Djourou signs for the long term

Arsenal has anounced that giant Swiss defender Johan Djourou has signed a new long-term contract.

Though he has been with the club for 5 years his injury afflicted season following a loan spell at Birmingham restricted him to just two outings last season. So far this season he has made twice as many already with four appearances, including one as an emergency right back substitute against Bolton at the weekend, following an injury to Gael Clichy. He seems set to get a game in the Carling Cup against Sheffield United.

Selecting him for the CL qualifiers against FC Twente Wenger said "He had an unsuccessful season last year because he was injured at Birmingham. It took him a while to get back, nearly until the end of the season.

"But don't forget he is still only 21 and for a central defender that is very young. And he has already had many appearances in Europe."

This summer he expressed his discontent with the failure of the previous Swiss national team manager, Kobi Kuhn, to select him for any of the European Championship games this summer but has had more luck with the new man, Ottmar Hitzfeld, who has used him in the world cup qualifiers while Senderos has been injured.

With Senderos out on a season long loan, which may eventually become a permanent move, Djourou now has a real chance to stake his claim to a starting place in a central defense which isn't among the tallest in the premier league.

Good honest pro Djourou. Not glitz or bling with him - there might but you don't read stories about him falling out of night clubs at 2am do you? He's not Tony Adams, Puyol, Nesta, EBJT (yet), but he's good, tall and strong and I'm glad he's with us than not. It's another example of a young player who's looked at what happens to those who leave Arsenal without being patient and end up regretting it (Vieira aside who has done well). He's on good (realistic) money, is learning his trade at one of the best footballing clubs in the world and knows that at 21 he has the rest of his career infront of him. Johan, thanks for signing and here's to the next 5 years, may you go on to be a world beater.

He should be playing alongside Gallas already.

I think thats illustrated fairly clearly by the fact that Djourou is still with us, while big Phillipe, bless him, is not.

Good to see that Jonah has signed a new long-term contract with The Arsenal, this guy has alot to offer, I hope he get more chances to show us what a good player he is.

He will be a future star for the club. I have faith in his abilities.

but i hope he gets his chance pretty soon. dont want to c another potential walk out the door
gunnerchi
He should be first choice CD right now! We won't win the league with a first choice Gallas-Toure pairing.

Congrats Johan, keep up the good work! I hope he'll play against Sheff Utd tomorrow. :)
