryan Babel's surging run into the box was ajudged to have been illegally halted inside the box, a decision which left Arsene Wenger furious. Steven Gerrard powered the spot kick home and any lingering worries about Wenger's men coming back again were extinguished when sub-Babel ran through in injury time to ensure the Gunners' were rueing their luck.

And so was their manager.

Its all gone Pete tong for you goons, cant see you winning the league either, but you played brilliantly a great game to watch, Anfield is a nightmare to play at when the scousers are on song, thought you played the better of the 2.

Oh ladies, those still wearing your arsenal shirts and scarves, take them off and wipe your tears .... Liverpool is the better team and the penalty decision is correct.

ivansk, Pool are not a better team than us, they couldn't beat us without a dodgy penalty borne from a blatant dive, the penalty decision last week was FAR FAR FAR more correct than last night's. I can just imagine the uproar today if we'd won last night due to a soft penalty awarded because of a blatant dive from one of our players.

BTW, your first goal should not be allowed as the player (forgotten who) appeared to have handled the ball before delivering the pass to diaby for the 1st goal. So stop whining. Liverpool was the better team.

As an arsenal fan, i think wenger really needs to zip it now and get on with the job. all this talk of the double pre-match was already doing my head when it was very very clear to all that the team has no depth or character. im sorry to say this but my biggest disappointment with the team(after paris and henry!) was in birmingham after eduardo. the old arsenal or even man u chelsea would literally hammer birmingham after that incident. but no it was more of mental fragility, this and that. i strongly feel that wenger knows that the team lack a strong underlying character which is probably why he talks about it time and time again. He MUST buy star players this summer to augument the team's capabilities. The rationale for hoarding money is no longer there, the stadium has been built, payment is structured and unless im mistaking he has banked a profit over the last financial year from sales. It kills me when he says things like oh ronaldo, yes i was tracking him, same for drogba, and even torres! stop tracking if that's all you re gonna do man! whether we like it or not, winning has a lot to do with success and unless he wants us to turn into a west-ham esque selling club then he better get the cheque book out. there rant over. ps- to those that say dont boo the team when they re playing **** how else can you let them know how you feel. equating a normal employee with football players is inaccurate. they are sportsmen and entertainers. we dont like it we let them know, end of!

Babel is a effing diver and the referee's a scouser. Hleb's was a clear penalty that was not given. The better team did not win on the night. W*nkers.

I was hoping that it was all just a bad dream, but it's not is it? F***ing gutted. Thing is, we're almost certainly gonna get nothing but misery on the weekend too. The officials have been bad enough over the last few weeks, and it's only gonna get 10 times worse at OT. What a miserable week!!!

Springy - If you have to go back four years to find something you're really clutching at straws. We've had 3 dodgy penalty decisions, and offside goal, and a goal ruled out for offside when the referee saw that the defender played it to our guy in the past 6 weeks. I think we're entitled to feel agreived.

Just saw this posted on another blog: “Gerrard said Liverpool were lucky to book a semi-final tie against Chelsea for the third time in four years. 'Arsenal are a fantastic team. They passed us off the pitch but we stayed together,' he said. 'We never lacked belief and in the end we came through. 'It was a fantastic team performance but it would be difficult to say the best team won.'"

I'm too sore to feel even a little bit lifted by Gerrards speech. I had to cheer myself up by going through all the pre-season spurs fans talk about this is their year and they will finish fourth - cheered me up no end! Sad Spuds. At least we aren't kidding ourselves that the worthless cup is a real trophy and at least we are challenging for real honours and losing with pride. We played well and were denied by poor decisions over the two legs. Nothing you can do about that.

Why do we waste time on these idiot spuds? Here is how the teams are progressing in the league: 2005-6 Arsenal 67 points, Spuds 65 2006-7 Arsenal 68 points, Spuds 60 2007-8 Arsenal 71 points, Spuds 40 with 15 points each to play for. So even with maximum points (like that would ever happen), Spuds will again have dropped 5 points from the previous season, but more likely 10-15 points less than last year. From being within two points, then 8, they will likely be 25-30 points behind us this season. The only way Spuds would be seen to be progressing is if they were playing golf.
