'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Keane Joins The Arsenal - United Lovefest

What a difference a few years makes.

It wasn't that long ago that Sir Alex Ferguson got covered in pizza (seriously, I still wonder where the pizza came from) in the players tunnel at Old Trafford, it wasn't a life time ago that Roy Keane and Paddy Vieira went toe to toe as the players waited to come out on to the pitch at Highbury, and the image is still in mind of Martin Keown hassling Ruud van Nistlerooy after his penalty miss in the dramatic nil-niller in our unbeaten season.

But despite all the hostilities, there now seems to be a Arsenal - United love-in.

Not only were there NOT any mind games leading up to the match at the Grove yesterday, but rumour has it that Fergie and Le Boss sat down for a cup of Earl Grey prior to kick off.

After the game the two gaffers were extremely complimentary of each others teams.

Roy Keane has also looked to get in on the smoochfest by jumping to the defence of the Arsenal manager after the pundits and media of England have given him a rough ride over the last ten days.

In a rant that had me nodding my head in agreement, I found myself harbouring a whole new respect for Keane and one of the most astute and, let's face, correct interviews you're ever likely to read.

'I was asked by ITV to do the Celtic versus Manchester United game but I've done it once for Sky and never again,' Keane said. 'I'd rather go to the dentist.

'You're sitting there with people like Richard Keys and they're trying to sell something that's not there.'

'Anytime I watch a game on television, I have to turn the commentators off. They say 'he's playing well' and I'm thinking 'no, he's not'. My advice to anyone is don't listen to the experts, Just watch the game and gather your own opinions.'

'There was a debate about Wenger on Sky and how crazy is that? People are actually getting interviewed saying he shouldn't be doing this.

'What that man's done for English football is amazing and will be remembered in 25, 50, 100 years' time. Will those on telly yesterday be remembered for what they've achieved? None whatsoever.

'I wouldn't trust them to walk my dog. There are ex-players and ex-referees being given air-time who I wouldn't listen to in a pub. OK, there will be one or two who've done something in the game whose opinion you would take on board, but I'm on about every Tom, Dick and Harry.'

I'm not sure how comfortable I feel having respectful feelings for these two people who have caused me to almost burst a blood vessel in the past ..... but it is what it is.

Well he is spot on. The plonkers on Sky and Setanta and Motd are useless. The likes of Andy Soak Gray,Tim I am Stupid Sherwood and Alan Thug all Shearer are biased and predicatable. Good on Keane.

Graeme Sounness is about the only one worth his salt in my opinion. He always tells it as he sees it, and doesn't agree with those ****s Redknapp and Keyes just for the sake of it. Ruud Gullit is laughable, despite being a bloody good player he seems to absoluetely nothing about football. lol

The above link I think is the most direct representation of the interview. Brilliant stuff, you can almost feel the indignation, and disbelief in the words when he's talking about Arsene getting criticism
Gunnerman
AMEN!!!!

lol phew, so it's not just me who finds Keane respectable as a person now. And Mad, can I also add Richard Keys, Hansen and Lawro to that list please?
GoonerLou
I think Richard Keyes is right at the top of the list Lou. He is one pundit that has never had anything to do with the game outside of punditry and it just so happens that he's the biggest moron out there. Geoff Shreeves isn't much better, the most inflamatory pundit out there. "So Arsene, you have recieved much criticism from the Arsenal fans over the last ten days, will you take great care in ramming that criticism right back down their throats" .... grade A tosser.
Rocky7
lol yeah saw that post-match video on Skysports.com. Now I'm watching a Sky equivalent here, and one of the Hansen equivalents commented after Spurs beat 9-man Man City, "Redknapp's Spurs have stay unbeaten, and they've climbed out of the relegation zone. Maybe we should start calling him Harry Potter, it's like magic!" So these morons are everywhere you see!
GoonerLou
The best Geoff Shreeves quote recently was when he was interviewing Jamie Carragher agter Liverpool beat Chelsea for the first time in ages in the league: "Thats as good as a trophy in itself, isn't it?" and Jamie replied "No, I don't think so" Tosser.

Agree with everything Keane says. I'm still trying to get used to the bonhomie between Wenger and Fergie - quite unnerving initially, but now its actually good to see. Grizzled veterans who respect each others' contributions to the game.
prits
lol Tomf, if he asked Spurs the same question after drawing us, they probably would've answered "Yes"...
GoonerLou
Tom - That quote from Carragher would have been so much funnier had the quotation marks had been moved one word to the right!! lol
Rocky7
The one I hate the most is J Redknapp slimy little c***.

Keane is absolutely spot on. Me and my friends were discussing the disolution of some of our rivalry with United, many say its because certain players aren't around but I don't entirely agree. I think since Chelsea have come along and just bought success, while Ferguson and Wenger built empires up from the ground and indellibly stamped their personalities on their football clubs. I think since Chelsea have come along, Ferguson and Wenger have forged a newfound mutual respect. Even Fergie said post match, "if you're gonna lose, lose to a team that plays football."
Little Dutch
Well LD Sir also said earlier that if ManU couldn't win the title, he'd rather Arsenal win it than anyone else. He's developing a soft spot for us lol. If I look at it from a cynical perspective though, Sir Old Fox knows our young team has a bit of a complacency issue and he knew this mind game wouldn't work with older heads at Chelsea so he kept praising us?! lol
GoonerLou
Maybe he is trying to demonstrate that he is a matured, professional manager. Some1 to be taken serious of with that support.
nevidimka
Nice speech there Roy and absolutely spot-on. It beggars belief the way those pundits whine about managers under pressure within too short a time AND THEN SPARK A FEEDING FRENZY on our manager of 12 years, who alongside Ferguson, are the major contributors to the prestige of the EPL!End of the Wenger era after 2 iffy league games- my arse!!!
julieloveshenry4ever
I would like Keane to replace Wenger when the time does come. Noone will dare play half-assed for Roy.
Will-i-am10
Well noone will dare play half-arsed for Big Tone either. And btw, am I the only one who's half-hoping Sunderland will stay up? I think he and the team deserve it.
GoonerLou
I couldnt agree more. I also (strangely) find ex gooners make the best pundits. Merson Alan Smith Lee Dixon all seem decent. Cannot understand for the life in me what people like Jason Cundy and Perry Groves are doing on the telly. And the less said about Lawro the better
HuddersfieldYiddo
Huddersfield - You don't even have to mention the collection of c***s at BBC's MOTD we all know what they really are..... But how in the name of god did Jason Cundy get on the television????
LondonGooner
Merson is a pile of cock turd. Charlie Nicholas and lee Dixon are the best on telly and Stewart Robson is the best around.
Tom14
I think Merse is ok, nothing special but not as bad as some. He speaks as an Arsenal fan and voices his genuine opinions. Smudger knows his football but is the Nigel Mansell of the sport .... man is he boring!!
Rocky7
I think in terms of ex-Gunners, Stewart Robson, Lee Dixon, Martin Keown and Nigel Winterburn are the good ones. Perry Groves and Paul Merson would suit the ATV stuff as ex-players/fans better. Charlie Nicholas and Alan Smith are okay. I personally don't mind reading Merse's critical stuff on Skysports.com either cos he's just being honest and honestly worried as a Gooner, the same way Lee Dixon was critical of Arsenal on the Beeb, fair enough.
GoonerLou
Ah forgot to add - the only one I think is UNfair enough is Ian Wright. Anyone who writes for the Sun is a proper idiot - Cesc included recently, sorry.
GoonerLou
Ian Wrigth is a to**er who should really keep his "written for him" opinions off the pages of crappy tabloids and be thankful that the supposrters took him to their hearts instead of coating the club every time he opens his fat gob!
