'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Clichy on Press Relations

Newspapers are both abusers and abused. To listen to some footballing figures the newspapers are the founts of all misunderstandings about their clubs and players. Some players do have a more honest grip of what the media is all about as Gael Clichy demonstrated when interviewed by Arsenal magazine. "…Journalists have a job to do, and in my opinion, if you want to be in a newspaper you will be in a newspaper; if you don`t want to be, then you won`t be" he has said.

The veracity of stories distorted by the media is easier to check by seeking out the source of the stories, original interviews, magazine articles and the like. It is less easy to check the stories that are planted in the papers by players, agents and managers for their own ends. This summer, as much as any, has seen clubs shamelessly use the media to 'tap up` players. The more cynical among us may even see Levys announcement to the press that he is lodging a complaint against United and Liverpool as using the media for his own ends. Possibly to speed up deals he wants to go through sooner rather than later at prices he is happy with so that he can use the funds before the transfer window shuts. Just conjecture of course but whether that`s the case or not why does he need to make it public? He can file a complaint with the FA and have it handled discreetly but presumably it suits him to use the publicity for his own ends.

Adebayor isn`t the only example of a player using the media to carry out contract negotiations with his club. He isn`t the only player to have miscalculated the extent to which he can use fans fears of team changes to try to put pressure on his club. He most definitely isn`t the only football figure to claim, like an indignant motorist caught for speeding, 'It weren`t me guv`. That 99% of the newspaper stories were untrue without revealing which parts were true. The media will distort and manipulate what they are told but then don`t plant the seeds appears to be the message from our left back. Newspapers have a use in promoting certain causes but most contractual objectives are best served and secured in less public forums.

Gael is clear on the right way to deal with that "…For me being in a newspaper would be difficult because I don`t like that, I prefer to do things right and as calmly as possible". He might even be seen as taking a swipe at certain players as he continues "…for other players it is different. If you want to stay you stay and if you want to go you go. When you are right in your head about what you want to do then it`s easy."

Football fans complaining about the media are like sailors complaining about the sea - it goes with the job. But you would expect more industry professionals to show similar professionalism to that displayed by Clichy.

It looks like the lad has his head screwed on. I think Adebayor's behavoir will backfire. You could tell he's now got the fans on his back at Barnet (and he wasn't in the squad)! After everyone loving him last year, he's got to prove himself all over again. Is it true Kolo's got Malaria?
navydave
Yes its true. But i dont know if him being out for the begining of the seasons is. I heard somewhere that with proper medication it can be cured within 2 weeks. I would imagine that he will have the best treatment available. I dont know if you can carry on training while on the treatment. I would imagine the papers are blowin it out of proportion to add to the so called "Arsenal Crisis".

Funny that - if you don't make a lot of noise, he says, there won't be a lot of noise. Thank god for some of the more understated players... Papers might get some planted stories but that doesn't mean they have a right to put out all their self-generated garbage. I'm one sailor who finds it hard to sympathise with a thief who gets his pockets picked now and again.

I actually began to write a very similar piece last night on 'tapping up' inspired by Clichy and Levy's comments too. But I deleted it cos I'd had a few London Pride's! Clichy is absolutely spot on, time and again I ask the same question, can anyone name Clichy's agent? I'm hoping the current silence around Fabregas represents a sea change for him too. I really hope Clichy maintains this attitude because he is one of very, very few players out there who doesn't drift effortlessly into **** territory.

the problem is when journalist start fabricating news or report point of views as facts.

Did you guys watch Gael the captain's post-match interview? Love him.

Terrific, this guy is quickly becoming one of my favourite Arsenal players. Like LD says, no one can name his agent, and he has a point. How many times do you hear of Clichy being in the news for the wrong reasons. Adebayor grossly miscalculated, but I think Wenger will overlook that, as he does often with his players' faults.
prits
Agree LD - the silence around Cesc this off-season is quite amazing given his performances for Spain in the Euros. Hopefully it's a sign that he meant it when he said he intends to stay at Arsenal and is happy here, therefore there is nothing to be gained by him or his agents talking to the media. Even though there have been attempts to turn Hlebs comments and Cesc's trip to Uzbekistan in the company of some of his international team mates (who also happen to play for Barcelona) into an opportunity to cast aspersions on his future.

clichy has not said a wrong word so far in his arsenal career, and i admire him for that. in fact our "silent achievers" like clichy, toure, bert, almunia, sagna, have been showing the way to the rest of the team and prem lge for quite a while. i just wished some of the primadonnas like ade and ronaldo would take note.
supersof
Ask any Arsenal fan and they'll tell you Clichy is one of our best players. He also garners a lot of respect from rival supporters for his attitude, with Barca and Madrid looking to cherry pick our players, it does make you wonder why they're not clammering for Gael. The answer is obviously because he doesn't invite the attention and also the aforementioned clubs are mugs who clammer for superstars to appease their fans.

paul ownz i hope he is ready for the season start but ive suffered from malaria before and 2 weeks is possible but highly unlikely ven with the bes treatment he would not be at full strength in 2 weeks...as for clichy he speaks very well and i think he is taking a slight swipe at adebywhore. i hope all this goingz onz puts ade in check and humbles him a lil bit

It's funny how the net blurs the fact that we really from very different worlds. I'm Kenyan, and this side of the sahara malaria is so common, you'd be looked at with funny eyes if you appeared ignorant about the disease, you don't know how long it would take to get back to good, etc. Anyway, the malaria I've suffered from more times than I care to count would keep you from going to school or work for no more than 5 days. The first three days are the ones you say you are actually sick, the other two are the ones you're recovering. To get back to a level where you can train, that's a bit different. I'm a pseudo-amateur distance athlete (I typically do 12 mile morning runs - this is Kenya, "amateur" has a slightly different shade), and if I was to get malaria, I'd expect to be back running in no more than two weeks.
About my running, I started running last year, just for fun, then got hooked. Now, I'm 29, but our own Paul Tergat is still going strong at 38 or thereabouts (Jamaica's Merlene Ottey-remember her?- missed qualifying for 100M sprint at Beijing by 28 hundredths of a second and she is 48!!), so I have this nutty idea about getting good enough to represent Kenya in the marathon in 2012 in London. Imagine that, bonafide gooner winning gold running through London. Pretty cool huh? I hope the marathon route will take us to North London!
What??? I can fantasize if I feel like!!
Gaga
Sounds cool guys! So Kolo will be well and running again in about 2 weeks, maybe match-fit in another week or two, yes? Phew! Hey Gaga work hard and you never know, really hope to see you running in London!
