Vela: Arsenal's True Match Winner Today

For a good sixty minutes, Arsenal were very, very poor in their play, but once a certain young Mexican striker was introduced to the left wing, Arsenal actually looked like they could win the match. Our first goal scoring chance came immediately after Carlos Vela was introduced, and then we proceeded to go on and create more. His style of play is what this team is in dire need of, and the changing of Diaby for Carlos highlighted this point. Diaby was abysmal in his passing, and he never looked to attack the stingy Bolton defense at any sort of pace. When Vela came in, he looked right away to challenge an inexperienced right back, Chris Basham. Why we never looked to cash in on his inexperience in the first 60 minutes is beyond me.

I give my congratulations to Bendtner, who was successful in brushing off a destitute first few minutes on the pitch, but I maintain that if Vela was not introduced when and where he was, then we would still be looking at a 5 point gap between us and Aston Villa. Well done Vela!

Change to most recent first
Nasri in the middle alongside Denilson with Arshavin on the wing with either Vela or Eboue on the other (left/right side) is the way forward for us this season. I would also like to see a central defender signed because I am still unsure of Djourou and Toure. But it is not vital.

I agree with Tom with regard to the midfield, but I have to say our better defensive performances this year have come with Djourou in the side.

I agree, but I am still not sure that he is the guy that will deal with everything thrown at us.

He's good in the air though. With his strength and Toure's pace, they could be a good partnership in time.

Speaking purely on form, I wouldn't mind starting with Vela on the left now, Nasri in the middle alongside Den, Eboue on the right, Diaby either in the hole when we play with one striker or on the bench when we have two strikers. Bottomline, I'd rather start Carlos than Diaby (he hasn't been good except when he's in the hole, where Nasri also shines though).

Id do that too Lou, but Arshavin would be in the side of course.

You could really see Arshaving making a big impact on this side. We're in dire need of something different creatively and someone who can be direct (with skill). For me, Nasri is wasted on the wing and he has to start playing more centrally, certainly in Cesc's absence.

The big question is - can we play with Vela and Arshavin on the wings or does Eboue have to play on one, thus playing Arshavin on the left. That is if we sign Arshavin!

Vela will probably be more of a striker because of his awesome finishing ability. We used to play with a midfield of Rosicky-Cesc-Flamini-Hleb - so three quite attack-minded players. i guess we could play with Vela/Arshavin/Nasri/Walcott on the wings but we'd need a Flamini/Gilberto type midfielder alongside.

Thats what Denilson is. Hleb and Rosicky are more defensive than Arshavin or Vela so the problem would be there, not in the middle. Den is doing a perfectly fine job that is comparable to Gilberto or Flamini.

Wholly agree with this article, Vela made the difference. With Diaby the defence could sit back a little and if he made a good move he held the ball too long and got it taken away. Vela stretched the Bolton defence and we shouldve scored more. More playing time for him please. Please Ade be more focused in front of goal and dont wait for the defence to come - less talking and more scoring please.

It was a combination of various things. There was this one beautfiful through ball from Nasri to Ade (which he should have scored from), when Nasri had moved to the centre where he actually looks more effective. I do agree that vela made a positive difference, but its still doubtful whether he should start there. I still dont know how much defensive work he is capable of doing. We might be one goal down if he starts on the wings. We shouldnt simply jump on a bandwagon based on 30 mins of very good play. I should say Diaby disappointed me a little while Denilson was his normall industrial self.

I would actually like to see Vela up front if we sign Arshavin rather than Adebayor for a few games.

And special mention to Bendtner. The ******** idiots in the crowd were getting on his back for ONE misplaced pass, just ONE. The ironic jeering after he made a simple 5 yard pass *****ed me off proper. You could see a marginal hesitation from him after that. That he continues to take this ***** and still produce goals for us (its now 2 in 2 games for him) is very good. The lad is mentally tough. But how long will this crowd continue to be counter-productive to this team?

Prits took the words right out of my mouth. Vela will be like Theo on the wings (probably, could be wrong though) in that he will be a complete defensive liability. I think it was more important that Nasri moved to the center than that Vela came on. Although I feel that he could be an 'impact sub' if he came on to play as a winger when we are struggling.

just give me 17 more 1-0 victories and i'll be fine. dun care about how we play now, it's all about the points. we played so well vs the spuds and away at villa and got just 2 points from those games. im just wondering how different the league table would be now if we would have won those two games. we'd be right up there. but it's still not over, 17 more 1-0 wins and we'll be champions ;)

what worries me is that the luck seems to be with Villa every week .. 5 own goals in their last 6 wins in the league ,4 of them won by 1 goal. Thats an incredible run .. cant continue .. can it?

I'm hoping that Villa will slip up, at some point. They are due a few injuries, a few bad lucks, a few poor ref decisions. Hopefully, with this neat run we're putting up right now, we will be in a position to take advantage of that when it happens.

Starting a game and impacting as a sub are two different things, Bendtner neatly illustrated that today after some listless performances when he is on from the start. Vela was a good option to change our style slightly and be a bit more direct, but had he started it's likely Bolton would have had a contingency plan for him and kept him under wraps. But bringing on a pacy winger to take on tired defenders is a good option, starting with one as young as Vela is a different kettle of fish. He's o.k. as an impact sub at the moment.

not too concerned about Villa. i won't be suprised if Everton beat them to 5th spot. we just have to go on now every week and take every game as a cup final. we have quite a few tough away fixtures coming up in the league, so it's vital to come out with maximum points from it, nevermind the performances..

That's a good point LD - overlooked by those considering individual performances. Vela brought a change to 4-3-3 from 4-4-1-1. Bendtner a change to 4-2-4. Either of these changes used from the start would probably not have had the same effect against a fresh side.

Vela was definitely a bright spark, but not just because he was fresh - Diaby was so rubbish that any replacement was bound to do better. Eboue was just as nervous/rubbish yesterday.

Vela isn't ready yet for ninety minutes and coming on as a sub is probably the best way to use him at the moment. I would like to see Nasri start in central midfield alongside Denilson who continues to mature and improve in an impressive fashion. I think RVP should get a mention, he is just about back to his best - maybe better than before - he even uses his right foot now. I thought Robin was brilliant today, he worked hard and helped set-up the goal. Bendtner did well to and took his chance well, he may make it yet as a top player. Diaby continues to worry me; flashes of brilliance but plenty of misplaced passes, confusion and mediocrity. The defence also gives cause for concern and nearly cost us two points against a side who hardly threatened at all. I've said it many times - this side has got to start taking a pride in clean sheets and needs a player or two who relish defending in the way that Arsenal teams of the past have. Whilst we continue to struggle to score against teams who park the bus in front of their goal and at the same time always look likely to concede from set pieces, long balls and quick counter attacks we will win very little if anything. Having said all that a good three points today - we remain in touch with the leaders - and surely Villa's luck will run out soon?

Well done Wigan. On our defencive woes why not bring back Senderos, I know he is prone to an odd mistake but so are all our defnders we just seem to pick on and critisise him more than say Clichy or Sagna. When he filled in for Toure while he was at the Afrika cup he was on of our best players Whenger then drops him for Toure and his confidence goes an we, the fans, murdered him when he started to do mistakes. he is a confidence player and one that would give his all fore the team, much more than Ade or Gallas for example.

Hmmmmm, everything ND said except that I lost configence in Diaby a while ago, shld he still be considered a young player cos he has been in the team almost as long as Fabregas but he does not seem to be improving. I know he got injured but really at this stage in his career he shld be producing much more&a player we can rely upon CONSISTENTLY.

Diaby is just another player at Arsenal who will never be considered a first choice player. He may be a respectable substitute or a player who plays a lot of games through injuries, but he will never become a first choice player.

I bet if you put Diaby in another side he would be awesome, though. I don't know what's wrong with him, sometimes he's sublime, and the way he can move with the ball is, at times, breathtaking. But he is too prone to making the wrong decision at the end of said move. I won't give up on him just yet, but I agree, he's had a LOT of chances this season, and he's got to prove it now, while he can.
