Super Cesc Steers Spanish Through

As the sole Arsenal representative left in the Euro's (if you don't count Mad Jens, who is leaving the Gunners...), Cesc fabregas scored Spain's final penalty as the Italy - Spain QF went all the way to a penalty shootout.

In what was in the first half a dull affair, and in the second more open, with the Italians focusing more on stifling the Spanish as opposed to looking for goals themselves, the nonety minues drew to a close and the match slipped into extra time.

Cesc started on the bench, coming on in the 2nd half, and demonstrated his usual calmness and vision, probing for openings where they were to be found, and keeping the passing ticking over.

Extra time came and went with no goals, and both teams faced up to the inevitable penalty shootout.

Italy blinked first, with Cassilas saving from De Rossi, before Buffon eventually pegged the Spanish back, saving from Guiza, who never looked confident.

With the very next penalty, Cassilas saved from Di Natale, and Spain were one kick away from the semis, as Cesc Fabregas walked forward to take the potentially decisive kick.

His long run up resulted in a finely taken spotkick, which beat Buffon and nestled in the back of the net, with Cesc wheeling away in delight towards the Spanish fans, arms pumping, before turning back and dashing back toward his teammates.

So, Spain go through, Italy go out in heart-breaking fashion, in a manner in which every English football fan will know all about.

Congratulations to Cesc, who from the moment he came on, looked the man most likely to pick the lock for Spain.

Well Done! Cesc does what Modric couldn't. Thats the first time I remember seeing Cesc take a PK. Can anyone else think of Cesc taking one before?

Cesc made a difference when he came on in the second half, Spain looked much better with him in the middle and I was so impressed with his cool penalty taking. What a star he is!

"This is wonderful, it is impossible to find the words to express such an emotion," said Cesc after Spain won the PSO.
Lou the Gunneress
Cesc could walk into the Croatia starting XI while Modric would even be behind Cesc in the pecking order of the Spanish midfield.

Cesc is much more of a super sub and he's been proving that at the top level since he was 16/17 years old while Modric hasnt even played a minute in the EPL.

Cesc's been a sub for them not bcos he's behind Xavi or Iniesta. He's just behind the partnership between Xavi and Iniesta formed at Barca. He's also behind the best strike partnership up front in Villa and Torres which forces Aragones to use a 4-4-2. I give him credit for doing that instead of trying to accommodate the many good CM's they've got. But still in a 4-4-2, yes, I would have started Cesc ahead of Iniesta. You can see the immediate impact he made when he came on, not just once, but 3 times in this tournament now. And when Cesc started, he also did the job very well in the 3rd group game. Xabi Alonso and de la Red were unused subs. Spain have the best midfield in the tournament.

123spurs...do you have any sense? even if cesc doesnt make the starting line up for spain how does that make modric better than him? it is spain vs croatia...croatia is a good team dont get me wrong...but look at Spain's midfield...nuff said.

Great influence on the pitch, nicely taken penalty, so I was pleased for Cesc- he should start next game. But sorry to say this Cesc, I hate that racist pig Aragones so I hope the Russians win the semi-final, which I think they will anyway. Arshavin is awesome- bring him home Boss PLEEEAAASSSEEE!

Gunnerkid107 you're right, "The Arsenal midfielder had never taken a penalty in his professional career but kept his nerve to slot the ball past Gianluigi Buffon and set up a Semi-Final clash with Russia on Thursday." What a great first! http://www.arsenal.com/article.asp?thisNav=News&article=493128&lid=NewsHeadline&Title=Euro+2008:+Fabregas+fires+Spain+into+semis

I for one am glad he's not starting. I was especially glad he wasn't starting against the Italians. The less time he spends on the pitch, the less chance he gets injured and worn out. Sorry Cesc, I'm just being selfish!!

If you care about Spain at all, this is a very interesting and well-written article - Spain have got their belief back as "Last night was as much about faith as football": http://blogs.guardian.co.uk/sport/2008/06/23/y_viva_espana_spain_may_have_a.html

I think Aragones will stick with the same old line-up against Russia, using Cesc/Cazorla/Alonso/de la Red as subs.

Keep Cesc on the bench, the boy needs a rest. Even though he was arguably Spains best player when he came on.

This tournament has been one to break longstanding records. Croatia broke their terrible record against Germany, Turkey broke their bad record against the Czechs, Italy broke their 30-year record against France, the Dutch broke their 3-year record against Italy and now Spain has broken their record against Italy. And Cesc (and Casillas) made sure it happened! How cool is this kid? Up against the world's best keeper, with that horrible June 22 jinx in everyone's minds, the whole world watching, his country's fortunes on his shoulders...and he just coolly slots it in! Kid's got balls! :-D

Jaelle Spain's record is 88 years old! Record broken, demons exorcised, jinx undone, nightmare ended, shadow removed, ghosts expelled, fear banished, curse lifted, whatever you call it. It's even better than beating the Italians in normal time I say!
