Seriously, Please Stop Talking

Just like Tottenham fans, it seems some Arsenal players don't know when to stop talking and let their actions speak for themselves.

In discussions over at Vital Chelsea before the game this weekend, talk turned to players making ill-advised comments in the press prior to football matches. It was then I predicted that should we emerge victorious from Stamford Bridge that one of three Arsenal players (van Persie, Fabregas or Adebayor) would issues comments talking about the re-ignition of our title charge.

Of course, it was Adeabyor who proved me correct.

The lanky Togan said, 'Winning means everybody can say we are keeping our title dreams alive but the main thing is to keep going. Maybe we have a little bit more concentration for the big teams and that is something we are going to work on very hard. We all believe in the boss. He is here to help us and we are here to help the fans.'

Whilst Ade's comments also looked at the need for focus and concentration against the 'lesser' teams (and I guess his spirit and belief should be admired) it just irks me somewhat to hear players talking about our title chances whilst we are still in the midst of such inconsistency.

Had these comments come on the back of a 5 match winning streak then I could understand it, but I would have thought that making similar statements after beating Man Utd earlier this month and then slumping to 2 consecutive defeats, conceding 5 goals and scoring precisely none, would have taught us a thing or two about humility.

Please, let's just forget about the league title for now, and concentrate on beating Wigan and we'll see where it goes from there.

To be fair he does only talk about title 'dreams'.

I mentioned this in a thread the other day (decorated with tons of swearing and annoyance) as I had the right hump with our big mouthed players who can never seem to keep their traps shut. Gallas, Adepaymemore, RVP and Cesc love the sound of their own voices and everytime they open them they end up looking like boring prats. They get paid for football not public speaking and it should stay that way!

I have no problems with them speaking in public .... but they need to focus. I see little point in talking about focusing on playing well against smaller team and then immediately talking up our title chances. Let's just beat Wigan first, because if we fail to do that then this brilliant win over Chelsea will have been for naught.

Mate, I think they all need to be gagged. They have usually nothing of interest to say, it is always cliche's and platitudes. They are frankly boring people with little in the way of personality and the only reason I even know their names is because they are footballers. LOL It is just so predictable and dull when they talk, can't help not liking all that malarky Rock!

I would have put the headline as 'shut the ***** up' ! Of course, thats why Rocky is the editor ;). I'm tired of all the talk, just pls focus on the football and try to win against Wigan which will be a start. Dont these fellas learn? After the ManU game, we heard more of the same, which was promptly followed by 2 defeats.

Whilst I agree with your general point, maybe you should read the whole of his comment in context before you jump on the player. The media has a habit of writing provocative headlines supported by selective quotes to give a certain 'spin' on what players say.

Context please Rocky- was the question posed to him, "Do you think you still have a shot at the league title?" If so, his comments seem pretty innocuous to me.

Surely the players are only answering questions put to them. Isn't being open to the public part of their job in giving their views. I'd rather have them talk positive than be negative.

The comments were taken from the Official website so I'm pretty sure there was no spin involved. Also if someone asks if we have a shot of the title he should really be thinking along the lines of "we should take each game as it comes" it's a cliche but it really is how we should be thinking given our current form.

But they are young footballers, they're probably not the brightest bunch plus the language barrier, think you're being a tad too harsh. Tony Adams, Ray Parlour, Ian Wright and Paul Merson are retired footballers and not one of them can put a sentence together of any meaning.

Adebayor speaks perfect English (if not a little too fast) as do van Persie and Cesc. And if they really can't put a sentence together (though I feel you're doing them a bit of a diservice, how many languages do you speak?) then they shouldn't be speaking with the media at all.

And the rest of his quote: "It was a very good win," he said. "We needed character and we went through a very difficult moment and people wrote us off in the Premier League but the message we have sent out is that we have a good team. "We have always been together and we have forgotten what happened before. We always believe that we can do something and that is what we tried to show today." "If we had lost we would have never said the title race was over for us," he said. "We had to keep on going until the end of the season. We know we have a great team and a great squad and we are ready for it." I still don't see what is wrong with these comments. It's on the official site, no spin, just encouraging words for the supporters. There is no bravado, no saying they are going to win anything, no slagging of other teams or players. They are allowed to speak last time I looked.

They get Media training at Arsenal nowadays.

And all that is fair enough, but why does he feel the need to talk about title dreams? We're still a fair way off and going by previous game we don't even know if we can follow up the great result with a win at home to Wigan. That, in my opinion, is not the air of confidence you get from a title challenging team. Let's get back on track before we even mention challenging for the league.

Of course they get media training but do you really think what was said is worthy of critism. Can't see why we are even discussing it.

Then why comment? I personally, from my own personal point of view, think it's wrong to even think about talking up our title chances considering we have played more **** football this season than good. Which is why I commented.

There's no agression bud! None at all. I just find it strange that someone who doesn't deem the subject worthy of discussion one way or the other would comment. Maybe I could have worded it nicer but my point is still the same. Apologies.

I do see your point, I'd rather the press forget about us and talk up Liverpool, Man Utd & Chelsea all the time so we get kept out the limelight to take a bit of pressure off. Maybe we can sneak up on the rails later in the season; now that would be some feat after losing 5 games by November. The other 3 have their failabilities too so you never know. Keep the faith.

We've always been at our best when we're the underdogs for some unknown reason ..... and it would be nice to keep it that way .... at least until we're in a position to actually talk about the title. If we can win the majoity of our games between now and the transfer window, we'll be n with a shot ... but that's a massive if .... and it starts on Saturday.

Exactly, we need to stay out of the limelight and comments like this arent helping. The squad should not hear about title ambitions, they should just knuckle down to getting 3 pts against Wigan. Comments like this dont help.

I agree that our players are better off underplaying our chances of winning anything, but Adebayor's comments this time don't come across as cocky or arrogant as some of his or Cesc's recent comments. I think he is slowly learning to show a bit of humility.

J: So, Emanuel, congratulations on your win against Chelsea. Do you think this victory puts you back in the title race. EA: *silence* J: Er.... ok, beating Chelsea at Stamford bridge is a great achievement, do you think that you have addressed some of your recent criticisms? EA; *silence* J: ...right...ummmm, Do you feel you've sent out a positive messsage to the fans, and to your closest rivals? EA: *silence* J: Well... er... back to the studio, please. Ea: Thankyou. It would be nice, but it's a little unrealistic to expect players of any club to remain mute during interviews.

I don't believe anyone wanted them to stay mute, that would be stupid to even suggest that wouldn't it......................! The fact is, do we need a daily interview with Adepaymemore going on about how we can win the title or that other teams are running scared. That is truly stupid.

Ade is very effective in his own unique way, that much is true depending on what partnerships we play. Soemone like Benzema would play well off Ade but doesn't finish aswell as Eduardo. I spose we will have to wait and see how the lad responds to his horrific injury and whether he can get back to his pre Birmingham form. Still haven't seen anyone break Taylors leg yet, shame that!

Though in all honesty i regularly check footie boards literally every day & one thing that has struck me is that since the summer before the season had started Its as if your player Adebayour has given an interview literally once a week , no other player of any other club has come close to the amount of regular interviews that this guy has given from what ive noticed since the begining of preseason. I have to admit though its been quite funny because every time Adebayour gives an interview Arsenal seem to draw when they should win or lose. LOL does Adebayoour have a special deal tied up with the media or something?..I just hope he gives a nice sweet long Interview a few days before we play you guys later this month. Liverpool fan.
