Win A Copy Of The Bromley Boys

In the late 1960s, in the warm glow of England winning the World Cup, Dave Roberts, like most teenage boys his age, was football mad. There was just one difference: rather than supporting the likes of Arsenal or Manchester United, Dave`s team of choice was the ever so slightly less glamorous Bromley Football Club (who currently play in the Blue Square Conference South) - one of the last genuinely amateur football teams left, fighting for survival in the lowest non-league division.

The Bromley Boys is the story of Bromley`s worst ever season. It is a funny and heart-warming tale of football at the very bottom: Dave turns up to each match with his football boots in his bag, just in case the team are a player short; the crowd is always announced as 400 as no-one can be bothered to count; the team ship so many goals that in one match, the taunting opposition fans actually lose count of the score.

When Saturday Comes called The Bromley Boys 'genuinely funny - throughly recommended'. The Bromley Boys is published by Portico priced £10.99. For more information go to

My local side! I used to live a ten minute walk from Norman Park where they play.

I once saw Bromley play an Arsenal XI at Norman Park some years back. I can't remember much about the match (it was that memorable) other than George Armstrong was coaching our side and I think Matthew Rose, who was a promising youngster at the time, turned out for us.

I remember Matthew Rose! I think he was at QPR until recently. It's possible I was at that game too, it used to be an annual pre season fixture because our Ladies side occasionally used Norman Park and I went a couple of time when I was a kid.

It wasn't all that long ago Gaga! About 12 years or so I reckon. Matthew Rose is still playing - only for Yeovil now.
