We Missed Eduardo!

A disappointed Slaven Bilic rued the unavailability of Eduardo to the Croatian team after their late dismissal in a penalty shoot out against Turkey. Having already described the loss as a 'handicap` prior to the tournament, reflecting on yesterdays game he said I've already mentioned this but I would have liked Eduardo to be in the squad for the tournament. Sometimes we lacked bite in attack. Without him, we had problems in finishing.

The Brazilian born striker had notched up 13 goals in 22 international games for Croatia following an equally impressive 8 in 12 for the country`s under 21 side. Eduardo had contributed enormously to getting them through the qualifying rounds to the competition finals. He was the architect for the second goal which helped knock England out as Croatia triumphed 3-2 securing their qualification. Bilic had also said that the team had even felt his absence in training, as he is very popular amongst all the players. We feel it all the time because we consider him one of the best strikers in the world. he said at the time.

Eduardo`s recovery from a career threatening broken leg is ahead of schedule and it`s believed that he will recommence training at Arsenal possibly as early as late July according to some reports. With the absence of van Persie in the second half of last season the Crozillian striker had notched up 12 goals and 10 assists in 22 starts for Arsenal prior to his injury in late February. Croatia weren`t alone in regretting his loss.

Felt gutted for Croatia last night. All those chances went begging and it's like watching us in that period when we missed Edu/RvP/Rosicky. So cruel. But Edu will come back to haunt English clubs and England again this coming autumn.

Rocky I've actually been wondering if Bilic is a closet Gooner heehe, judging from the way his Croatia team plays.

To be fair to Bilic, it's much harder for them than for us to replace Eduardo so it's quite true that they had a bigger handicap than we did. We suffered when Edu's out bcos RvP was out and Ade was jaded and his goals (and also goals from our midfield) were drying up at the same time. Anyway, very well done to Croatia. I can see some English clubs coming in for Bilic already.

Certainly Croatia & yourselves missed Eduardo. How is he doing after that horrific break ? Is he back in training ?

I was willing Croatia on against the Turks. It is great news that such a talented youngster is ahead of schedule. I really feared for his career.

Kind of close. And then Spurs are like England, playing crap, not in the same league and not even in the tournament.

Lou i think that 123spurs was paying you a back handed compliment, i really dont think he was taking the p**s, more refering to playing a great brand of football but not getting any just desserts. Lighten up mate or Ms. How is Eduardo recovery going ?

Yeah I did acknowledge "it's kind of close" didn't I? I actually felt the same if you did read my first comment above. All the great football Croatia played, all the chances missed, etc. reminded me a bit of ourselves last year when we didn't have someone like Edu (or RvP) to finish them off. But I'm also honest in feeling that Spurs are like England, not there or thereabouts. Just honest. But if you saw as much as I did what 123spurs said here before, I wouldn't say he's "taking the *****", sometimes he's full of *****. And since he was talking about last year, so was I. Who knows how we or you guys will perform next season. Banter's fine, but he's boring and not remotely funny as some of the ManU/Chelsea/Spurs guys around here. Anyway, not that deserves my attention any further. Eduardo's recovering very well, thanks for asking. News from Brazil says he might come back to train as soon as July and it's possible that he'd be in or around our pre-season prep. Well that's far better than we I personally ever hoped for. We really really feared for his career. He's such a great guy and deserves to come back and score some goals.

12 goals and 10 assists in 22 starts should tell you that Eduardo wasn't a flop for us. And he cost us half what the Spuds shelled out for Bent.

Amos, actually Bent scored 6 goals for them in 11 starts and 16 sub appearances in the league. Just that they're against Boro, Wigan, Derby, Pompey, Newcastle and West Ham. :D And that he cost double lol

Right Edu wasn't first-choice, but our first-choice (RvP) was out the whole time and Edu got terribly injured just when we needed him most. I hope that's not too tough for you to understand.

thats the way it goes cant be helped injuries, there be no other player to get ahead of keano berba partnership, bent cost 10-12 mill up front an rest on appear an bonese etc, also he was top score for charlton in prem, alos look at other players who dint have best first seaon an they have exceled now, pires, henry drogba ronaldo, a player has to be given at least a seaon to settle in.

So you're backing Bent to shine next year then? Should be worth waiting for. The fact that you are paying for him on hire purchase doesn't make him any less overpriced.
Amos.

Right, give them a year and see what they're made of. I can't wait for Bent to replace Berba and outshine Torres next season.

True hard to get ahead of first-choice pair. But since Berba's off, do you think Keane-Bent will give Bent a decent chance to shine and prove he's worth 16m (or even the initial 10-12m, let's just say) next year? Or do you want Ramos to put Giovani or a new striker alongside Keane? The way you keep defending Bent makes me curiously how fully confident you are about him as a good striker and "not a flop."

If Ade were to leave, it's really tough to find a like-for-like replacement as he's pretty unique. Big guys in his size doesn't have his pace. Quick guys doesn't give us that nuisance factor he gives. Sharper-shooting guys probably don't have his physical presence (and in that "good finishers" category we've already got RvP and Edu). Strong guys who can lead the line alone probably doesn't have Ade's ability to bring others into play. So I really don't know. But Arsene certainly does.

Lou, my preference is to see Berba stay, but if he is sold then hopefully Benty will step up to the plate & do the biz, i am not confident about that, but i would like to see the boy be given a chance. If that is at the risk of not signing another striker during the transfer window, then i dont think it is one we should take & if Berba goes we should replace him accordingly with a striker of at least his qualitys. What about you guys ? Flamini gone, Hlieb & Adebayor looking increasingly likely to leave, you guys are obviously not panicking about it, but surely it must be causing a few consternations

And strikers who've got all of Ade's attributes (Torres or possibly Benzema or your Berba) are either not available, or not available at a reasonable enough price. David Villa we all know is fantastic but for that kind of mobile, tricky, clinical striker, like I said we've already got RvP and Edu, who I wouldn't want Arsene to sell. I'd personally prefer a big CF to replace Ade as we don't have someone proven in that mould, Bendtner is still a tad too inexperienced to lead the line for us. St Etienne's Bafetimbi Gomis is a bit like Ade and performed well for France at times, but his form's been patchy and unproven at the top of Europe. In any case, I'm not too worried, if Arsene decides to sell his top scorer last season for a good enough price, he must have something up his sleeves, as he always does.
