'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Billy G To Keep The (C)

Arsene Wenger has confirmed his controversial decision to name William Gallas as club captain last season will remain in place for the forthcoming campaign.

Many Arsenal fans, stirred by the media hype of that fateful game at St Andrews last season, believe Gallas is not the right man for the job, however Wenger disagrees.

'If he plays, he will be captain,' said Wenger. 'If he does not play, it will be somebody else. But William will be the club captain, yes.'

Had to be the obvious choice.Maybe Kolo could do the job.

Only guy for the job. Cesc will be ready to take the mantle soon, but let's not overload him too early. Billy G did a very good job last year, sitting down in the centre circle doesn't change that for me. I don't really see how it can. Unless of course Chelsea fans are campaigning tohave JT stripped of the captaincy for his many teary outbursts?
Little Dutch
I am 100% behind this decision. Vice-captains: Kolo, Almunia, Cesc and Clichy.

There can be no other. Cesc can take over Billy when he leaves/retires and will be the perfect age then too.

Wenger was right to give Gallas the impression, at the end of last season, that it wasn't an automatic decision. Just as he was right to confirm his captaincy now. Gallas' faults have been overstated just as much as his qualities have been understated

tears of joy for him well done gallas

No better choice. Like Amos says, if Gallas was made to sweat a bit, he'll be the better for it. At the risk of sounding like Keegan, I would love it if we won the title with a great Gallas contribution, then have to listen to all the TV pundits telling us how great a captain he was!

Time will tell whether this was a good choice, but it looks to be a good one. Billy has already said he will learn from his mistakes and thats a positive attitude to have. Last season, his positives outweighed the negatives by a fair margin.

Kolo would be the choice for me, although it is a difficult decision i guess. I got Gallas in my FF team, so i hope he does well for you

oy wenger. im gonna be captain again this season. you got a problem with that. er no mr gallas what ever you say. thats alright then. as long as we know who the boss is there should'nt be any problems. ALRIGHT. yes i understand william i wont give you no trouble!!

I agree with Amos - Arsene was right to make Gallas sweat a bit over the summer. And now we're back playing games, he's also right to confirm the extension now. From his quotes I got the impression that he also gave Gallas a bit of a talking-to in private - he would have done. I also think Gallas is an intelligent guy and must have learnt from his mistakes. Just like we field young players, we give them a learning curve. Last year was Gallas's probation period and I believe he should be grown into the role now.
