Despite telling everyone last week that he wouldn`t be drawn into answering questions on January transfer targets Wenger was tempted to dampen some gooners expectations of a gift or two in the New Year.
At last Fridays press conference he told those in attendance asking about January transfer prospects "I won't answer that question. If I say yes and I don't do it people will ask why I haven't done it. If I say no and we lose one game people will say I am crazy because I didn't want to buy. In England every problem is sorted out by buying a player when you lose a football game."
Today he tells us, via an interview on Arsenal TV Online, that so far he hasn`t found a player special enough to be worth a place in the Arsenal squad. In the interview he says "I cannot say something will happen, but you never know. It is feasible that we can do it and sometimes a [new] player can give some extra belief to the squad.
"If it appears we can make something special, then we will do it - but at the moment I can sincerely say we have not seen anything special that can really convince us we will be much stronger."
Wenger has at least been consistent in declaring his belief that the current squad has great potential for further development.
"At the moment, I am more [keen] to develop the team we have. When you look at our players, most of them are under 21 and there is a lot to come from them.
"We have gone with a policy we respect and the solution is not always when you do not get the result you want to just go out and buy. That can destroy what you have built up until now" he explains.
Returning to his recent theme calling for more belief and support from fans he continued "We do not reject it, but we cannot also say that for certain it will be done. We have a young team with the Club in good shape, a healthy financial position, which suddenly is quite important.
"That is why what you want with a young team is for your fans to be behind [the team] and give them something extra that a team needs."
Wenger has frequently produced surprises in his transfer dealings though those surprises can simply be that there aren`t any transfers! Given the current febrile atmosphere of gooner fans consensus for more transfer spending this current slight dampening of spirits might not help the festive mood amongst some supporters. It should make for an entertaining message board though.
