Le Boss hasn't seen anything he wants to buy

Despite telling everyone last week that he wouldn`t be drawn into answering questions on January transfer targets Wenger was tempted to dampen some gooners expectations of a gift or two in the New Year.

At last Fridays press conference he told those in attendance asking about January transfer prospects "I won't answer that question. If I say yes and I don't do it people will ask why I haven't done it. If I say no and we lose one game people will say I am crazy because I didn't want to buy. In England every problem is sorted out by buying a player when you lose a football game."

Today he tells us, via an interview on Arsenal TV Online, that so far he hasn`t found a player special enough to be worth a place in the Arsenal squad. In the interview he says "I cannot say something will happen, but you never know. It is feasible that we can do it and sometimes a [new] player can give some extra belief to the squad.

"If it appears we can make something special, then we will do it - but at the moment I can sincerely say we have not seen anything special that can really convince us we will be much stronger."

Wenger has at least been consistent in declaring his belief that the current squad has great potential for further development.

"At the moment, I am more [keen] to develop the team we have. When you look at our players, most of them are under 21 and there is a lot to come from them.

"We have gone with a policy we respect and the solution is not always when you do not get the result you want to just go out and buy. That can destroy what you have built up until now" he explains.

Returning to his recent theme calling for more belief and support from fans he continued "We do not reject it, but we cannot also say that for certain it will be done. We have a young team with the Club in good shape, a healthy financial position, which suddenly is quite important.

"That is why what you want with a young team is for your fans to be behind [the team] and give them something extra that a team needs."

Wenger has frequently produced surprises in his transfer dealings though those surprises can simply be that there aren`t any transfers! Given the current febrile atmosphere of gooner fans consensus for more transfer spending this current slight dampening of spirits might not help the festive mood amongst some supporters. It should make for an entertaining message board though.

Arsene must realy scrutanize players. There has to be special players out there will add to Arsenal. I think Arsenes words are to keep building the morake of the current squad by not saying we need this and that player.

I would have less of a problem with Arsene making statements like that if he did not have the likes of Eboue & Song in his starting line up, very frustrating!!

Not really worth over analysing Wenger's comments with regards to the transfer market. He always comes out with these vague statements, this comment could have been cut and pasted from any time during his tenure. Let's just wait and see what happens. One thing is for clear, if January comes and goes and no significant moves have been made, he can expect a backlash that wouldn't be entirely unreasonable.

My gut feeling tells me that he's not going to sign anyone, particularly in their prime. If anything, it will be a Silvestre like signing or a teenager. He won't sign a centre midfielder because that will block the paths of Diaby, Song, Denilson, Ramsey and Coquelin. He's unlikely to sign a top-class central defender coz it will hinder the development of Nordveit. How can he say there's nothing out there that can improve our squad?? It seems like for Arsenal FC, success is just getting into the Champions League.

I honestly can't see there being any significant movement? If I were to have a huge flutter it'd be on Gallas out and a non CL-tied CB coming in, that's it.
18/12/2008 15:22:00
Vin - been saying that for a while mate, it's more like Arsenal PLC not Arsenal FC.
18/12/2008 15:23:00
At least it's entertaining. We all know Wenger could come up with anything - including nothing! It makes all the speculation even more fevered.
18/12/2008 15:47:00
I think he will sign someone seeing how the team has been troubled by injuries, he must see the need for a winger of some sort. He made comments saying he would buy before the season and that kinda backfired on him so I thnk he is wary of promising anything. Gooner Vin, I dont think that is Arsenals ambition (CL) but I do think Arsene is trying to bring things to a point that once the team has matured they will be on top for years to come. Its a very smart thing to do but it depends mostly on patience which most of us dont have. I for one can see us doing a lot of damage "if" we can get and stay healthy. We have some brilliant players, we really do!

Really, havent we all heard enough of Wenger's transfer talk to know that its baloney ?! He rarely does anything that he says, so I wouldnt really pay much attention to it. This team still has games to play before any transfer business can be done. So it will be counter-productive for Wenger to say that it needs improvement. Lets just wait and watch what he actually does.
