What ever reasons Arsene may give for benching Adebayor yesterday, I'm of the opinion that it was due to his lazy disposition that has followed him round for most of the season.
99% of Gooners know how valuable Adebayor is to this team, and know what he brings to our play even when he doesn't have the ball.
However just of late that value has decreased and his participation had become minimal, non-existent on occasion. Indeed after the Fenerbahce game last week I spoke of my desire to see him benched, partly because his form deserved it, but also to see the reaction from the big man, to test his mentality.
Well yesterday I got my wish as Nicklas Bendtner took the place of our Togolese target man as we took to the battle field against West Ham.
Wenger's decision appeared as it might backfire as the Gunners struggled to get the break through they deserved. However the introduction of Ade with barely 25 minutes to go and was inspired.
The substitution worked on two levels, the first being bringing on a vital player at a vital time in the game to help secure a vital three points. But most importantly with Ade riding the pine for most of the game it seemed to shake him out of his funk.
The talisman looked sharp, willing to run his arse off (he even managed to stay onside) and at last, he looked interested in the game. It's precisely what the team needed ..... especially with the Spuds coming over for tea on Wednesday (he loves to score against them).
Let hope that this kick up the bum will serve him well for the rest of the season.
And who says Arsene can't be ruthless.
