Sagna Extends Arsenal Stay

One of the performers of the season in the 2007/08 campaign has penned a new contract tying him down to the Guuners till 2014.

In Bacary Sagna's first season in the Premier League, not only did he settle in well, but had the aura of a fully fledged PL veteran and was easily the best right back in the League.

Arsene Wenger's Arsenal have rewarded the Frenchman for his fine work with a contract extenstion that I presume would carry a healthy pay rise.

Out of all the positions that needed strengthening I would have said full back was the least of our worries last season, yet the dreadlocked defender turned out to be Wenger's best signing.

yeah.. the lad deserves it.. IMO wenger should move for nasri before the euros if he has to.. his price might escalate after that.... however.. wenger has a track record of not signing players the media quotes he will.. example dudu.. we were to sign palacios acc to reports.. we ended up signing him out of nowhere..

Awesome. One of Wenger's best signings ever and proof that ready made established players can be a success at Arsenal. His power is in his hair.

LOL, U4L, good point! Interesting how they're all French. Actually, Evra is in the French national team, he's part of the Euro 08 squad. Sagna wasn't chosen because he's injured. Clichy has the excellent Evra ahead of him. It's Abidal that a lot of us don't get. Anyway, what's not to love about Sagna??? Long may his blond locks reign!

What do you expect with Domenech in charge. How Abidal can get in the first team ahead of Evra & Clichy, Sagnol & Clerc ahead of Sagna & originally no place for Flamini is beyond me. No space in the strike force for Trezeguet & a call up for Malouda is equally laughable.

Trezeguet's omission does make sense because his form for the national team has been poor in the last couple of years. He really doesn't perform in the national team the way he does at Juve. And Domenech said he did not choose Sagna because he's still recovering from injury. It's the same reason he was force to omit the exellent Mexes, who was originally in the squad. Mexes got a horrible knee injury in the Copa Italia just 2 weeks ago.

Is abidal even first choice for barca? I cant remember him playing against us, and if he did it means he must have been *****!

I think Abidal is first choice for Barca. Domenech relies on Abidal based on his past performances for the national team, which were always better than his club form. But he's been in decline for the NT as well recently. I'm glad Domenech was forced to leave out Vieira, I just hope Flamini's up to it at a big tournament like this.

Hi all, dont send me packing yet, I want to ask a serious question, How big a loss is Flamini? Obviously you lost him on free, which is bad, but as a non gooner I have only seen him have 1 good season? Or is it a big blow?

Hello everyone, I'm french. Jaelle, Trezeguet has been poor lately cos the way we played was a disaster, only counter-attack to fit Henry. The press and Domenech was against Trezeguet, and s*cked Henry. The stat show that even with his poor performance, If Trezeguet had vas many gamae and time given than Henry, he would have score 15 more goals. Trezeguet has something like 33 Goals in 71 appearance with only 60% as a starter, when henry has 44 goals in 100 appareances with 85% as a starter, Trezeguet played only (in average) minutes per game against 75 for Henry. the News paper and Domenech just don't like Trezeguet, they can't say anything agaisnt "GOD" Henry because he wouldn't guive them any interview if they don't do so. Domenech even said that henry was his favourites for the "Ballon d'OR" even with the **** last season he had........ I don't know what they do together at the hotel, but i only know that Trezeguet didn't want to do it. Domenech is just stpuiod (the Henry-Trezeguet story prooves it) and prefere the OLD SH*T Thuram than MEXES, He prefers the old sagnol than Sagna, and the crap Abidal than Evra or Clichy. Now we play one of the worst football in the Europe, i would rather wath Bosnia, Montenagro or Engald play.... :)))). Seriously , in 2006 we had Zidane, he did hide the misery, but at the Euro, we will seehow Domenech and HEnry are really crap....

FloG, I'm not a fan of Domenech's and would prefer to see him go (I still can't forgive him about Pires and Giuly) but not every single decision he makes is stupid. Mexes was going to be chosen but he had a very bad knee injury at the Copa Italia. Sagna is not yet fit from his injury, he can't be relied upon at a big tournament like the Euros right now. EVRA IS IN THE SQUAD, so I don't know what you're complaining about there. I agree about Abidal and Thuram (tho he had a great game against Ecuador). I think Makelele, Thuram and Vieira should all be retired from the national team. I too wish Henry were not in the national team, but I'm just not convinced about Trezeguet. There is one important criteria that a national coach has to consider if he wants to win a trophy: he needs to find the right balance between youth and experience, that's what Lippi had with Italy in 06. That is obviously what's on Domenech's mind--unfortunately some of his choices for players make absolutely no sense. What's missing from the French NT right now is leadership--they had that with zizou.

jaelle. Evra is in the squad, but i'm not sure he's gonna play. Vieria might not be at the Euro, he called back Flamini in case, just waiting a bit to give his last decision. The leadership, the young lad like Diarra, Toulalan, Benzema , Ribery can be this leadreship in th french national team, but by the game, even if they don't speak, they'll play if they have the freedom to do so. like Zidane did in 2006......, Vieira (if if keep his place in the squad), Sagnol, Thuram, Gallas etc, it is too old, not in shape. Sagnol has been injury all year, and was nowhere against Colombia (what it is gonna be against Netherland and Robben or RVP???) Gallas and Thuram lokked really really poor, with no legs, and Abidal, then, i prefere not say anything, it is a crime agaisnt football if he is firts choice :) Seriously, have you seen the way we play???? Zidane was a leader on the pitch, he didn't speak, he played...... Benzema should have the freedom to do so.

Totally OT: I guess we can now eagerly look forward to seeing our players kicked and stamped on by Man City, now that they've hired the PL's top thug-manager.

By the way, Domenech said that Mexes was just a choice, the only one unavailable for injury was Escude. So, Domenech prefered Boumsong (please) and Thuram (Squillacci and Gallas desrve to be there) rather than Mexes.

FloG, I don't understand why you think I'm disagreeing with you. I'm only pointing out that some of Domenech's decisions make some sense: injuries forcing his hand for Sagna and Mexes. I know about the Vieira situation (I mentioned it in my earlier post), I'm glad that Domenech was forced to call in Flamini. But you still don't get my basic point: all successful national teams strike the right balanced between youth and experience. I can see that's what Domenech is trying to do but he's incapable of making the right choices. The young players like Benzema and Diarra are not yet leaders, the squad does need some experienced players. It would be madness to put out a team of all young, inexperienced players. Also, I agree that his style of play inhibits this very talented team to perform to the best of their ability.

Because i dont support France i am glad to an extent that Sagna and Clichy are not playing so they can be rested. I just do not understand the logic behind it. Anyway i hope Fabregas or Van Persie win the Euro 2008. I mean Spain or Holland

The wider context of this good news is of course if you are good enough, and with the strength of character to match, Arsenal will reward you well. This deal will make Sagna financially secure for life. Other players looking at their own prospects and position at the club would do well to see how Cesc and Bacary have been rewarded for their committment and quality. And yes, Bacary WAS the best RB during 07/08 as Clichy was best LB and both deserved there place in the fantasy PL side for the season.

u4l our team's form dipped at the end, but Clichy's didnt. he was consistent throughout the season. and while Evra was great when attacking, his defend was shaky and poor at times throughout the season. that is why Clichy was chosen ahead of him in the team of the season..

Well done Bacary- ace signing; great first season with immediate impact! BTW, Jaelle and FloG: what do you mean Henry is crap? He's only the greatest ever player to grace English football and the greatest never to be crowned FIFA World Player. He might have had a poor season by his very high standards but that's because he's playing at the wrong club. Form is temporary; class is permanent.

Best right back in the league with ease, well done to the club on signing him to a new contract. Domenech has always been an ass on player selections, now france have no real supporting striker, only a bunch of poachers with oversized egos, that suits me fine. That means he'll soon be out of the door.

People say Henry had a bad season. But even though he does not look the Henry of Arsenal in his prime he still had an ok season. He scored 19 goals and 10 assists in 41 games(12 & 8 in 30 league games). He ended the season well with 5 goals in 4 games in may. And he was mostly played out of position on the wing in his first season.
