Eboue "I am a midfielder"

After his reservations were quelled by Arsene Wenger Emmanuel Eboue now considers himself as a midfielder he claims in an interview given to Arsenal magazine.

Having told the boss that he felt happier playing at right back he was told that he was quick and could give more going forward in midfield. When Eboue said he would like to return to his former position he was told "No Manu, I believe in you and I think you`re going to be a top midfielder if you believe in yourself".

Now he is happy to play in midfield and considers the home game against Milan in the champions league as a turning point for him. "Against Milan I was all over the pitch - attacking and defending - and it was good for me. It gave me a lot of confidence - I hadn`t played well in the previous few games, but the manager gave me belief and I was ready for that game"

Believing that he works well interchanging positions with Sagna he doesn`t see Bacary as a threat to his place in the team but rather more of a help. He cites the value he brings to defensive play in saying "I can help at the back and also go forward to assist the attackers….it`s important for the team" A point similar to that which Wenger made himself when addressing shareholders recently about the need for defensive balance in midfield.

Reassuringly for supporters Eboue tells us that he wants to learn more about his new position and come back next season even stronger. Arsenal fans will be very pleased to hear it. If he does he wouldn`t be the first to prove his detractors wrong - nor probably would he be the last.

I hope he can prove me wrong, but there is no way he is a midfielder, now way. He has nothing to offer. If we'd have had a proper winger last season who could score and assist the probability would have been we would have challeneged to the last day .... or possibly even won the league. The distinct lack of product from Eboue last season was there for all to see.

Eboue could pobably be a good and effective midfielder.... in Luton Town, Port Vale or Spurs ... some team like that (no offence Luton or Port Vale!). He is simply not good enough for Arsenal. I agree with Rocky7 that Eboue has nothing to offer. He'll never get us goals. For god sake, he makes Hleb look like Ian Wright in the goalscoring department. And apart from that, his attitude stinks. He complains to the Refs so much, he reminds me of a Man U or Chelsea player.

Eboue just does not have the skill set to play mid field and on top of that he is not even tough, so he doenst even make up for his lack of skill by being a pain in the backside for other teams. I also did not see this great defensive prowess that he and Wenger has, but thats only me. back up right back is the best i see for this young man at present. Blessings

He's not a midfielder, he's depriving a village (somewhere) of it's idiot. I hope he, AdeBarnDoor and Hleb all ***** off (not sour grapes btw, I've never liked any of them, Hleb=No end product, Ade=No middle or end product, Eboue=Cold product). I wish AW would just pay the money and take Benzema, Richards and Ashley Young (the two englishmen being ardent Arsenal fans), but he'll probably go for Santa-Cruz and Arse-Shavin (who will engineer a move to La Liga a year later after having a great year with us).

I believe the headline should read. Eboue "I am a Midfielder................ Just not a very good one". Sorry lads but I think Eboue's as good as Phil Neville in midfield! I've found myself screaming at MOTD last season when the teamsheet's come up and you've got Eboue at right wing and Walcott struggling to make the bench.

If some idiots would get of the band wagon and get behind him he might produce a bit more. When he is running at defenders, overlapping the RB and crossing he is quite good. But most of the fans like to groan on the first mistake he makes. A player wont get better if you boo him. People gave Theo chance after chance even when he was the worst player on the pitch and chanting his name. If he starts next season, lets give him a chance first before writing him off

When he first broke into the team and replaced Lauren, I thought wow what a great player we've got ourselves here. He's then gone onto struggle to be consistent at right back defensively and also an all-round not a nice fella who gets on most of our nerves. He does have some great attributes and I once read Pat Rice saying he is a potential world-beater which is while they all believe in him so much. Arsene just loves his convertibles doesn't he!

No Eboue, you're not a midfielder...or a defender...or a winger, what you are is the worst player to ever wear an Arsenal shirt and I won't believe Arsenal are serious about winning anything until they give you the boot. My good will towards an increasing group of Arsenal players is running out, I'll be honest, I feel a bit bitter towards this useless clown earning ***** loads of money each week to do nothing but run around a field for 90 mins and somehow avoid creating anything worth while, with the current economy situation, paying big money to watch an Arsenal side with this overpaid idiot in it is difficult to take.

This is Wenger's fault for feeding into this jerks ego. If Walcott doesn't start on the wide right next season, we have to seriously consider Arsense can't admit his master plan is a failure. Eboue is a disaster in midfield. Could you imagine if we would have had Rosicky on the left, and Hleb (effing traitor) all year, instead of the next Viera-Diaby, (yeah right) instead, we would of on the league by half a dozen points.

I'm not going to tell you Eboue had a good season, he didn't. I think he's excellent back up for Sagna but still has to prove himself as a midfielder. But to say he's the worst player in our history is sofar over the top it's astounding. The likes of van Bronckhorst, Meade and Hillier would be unbelievably flattered to hear that. Eboue formed part of a defence that was inpenetrable in the Champions League, he also proved he does have some final product in the 06/07 campaign with some impressive assists. It just confirms tome this annoying habit Gooners have of finding a scapegoat and just pinning all the team's problems on that one player.

To be honest, I'm resigned to watching Eboue in an Arsenal shirt, coz Wenger isnt going to change his mind and there's no point raving about Eboue's attitude anymore. I'm being unbelievably optimistic but if he could just prove us wrong, that faint little hope is still worth holding onto, given Wenger's past record with player performances.

Are you an Idiot if you have a different opinion? I remember many getting on Walcotts back (though i thought that was silly) but look what he has produced of late. The problem with Eboue is that he didnt do enough to make you feel he was good enough at that position(even with time). Well we say he was good defensively (I dont see it as a midfielder) but he give away the ball way too much for us to be taken aback by a few good crosses. look he is getting paid quite well and should produce much better than he has, that not anyones fault but his. He is/was a decent right back i think. I agree with LD that he is being used as a scapegoat by many, not cool! Be Blessed!

Chimbonda a better right back than Eboue????? HA HA do me a favour!!!
MrArsenal
Eboue doesn't tick enough boxes to be entirely comfortable with him in midfield but it's not too hard to see the reasoning for his deployment depending on the make up of the rest of midfield. Supporters often whinged about the lack of experienced back up at times last year. At the least he offers that in two positions for next season even if the quality so far isn't enough for first choice in every game.

LD, he is easily the worst player in Arsenal history. Yes there have been some real donkeys playing for Arsenal, but they were either bad players or they had bad attitudes, none of them managed to combine the attitude and the crapness to the levels at which Eboue functions. First he is a bad bad player, people are constantly confusing athleticism with fotball ability, yes he is athletic but he should have been an athlete and not a footballer because he has no understanding of the game, secondly he has a terrible attitude which he has not even attempted to improve, which means he does not listen to his manager and so there is no chance of improvement. I 100% maintain that he is the worst Arsenal player I have ever seen, perhaps there was a worse player back in the 19th century, but I wasn't alive then so I don't know. But during the entire 20th century right in to the early 21st century, Eboue stands right at the top of the pyramid of crapness.

To me, It wasn't all Eboue. He just sucks as a winger, as a right back he's quite effective, but neither he, or more importantly Wenger sees him there. It was the Prof's failure to add on in January, or last summer even, when he knew he would lose possibly four players to the ANC, Ade didn't, go but he easily could of, to an already short squad. Getting rid of Diarra and not replacing him was also a disaster. We ran out of steam.

I wasnt saying people with a different opinion are idiots. People who are quick to use him as a scapegoat, jump on the hate wagon, and whether he plays well or not boo him are idiots. I remember one game last season he was the best player on the pitch for a long time, the first time he went down people started to groan and boo. When i watched i on MOTD it was a clear penalty, but because he has a reputation didnt get it. I hope Theo starts and plays next season, but if Eboue plays lets maybe show our support and he can show what he can do. He was brilliant the first season he was here.

I consider myself a good 5 aside player and a good winger/attacking midfielder on the 11 aside pitch. If my manager turned round and said, i think you could play right back i think it would take a long time to be able to do it well. Lets see how Eboue does in the midfield in the first few months of his second season in MF. If he is rubbish and shows a poor attitude then i will hold my hands up and say, fair enough he is cra*. If he adapts well and looks good, then i hope it silences the boo boys and we get behind him and the rest of our team.

I do not believe Eboue is a good RM/RW now, I have strong doubts he will become one. But I have much stronger belief in Arsene Wenger. At the end of the day, no matter how I feel about Eboue, the great man himself knows his player inside out, I don't; he bases his judgement on working with his team everyday, I base mine on watching them 1-2 times a week. What can I do apart from trusting someone I and you and the club and everyone have trusted so long?

Eboue is nowhere near Arsenal's worst player "ever"--there have been too many other candidates for that role. I do not blame Eboue exclusively for our failures last season (it was a team failure). But I can only surmise that Eboue in training is something wildly superior to what we see on the pitch week in and week out, otherwise I cannot understand what Arsene sees in him. He's a decent player but there are so many other superior players for either one of his two positions out there, I can't understand why Arsene thinks he's superior to them. I am stuck between saying "we will not win anything if Eboue continues in the first team" or "we will win something DESPITE Eboue being in the first team." That said, I would like Arsene to put Walcott in as an automatic first team player in a new position every week and see how long before all those who scapegoat Eboue in knee-jerk fashion (while cheering on Walcott) would start losing patience with Theo as well.

I'm gonna go out on an extremely fragile limb and predict a stellar season ahead for Eboooo!!ue, lets face it the only way is up for our very own pantomime villain, his behaviour could not possibly become any more infantile, his cheating no more blatant and as for his shooting I firmly believe he will force at least one keeper to actually make some form of save this year as opposed to stinging the palms of the upper tier ticket holders. He'll get his own tune - it won't be a derogatory one, sales of his shirt will sky rocket and he'll get to host a chat show on Dave or summit. I will not be putting money on any of this though.

Niko, tell me what you're drinking, i want a life supply , geez, he's got to be a bencher this year. Walcott suffers on the defensive end, but we've seen Eboue miss golden opportunities up front. Sagna is the man at right back, he should be cover, but we all know opening match who'll be right wing don't we ,and all my, and any other Gonner's bitching won't change the fact.

I am currently drinking the lifeblood of Tottenham virgins zen (and hell am I thirsty - short supply and all that). All I know is that countless players lambasted over a poor season (Drogba anyone? Hleb was voted the leagues worst player by one site at the end of last season, noone was fussed over Flamini leaving last close season and most were in favour of his sale, the list is endless) go on to have a far superior following season. One ****e season as an introduction to midfield does'nt mean Booey'll never improve. Don't get me wrong I feel the bloke has brought shame upon our club with his cringeworthy antics, but I do think we'll see a marked improvement and maturity in his play this season.

honest debate ,I think gunners, Eboue really isn't Arsenal to me, and others, but no one wants to see him fail, we just fear a repeat of rubbish this season with a better option in Walcott, and his whinging on the pitch isn't something I'm ever gonna buy into.

Come on LD Eboue does it twice in a game while Cesc and RvP are only like a few times in a season! You can also ask if the Liverpool fans mind Torres diving all the time lol or the Spain fans mind Villa doing it yesterday? Theatrics look worse when (a) the player's not delivering the goods, (b) he isn't remotely good-looking. You said "let's be honest" so that's what I'm doing.

As a midfielder Eboue sucks IMO, but most will agree that when he first broke into the team as a right back he was a breath of fresh air. I lost count of the people of opposing teams asking who he was and that he looked excellent. When he used to attack down the right s a full back he wasn't really expected to produce an end product, after all he was a defender. But now he is expected to produce, and is finding it a difficult transition becoming a provider rather than a defender. Can you imagine playing Hleb or Rosicky at full back!!! I think he should be used as back up for Sagna, and not have to enter the final third, something which he clearly struggles with.

Well not "always" but you get the idea about Arsene being right most of the time.

Afri I really hope so! I never wrote any Arsenal player off but still ate 2 good pieces of humble pie last year for Flamini and Almunia. Even Ade and Hleb surprised me a little bit. I definitely hope Eboue prove me wrong and, as always, Arsene right!

One thing I will say in his defence is that he seems to be a very popular player in the dressing room. Going by the various interviews on Arseanl Online, he seems to be the biggest character in the squad and goes a long way to bringing smiles to all the players faces. That can't be overlooked.
