Wenger Plans New Year Transfers

Those Arsenal fans concerned that Arsene Wenger might not look to fix our obvious problems this transfer window will be pleased to know that Wenger is already on the prowl.

Arsene Wenger has identified the midfield area as the area most in need of repair.

Speaking in his programme notes ahead of the victory over Portsmouth yesterday and also on French channel 'Canal Plus' Wenger spoke of his plans.

'The transfer window opens (on Thursday) and, although we are not close to signing anyone at the moment, if we do buy I think what we need is maybe someone with a bit of experience,'

'We already have many young players so, if we buy, it will be somebody who is ready to play straight away. A loan deal could also be a possibility.'

'Cesc is a long way from playing again, so are Tomas Rosicky and Theo Walcott, and these are three creative players that we count on at the start of the season. So what we might need is someone who can create a little spark.'

'I don't need to announce a name, because when you do that there is 50 per cent less chance of making the signing. But I need a creative midfielder and eventually another midfielder, because we are short.'

So rest assured, Wenger DOES see what we see, and we've now got a nice Premier League break for him to fix it.

Those Wenger comments stink of an imminent signing. I think (probably more of a hope) that Wenger is trying to throw others off the scent a little bit. If he's so close to a signing he wants others to think he still browsing rather than waiting at the checkout so we don't get any queue jumpers. I firmly believe we'll have at least a couple of players in place for our next league match.
Rocky7
I think it will be a bit short for our next match. But hopefully the new guy(s) can contribute directly to our CL match VS Roma.
stukazufuss
I'm guessing (and only guessing) that maybe the player(s) he brings in might not be able to play in the CL!!
Rocky7
Perhaps it can also be a statement of intent from our new incoming Chief Executive who begins his post on 1 Jan.
Gooner_Vin
So we could end up with Arshavin and a top class defensive midfielder. My worries would be almost over!
Tom14
Yeah almost Tom. I reckon those two would see us through to the CL again next season. A defender and keeper woud be nice too, but I reckon a winger and denfensive midfielder are paramount.
Rocky7
hopefully a centre back will come in aswell and i got a feeling kolo toure and maybe robin van persie may leave i think rvp had a bust up with wenger b4 arsenal pompey (hopefully not) hes our best player aside from cesc
Arsenal_1_Best
Probably Arshavin and Alonso to come in. Nobody should be sold until the summer, I have a feeling Senderos will come back from Milan aswell.
iceman10
Iceman - I reckon I'd spurt if that happened. A central midfield (eventually) of Arshavin - Alonso - Cesc - Nasri would have many people drooling.
Rocky7
Im no PG but thats what ive heard from my grannys, uncles, sons, brothers, aunties, godsons mum ;)
iceman10
LOL - I dunno Icey, that sounds like a more reliable source to me!!! Alonso would be great imo. He's a great interceptor but he's also got an uncanny eye for a long pass, not to mention scores for fun from the halfway ine ... lol
Rocky7
just watch this space or refresh newsnow every 5 minutes!
iceman10
It'll be very difficult to get any good players in this window. I'm however hearing a lot about Inler and Arshavin. Wenger will probably go for an unheard of French player who does start for a team in Ligue Un.
ForeverUnited
ForeverUnited is right, it is difficult to get good player in during the January window generally speaking. However, it is well known that Arshavin has been trying to get out of Russia and play here or in Spain for awhile now so there are exceptions. And yes Rocky that Arshavin - Alonso - Cesc - Nasri midfield would be wonderful.
TPowell
Is this really Wenger's words? A real break from his traditional obtuse transfer talk. I normally ignore his words, prefer to judge him on action, but this is a pleasant surprise. Talk of a loan deal might be the best, since we need short term fixes. Elano sounds more likely now.
prits
I don't want to go on and on about it, but Alonso is far from what we need. He is a class player but it would be pretty pointless considering he is more like Fabregas than Flamini. We need a tough nut, not a deep-lying playmaker. As for Elano, god no! Steven Ireland would be ten times better. Arsenal_1_Best, that is a bit silly isn't it? van Persie was left out because he was tired and possibly not one for the big center half game. But Toure looks likely to leave if we were to bring in a big center half. Man City are interested we hear, 15 mil?
Tom14
Alonso isnt the terrier type we would prefer but he knows the league, he is experienced on the world stage and he is better than what we have right now.
iceman10
alonso is definately a class act and is playing the football of his life at the moment at liverpool. even if rafa wants to offload him during the window, the fans would strictly forbid it. the liverpool fans have a big say in what the club movement are, as shown already last year in the speculation of rafa.
chopstah
He is better than what we have but that does not make him the best option.
Tom14
He's one of the best options. As with Gilberto he reads the game incredibly well. You don't always need a tough nut to succeed. However it's looking increasingly unlikely with Gerrard still in prison ..... lol
Rocky7
I doubt Alonso would leave a Liverpool team that is going for the PL. I wonder if Arsene will swoop for Alex at Chelsea who has stated his desire to leave them in the January window. I wouldn't mind Tim Cahill or Arteta from Everton; Barry from Villa would be a great double whammy!
Gooner_Vin
Alex is pants. He is not good enough compared to many players we could sign. And again, with Alonso, he is still not what we need. Have you ever seen Alonso play the holding midfield role? Ever? He always plays alongside a terrier like Mascherano or Senna. Yes, he would be great alongside Fabregas in an attacking sense, but he is not as great as you seem to think at playing the Gilberto role. All of my Liverpool supporting friends and family think he has been Liverpool's best player, but concerning the Arsenal transfer they feel that it would not be a good move for us. Scott Parker would be more suitable. Inler, De Jong, Reo Coker and many others.
Tom14
Yeah I've seen him do it a lot of times Tom. I think after six months of disagreement on this we will just have to agree to disagree.
Rocky7
IM sick of hearing all this talk about arshavin ... he has played in a league that has made him look a much better player then he was ... as did pavlyuchenko ... also arshavin is 27 years old ... why would we want to pay 20+ million for him? we are never going to recieve that money back ... arsene wenger is far to clever to sign this player ...
Achilles
Or how about we dont worry about making our money back on a player for once? No doubt Arshavin would be a gamble but sometimes in football you have to take a chance on a player.
iceman10
I just cannot understand why anyone would even consider him as an answer to our problem at the moment. Great player bla bla bla, but he is no holding midfielder. We would have to restrict Fabregas once again were we to sign Alonso or play Song alongside him just so that we have a defensive midfielder. Alonso does not have many of the required attributes that we need.
Tom14
one of my mates working n living london told me of this bizzar transfer rumour which is too good to be true. i dun know who is sources are but he claims from a very good source that Wenger is considering making a move for Kaka. now i dun know how true this is, but he tells me

one of my mates working n living london told me of this bizzar transfer rumour which is too good to be true. i dun know who is sources are but he claims from a very good source that Wenger is considering making a move for Kaka. now i dun know how true this is, but he tells me that Arsene sees Kaka as a short term replacement for Kaka & a long term replacement for Hleb. i dun know whether to believe him or no cuz he is the same guy who told me we were going to sign Anelka last season, which he still claims was a done deal, but one thing that i do know is that if Kaka comes, a lot of our problems in midfield and attack will be solved very quickly..
luckys_10
short term replacement for Cesc*
luckys_10
why dont you go and ask leeds about taking chances, spending money like a maniac and what happens iceman?
Achilles
One of my mates told me that because I have big feet I must have a large penis...
Tom14
my mates uncle barry's aunt shila's brothers best m8's grandads best m8's, sons, wife's, brother's girlfriend's knock off said that he is good friends with pat rice and said that we are in talks with man utd for a deal worth around 85 million for ronaldo ...
Achilles
Leeds were spending money on credit Arsene has money in the bank and thats a fact. You want us to buy players who have a sell on value? thats ambitious, are we spurs?
iceman10
Anyone that really believes that XabiAlonso will transfer to Arsenal in January is just kidding themselves. Alonso said he doesn't want to leave, Benitez has said he no longer wants to sell, Benitez was only selling to buy Gareth Barry anyway (who he no longer wants) and he's in a team at the top of the league, why would he want to move to a team struggling for fourth? That is also ignoring that Alonso isn't really the player Arsenal need, and that Wenger is unlikely to spend that much one one player anyway (he's never done it in the past, the record transfer is still Wiltord). With that out the way, it's much more likely he'll move for someone like Yaya Toure or Gokhan Inler.
SuspectPackage
my friend's dad, said that his brother's neighbour's wife told him that wenger told in confidence to his milkman's son in law that he is planning to get either niko krancjar, morten gamst pedersen, or carlos villaneuva on loan.
supersof
Thank God you have unreliable sources mate. Thank God!
Tom14
think about what your saying about iceman ... we have a team full of youngsters waiting to come thru we need someone cheap and cheerful to come thru and just fill the slots for a while ... we dont need to spend 20 million on a 27 year old player who has only played in the russian leagues .... i dare not even think what his wage demands would be ....
Achilles
You think about what your saying. You want players who only have a sell on value? what kind of ambition is that? Your comparing us to Leeds UTD? If Wenger listened to you our record signing wouldnt have notched the winner at OT in 2002 because his sell on value was sweet FA. On what part of this thread have I said I want to spend 20m on Arshavin? I want Wenger to spend whatever it takes within our budget to get us eating at the top table again, he's done it before and he will do it again. The way you talk its as if were skint and Wenger has never spent money on decent players.
iceman10
And as for wages ours are the 3rd highest in the premiership for a bunch of players who havent achieved anything in the game. surely thats as bad as paying a 27 year old Russian a kings ransom?
iceman10
why are you turning this into an arguement? lol i believe my comments are correct ... what im trying to say is why would we want to spend 20 plus million on arshavin when we could spend much less on a younger more premiership proven player? agree?
Achilles
Ive clearly staed my preference is Arteta on other threads. But I believe to say we shouldnt sign players based on sell on value is wrong.
iceman10
There's a massive, massive middle ground between Leeds and Wenger with regards transfer policy. In fact, they are probably at the extremes of the spectrum, there is plenty of middle ground for Wenger to plunder. A frugal transfer policy is sensible, but I don't believe we don't have the money for one quality player. Arshavin or otherwise.
Little Dutch
I may be overly sceptical, but I sincerely doubt that we will bring in Alonso or Arshavin. In fact, I suspect that Wenger will make some signings perhaps in the Sagna or Eduardo mould. Not known all around Europe, but a bit of a local hero. Perhaps Inler? He looks pretty decent from the little I've seen.
ArsenalRob
Arteta and Inler for me.
Tom14
The thing with Arshavin is he will go for a lot less than 20M. In the summer, Zenit set the rules, but now they HAVE to sell him, coz his attitude for them stinks at the moment. So Arsenal can negotiate a sweet deal for him, perhaps in the 12-15M range. He's also willing to cut down his wage demands. In the end, Wenger might go for Arteta+Arshavin, coz both those could end up costing 25M, which I believe Arsenal can afford. As for DM, Wenger might well decide to cope with Song & Denilson till the end of this season.
prits
I doubt you fellows will spend 20 million. You'll probably pluck some french or african player out of thin air, and make him a world class player!
JT_daniel
100 percent agree with both JT and rob
