So close and yet so far - that's what it was like for Arsenal at Anfield. The Gunners' came storming out of the traps on Merseyside and deservedly took the lead against a shell-shocked Liverpool side when Abou Diaby rounded off a move by hammering past Pepe Reina on 16 minutes.
From the keeper's perspective, he was beaten at the near post by the sheer power of the shot, but Arsenal continued their dominance for the next 15 minutes. Suddenly, out of the blue, a Liverpool corner was brilliantly headed in off the post by Sami Hyypia - the Finn scoring in his 3rd Champions League Quarter-Final for the Reds.
Arsenal seemed to lose their rhythm before Fernando Torres stuck midway through the second half. But then Theo Walcott seemed to put the Gunners' in the ascendancy. The 19 year old winger was brought on as the North London side chased and duly came up with the goods with just 6 minutes left. Picking the ball up off Steven Gerrard a few yards outside his own box he ran and ran, beating his fellow England midfielder, Javier Mascherano and Hyypia to square to the oncoming Adebayor - the Togo striker seemed to have sent them through to the semi-final as he side-footed into the net. But just a minute later, jubilation turned to despair as Ryan Babel's surging run into the box was ajudged to have been illegally halted inside the box, a decision which left Arsene Wenger furious. Steven Gerrard powered the spot kick home and any lingering worries about Wenger's men coming back again were extinguished when sub-Babel ran through in injury time to ensure the Gunners' were rueing their luck.
And so was their manager.
