Arsene's Chequebook is Still Open

Arsene seems intent on keeping everyone guessing what actions he might take in terms of the transfer market. Earlier this week he had dampened expectations somewhat by indicating his reluctance to 'kill young players` by blocking their path into the first team with new imports. Having invested time and money in recruiting and incentivising young players he was naturally keen not to undermine assurances he had given them that they would get their chances earlier with Arsenal than other teams.

Today he has told Setanta Sports after the pre-season friendly against Barnet that he still expects to recruit this summer. Giving his thoughts on the type of player he said, "We can get one player with experience, yes. It could happen yes, one, maybe two maximum, but one certainly. I cannot give you any names but we still think to bring one player in."

Explaining his dealings so far he said "We lost two good players but we bought two players and we have good young players coming through. We don`t live in an ideal world. Flamini was at the end of his contract, Gilberto I gave him the opportunity to leave because he was 32 and [was offered] a three-year contract and that was in a strong position."

There is an attraction to join Arsenal, believe me, because we have more demands than players who want to leave us he continued I think Flamini was free to leave last year and nobody cared about it, you know. He had a good season and then he left. But he was free to go last year and that is part of football.

The Boss also believes that Adebayor will stay at the club, Adebayor is under contract. We expect him to turn up on Monday and practise with us. I am very confident he will be here at the start of the season.

Great to hear the boss say this. But lets hope he brings in some experience. We've lost 3 pretty experienced players this summer and brought in Ramsey and Nasri, but an older head or two is still needed IMO.

Someone is on the way, I feel it. Wenger's comments lead me to guess that there is a transfer negotiation in full swing. The sly old fox. Difference between Wenger and the rest of the managers is that he has the good grace to keep his dealings a secret until something has been agreed with the other club. Who will we bring in? Well that's anyones guess .... this is Arsene Wenger we're talking about!!

In that case he will be some 12 year old we've never heard of!!!!!LOL

what that proves is what it proves every year - wenger knows what he is doing, who he is signing and when he is signing them - he always keeps his targets secret, he always keeps his signings secret and he always keeps surprising us! we are in good hands, like we are every year - and we know we'll be challenging for honours again - just need that little bit of luck this year - that is the only thing that kept us from winning the champs league and prem this season - and everyone knows that, not just gunner fans

Gunnerkid said there was that "classic Arsene grin" i.e. :> yeah indeed. Now that I've watched that interview in video, I'm confident that he's got something good up his sleeves, he just didn't want to tell us until it's 100% done. I have a feeling the "experience" he referred to might mean he's signing someone already playing in the EPL, to make up for the EPL exp lost in Gilberto/Flam/Hleb/Jens.

I don't know MrA, it looks like Ade's staying and I don't think we lack attacking players as things stand. I'd start with the DM position cos that's the biggest hole in the team right now. I personally thought Barry was a good candidate ever since he said he'd considering leaving Villa for CL football, way before he started getting linked to anyone. But he only really caught my eye with impressive consistency last season, I thought he was just solid/good before. But I think Arsene would like his versatility, especially when Hoyte's probably on the cards and Barry can be a back-up full-back, a utility man like Flamini with a bit more passing ability but without the crazy work rate really. I also always liked Xabi Alonso and was surprised that Benitez gave him so few games last season, which was part of the reason why he didn't do too well. But when given the chance, he did well enough for Spain. All that said though, I don't see Arsene spending so much, I honestly don't know!

Have to agree with you about Barry. Last year he really seemed to perform on a different level. Maybe because he's reaching his prime, which would be an ideal time to get a good solid player who can both tackle and pass. The only down side seems his apparent desire to join Liverpool. Alonso would be a good signing, and like you i was surprised he got so few games last season. I know everyone is saying we need someone in the Flamoney mould, but surely Alonso is capable of putting a tackle in? The press seem to think we have sounded these players out, buy maybe the cunning Mr Wenger is waiting as long as possible knowing full well both clubs want/need to sell, and he might get a better deal!! ;-)

I just don't get it though, even if Alonso gets sold, they'll still have Mascherano and Gerrard first-choice in the middle...unless Barry wants to play on the left side of midfield?

Barry seems expensive and I'm not sure that Arsene wants to give up on Justin Hoyte yet. I would also think he is less than impressed with Martin O'Neill revealing our possible interest if true as he likes to do everything under the radar. The strengths of Barry are his premiership experience and that he can play left back if necessary. Whether he can play the Arsenal style though is another matter. If he is coming it should be sooner rather than later so that he has time to settle into the team and get his head right as I'm sure all the summer speculation has not helped him mentally.

MON seems a bit desparate to sell now, hence telling the press about Pat Rice contacting him. Alonso would be the cheaper option without doubt. But i have a feeling Arsene has just asked about these players and no more and will pull out someone completely different!!!

Angelo Palombo is Italian, equally capable as a CB but is naturally a DM. He plays for Sampdoria.

Neither Barry nor Alonso are what we need, good players though they are. In terms of technical, passing players Arsenal are better stacked than any club in Europe. We need a DCM who will roll his sleeves up and be a bit terrier like. Alonso and Barry aren't that type of player.

Doesn't appear that we're getting Yaya???

I agree with LD. Having seen the workrate that Flamini put in last year, in contrast to the more positional play by Gilberto in seasons before, I think Wenger may veer towards someone like Flamini that has a tremendous engine and is unselfish enough to let Cesc and the others to bomb forward. The most ideal would be someone with the stamina of Flamini and the positional sense of Gilberto. I wonder if that could have been Yaya Toure, but I'm sure there are a few others that Wenger is aware of in a similar mould. The thing about Wenger is that he already has a plan b, c and d going on in his mind, so would probably know 3-4 players each position around the world that could be good options.

We lack a bit of height/size at the moment and will be vulnerable in dead-ball situations. That's the major problem Arsene hasn't addressed so far. This means the keeper must be brave and collect the ball more often. Last year we were ok for a while but at times Almunia flapped too much. I have no stats to back it up but in the past 5 years, our average height must have fallen somewhat.

I have to agree on LD's point too, although I like Barry and Xabi as players. But Gilberto as a sit-back DM also complemented Cesc ok, so I don't know. That's why I've been raving on and on about Yaya but it's apparently not to be - Guardiola would just have to be a big fool to sell him. Can we get a workaholic like Flamini who can also pass well like Barry/Xabi? Someone like Miguel Veloso? Well he's not a giant, but he's like Gallas/Kolo's height. Left-footed too. Good to complement Cesc? :D

Mr A, palombo is just a personal preference, but i watch serie A also for fun, and i have to tell you, palombo has a never say die attitude, and he is a pretty physical player, XD

I know it's highly unlikely to happen but I would love to see Veloso in an Arsenal shirt. He has a good engine (although not quite as good as Flmini's), can put in the tackle and has a good range of passing. I think him and Cesc would give a great balance in midfield. Like I say though, I don't see it happening.

I worry about our size too. The Untouchables were a very big imposing team. We may be the most skillful, but we have a team of midgets!

Wenger's comments are no surprise. Of course we're still in the market. I'm a little more relaxed now that Ade will stay and the exodus has stopped. Now, we only need to look at incoming players.
