Wenger: We Must Go For Second

Arsene Wenger has admitted that the 2-1 reverse at Old Trafford last Sunday, which halted Arsenal's title charge once and for all, still wrangles. But he insisted that his team must aim to finish as high in the table as possible.

Speaking of Sunday's defeat Wenger said,
'It will never go out of my system, but we want to focus forwards and what is in front of us,'

'Now is a good opportunity for us to show mental strength and to finish as well as we can, as high as we can because second place is still possible.' Wenger told the official website.

Le Boss was keen to stress that despite a difficult two months for Arsenal, his young charges had made another step in their development in this campaign,
'Overall, I believe we have made big progress this season. We were very close to the two trophies which really matter to us and we want to go into the next season feeling we have moved forward.

'I believe we will benefit from all which we have learned this year and will come back even stronger.'

Here, here. Adversity brings steel and I can see the tumultuous end to our campaign instilling a character and togetherness in the side that will reap rich rewards next season. We are already three points up on last season's points total and the likes of Bendtner, Walcott and Senderos will have learned a great deal. People are very quick to forget that the Invincibles were built on the back of consecutive painful Cup Final defeats to Galatasaray and Liverpool. Let's hope the recent malaise serves to galvanise the Gunners.

The '71 double was forged from a young team which suffered the humiliation of a League Cup defeat against Swindon which in turn had followed an unfortunate defeat in the final of the same competition against Leeds a year earlier. History shows that your failures can breed the strength to go that step further.

I feel that Arsenal should stop talking until they win something. I remember last season all the talk was about winning the Champions league, then it was about going for second place, then it was about making sure we kept fourth place. I recently heard Ade talking about next season. Forget the talk and get on with playing football that is capable of converting the great play into wins.

ys I saw this really good joke today, thought i'd share it with you. ........................................Thieves took advantage of the "Battle of Britain” Champions League match Between Liverpool and Arsenal on Wednesday night to burgle two more footballers’ homes. The first unfortunate player was Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard. The crooks got away with countless items of football memorabilia including many of Gerrard’s own medals. Amongst the items currently being hunted by police are: 2 FA Cup winners medals, FA Youth Cup winners medal, 2 league cup winners medals, Champions league winners medal, Uefa cup winners medal, 2 super cup winners medals, 2 charity shield winners medals, They also took a number of personal awards including. player of the year, young player of the year and his much cherished MBE. The other unfortunate player to be targeted was Arsenal's Cesc Fabregas. Thieves are thought have escaped with a kettle and a toaster. Like it ................ No ............ oh well guess i'll never have friends here.

So YidEdy you think you of all people have the sense of humour to joke about going for 2nd in the league? We're not talking about the 2nd HALF of the league, mind. Are you sure you follow what we're talking about? Just like I wouldn't pretend to understand what it's like to have to scroll down the league table to see my team you know (shrug - and that's not a Gallic shrug).

Hey thanks. I thought Kolo could do a job in RB but apparently he's still not fit enough. Now it should be Eboue instead of moving any CB there cos Gallas is vital in the middle. I also think Theo could make an impact in our quest for 2nd spot as Cesc, Hleb and Ade all look awfully tired. If we beat Reading, we're 2nd already with a higher number of goals scored. If we win by a 2-goal margin or above, we'll get ahead of Chelsea with a superior goal difference. It's doable for us though the margin's incredibly thin. But we should try to bang in more goals as it might come down to goal difference now it seems. Let's just keep going as a good finish would go a long way in boosting our confidence and hopefully (am I being too hopeful again?) in attracting top players in summer too. Even improving from 4th to 3rd, albeit with a great jump in points and having been so involved in the title race, wouldn't be enough to kind of do some justice to the lads' hard work. Only a 2nd spot would be enough to mark the huge leap we've made this year.

I realized something while reading that article.. which is obvious, yet I guess, significant. We've never had the same group of players in transition from one season to another for the past 3 years. 3 years back, it was Vieira who left, then 2 years back it was Bergy, Sol Campbell and Lauren and last year Henry, Ljungberg and Pires.. which is why I feel that Wenger will desperately want to keep the same squad that he has now for next season.. but then again, we will see Lehmann and maybe, Gilberto leave. I think that if we keep the core of this group together, esp. Flam, then we'll have a good season next year.. changing the dynamics of a team every year will hurt any side.

Thanks Ivanskg, we will. With your caution, I've just checked the table again, a 5-point gap above Liverpool, phew! If you care about your team more than ours, you watch out too - Newcastle are just 2 points behind you. And that's no joke - you do watch out. See, we're so caring for each other - now this is a joke, just to be sure.

And by the way, when we sold diarra, everyone was saying "wow, sold him in 6 months for a hefty profit, great bit of business" but now, many are saying that it was a bad move.. we can be so fickle!

Nah AR4E, a lot of us were jumping up and down asking why Arsene let Diarra go while Flamini hadn't committed and Gilberto's set to leave. Which still is the case. But I still think when the player's so stubborn and didn't want to wait for his chance, he probably doesn't have what it takes to get to the top anyway. That said though, he would still have been very useful especially in a injury-hit situation like the one we're in right now.

Didnt we lose a significant lead in 2003, before winning the Premiership unbeaten the next season ? Wenger only added 1 player to that squad, and I can see him trying to do the same for next season. Experience in defence ! Finishing 2nd would be nice, but Chelsea are able to grind out results now. 3rd will not be a bad end to the season, and irrelevant to next seasons' prospects (apart from an extra CL qualifier).

The problem with that crap joke Edy is Fabregas has an FA cup winners medal. I bet Ledley King wishes he had 1 of those instead of his carling collectables medal picked up by the likes of Steve Claridge when he won it with leicester.

Well said Moorish. ANyway, i agree with the article. If there is something to play for, then we should bloody well play for it. WHatever happens, we can hold our heads up high coz this young squad is developing and coming on leaps and bounds. Breathtaking football will stay, lessons from defeat will be learnt and grinding out results and winning ugly when necessary will be added to our game as will some world class talent. These boys will become unstoppable. In the meantime, spuds are looking as though they will definitely lose Berbatov. Never mind eh, you have a £16million rated backup striker to make the difference haven't you!HAHAHA

Interesting points/quotes from AW's interview and press conference on the official site today: "next season starts now" / "this is the lowest week I've had here." Denilson is back in the squad for Reading. AW said Denilson was out for 7 weeks with a hamstring problem, which limited his ability to rotate players. The interviewer and AW discuss how at the start of the season Arsenal dominated at the end of games so that they could always come back and win the game if they were losing. In recent weeks it's been the opposite where Arsenal dominate at the start of every game, establish a lead but lose it quickly. AW talks about how this reflects physical and mental exhaustion at this stage in the season and his determination to plan better for that exhaustion next season.

Yeah, I think the "we only need one player" spiel is just a rous so as not to appear desperate in the market. I reckon we might see some good squad additions, but those expecting "superstars" (whatever the hell they are) will be disappointed. Sagna has to have been one of the more underwhelming signings of recent years, I'd certainly settle for a few more of those this summer.

I just looked at the Vital Spuds home page and there are no Vital Arsenal members blighting your site, so why don't you **** off and show us the same respect. Same goes for YidEdy and Griddo.
