Has Gareth Barry Sent O'Neil Insane?

Martin O'Neil claims Arsene Wenger 'made a slip' when Wenger responded to the question if he was interested in Gareth Barry with the simple statement 'There is always interest.'

The Villa manager feels that Wenger has spoken out of turn (despite the Arsenal gaffer not actually naming any names) and says it's a bit out of character.

O'neil said, 'I`ve heard nothing from Arsene Wenger himself, so it is strange. I read his comments and I just thought they were strange.'

'Bizarre, really.'

'I don`t know whether you can say there isn`t any honour among managers any more. What I would say is that Arsene Wenger doesn`t usually come out with comments like that.'

'I accept he has made a bit of a slip, shall we say. I`m sure I will slip up myself in that way, one day. There are plenty of slips you can make as a manager, you know, like not winning games for a start.`

Forgetting that Wenger never actually said anything about Gareth Barry (Just O'Neil falling for the media bullshit) the Villa manager seems to be forgetting that earlier in the summer he himself admitted there had been interest expressed by Arsenal, more accurately Pat Rice, and that Martin let that information 'slip'.

So this begs the question, has Gareth Barry driven the Irishman round the bend?

There seems to be something of a game going on here with a triangle between Benitez, O'Neill and Wenger. Benitez wants barry, Wenger wants Alonso and O'Neill wants loadsamoney. What we have learned this week is from Benitez that Wenger has been in contact regarding Alonso. We have heard today from O'Neill that he hasn't heard anything from Wenger in respect of Barry. So that clears that up then - of the two it's Alonso he is after. That won't happen unless Benitez gets Barry so I guess it'll be plan B at midnight on the 1st September if it doesn't.

Great decetive work Amos!! I wish Benitez would get off his fat arse and finish this ..... it would be so much easier for everyone. He's willing to pay 8Million for Pennant and 20 Mill for Keane .... come on Rafa, get yer finger out son!
Rocky7
We wish, Rocky. But we know Rafa is not the man in charge of money.. hehe he'd refer you to Parry..

I really like O'Neill, but all he has done all summer is whinge about this Barry saga to the press. I didn't hear a peep from Benitez until O'Neill went to the press three days in a row about how upset he was about Liverpool's interest. Basically, yes, this has sent him around the bend. I wish everyone involved would just shut up about this transfer and either conclude it or bin it.

Agreed on all counts LD - Which is why I can't be too harsh on MON, he's one of the few likable managers in the game today!!

This is typical O'Neill. Earlier in the summer he accused Rafa of lying when it was reported by the press that Rafa said he had a continuous talk with O'Neill regarding Barry. Rafa didn't say that, he only said that he had a phone call with O'Neill discussing Barry weeks before news of the bid leaked to the press, something that O'Neill himself confirmed. The press put their own spin on it and O'Neill believed them.

MON just has to put a reasonable price tag on Barry's head- that would start a big merry-go-round on midfielders.

Hahaha MON sounds like a little kid crying at the playground. If he wants this Barry deal to die down maybe he should keep his mouth shut. The only person still talking about Barry is MON. SHUT UP MON no one cares about Barry except for you and some Villa fans.

Arsene has never openly said he is after Barry, but when his name was mentioned, he wasn't going to say there is no interest, just in case. I don't think Barry is first choice on Arsene's list, if he's on the list at all. Martin O'Neill is the one who blabbed about the phone call from Pat Rice, probably in an attempt to force Liverpool's hand. And I'm sure Pat Rice's phone call was also part of this same game.

MoN is one of the most likeable and genuine managers around. I support 100% any tactics he has used till now even though he does appear a bit frazzled sometimes. It's not easy to be in charge of a mid-tier club and try to defend yourself when you see the big boys coming to pick out some of your best players. If he has to play a game or two like the one above, then all credit to him. I just wish Rafa and Liverpool would eff off with their shambles of a buying strategy. "Uncle Parry, please, I want one of these!"..."No no Rafa that ones too pricey!"...."Yeah but you wasted 20m on Keane"... "Now watch it Rafa or I'll stop your pocket money"...."Waaaah, waaaah I gotta have one of those...s'not fair!"

MON was the one who 1st blabbed to the press about Arsenal's interest in Barry, which was only a casual call from Rice and not a firm offer. There is no way that he should be whinging about it. This Barry saga has certainly driven him around the bend.

it seems that vital Villa doesn't agree with you. That Wenger, and Benitez, tapped Barry because they are afraid of Villa displacing them in the CL. http://www.astonvilla.vitalfootball.co.uk/article.asp?a=509277
