Arshavin Wants The Shirt Off Gallas' Back

Despite Arsenal's first bid for Andrei Arshavin being rejected, the wily play-maker is already thinking about his shirt number at the club.

Arsene Wenger had been unusually coy about the signing of Arshavin, refusing to comment on the transfer despite dismissing all other rumours, indeed shortly after Zenit themselves stated negotiations were on going.

Arshavin says he would prefer the number 10 shirt that currently resides on the back of William Gallas, but knows the shirt is taken.

'I would prefer my present No.10 but in the team where I hope to move it's not vacant. So I'm ready for any number they are going to offer me,'

The Russian also hinted that he could adapt to the Gunners style quite easily after his current team performed in a similar fashion last season.

'In some games last season, we played football which was very similar to that of Arsenal'

That's true CG, but the way he's always talking about Arsenal and have never once mentioned Man City get my spidey senses tingling!!

He had just been answering questions about Arsenal Coastarian when he mentioned shirt numbers. I have it on good authority that he has no interest in joining City despite them offering the most money to Zenit. This is what is causing the hold up as Arshavin can buy out his contract for 5m if it comes to that. Arsenal know that they are in the box seat on this.

if he does come to us, gallas should give his shirt i reckon. i've always had a problem with a defender taking bergkamp's shirt. didnt someone give bergkamp the number 10 shirt when he joined?

I'm not sure Supersof - but that will never happen unless the club agree to reemburse all those who got "Gallas 10" on the back of their new shirts at the start of the season.

Hiya Rocky. My internet police seemed to have banned the site for a while. Sometimes it works, sometimes not, much like Alex Song.

I don't think there were many of those Rocky! Merson did volunteer his number 10 shirt to Bergkamp but that was in the close season, number swaps aren't permitted during the season. Basically, I'm relaxed about this, if Arshavin does go to Citeh it'll prove he isn't the type of character we want. This transfer will drag on but I'm sure it will be concluded this month, Zenit know they're not really holding any good cards here, especially if the player is that intent on joining us that he will threaten to buy out his contract. I reckon £12m and a few add ons will see this one done. Eventually.

I wonder if Gallas would makes threats of scoring an oggy if they gave Arshavin his shirt? They do say lightning never strikes twice though:) Maybe he'll just bring down Agbonlahor when we are 2 up and coasting to bring Villa back into an important game....Doh.

that wont happen, we won't play villa in the league again until next season...unless o'neill's side get relegated

I was referring to the moronic penalty he gave away at Villa Park mate. Where Agbonlahor was running out of play and our beloved captain inexplicably decided to volley him up in the air.

Arsenal with a lot of transfer activity, Chelsea with none. This is so depressing.

You dont have the funds at the moment. Apparantly Abramo has lost up to 30 percent of his wealth due to the current financial situation.

Yup, we're broke. At least it's a difficult period for the top three london clubs. Chelsea and Arsenal struggling, Q.P.R seems to be struggling too.

As I understand it Arshavins 'protected period' of the contract is only up in the summer. If he wants to buy it out he would only be in a position to do so then - not now. This transfer, if it happens, will probably drag on until the last day as Zenit hang on for the last penny. I hope we have something else up our sleeves.

That's sneaky Kevin - you deliberately overlooked the other top London club. Fulham are doing reasonably well by their standards.

I doubt very much we do, we didn't have contingency plans for the failed transfers of Alonso and Baptista (in 2004), so I can't see why we would now. Doesn't seem to be the way we roll transfer wise.

Give him any number. At the end of the year Gallas can go back to his old number of 13 and Arsharvin can have 10.

I'm pretty relaxed about this. I have a feeling that we will see Arshavin in an Arseal jersey soon enough. If he goes to Citeh, then good for us as he's not the kind of player that we want, but I do think that he will he sign for us. Only a matter of time.

Gallas should never have been given the #10 in the first place, it's ridiculous. I'm not a Gallas-basher (I'm more confident when he plays than Kolo) but I've never liked his demand for the #10 shirt when he first joined us, nor AW's easy acquiescence to that request. I don't know what the hell Gallas thinks that he can just stride into a new club and demand the one number in football that signifies all that is creative and beautiful about the sport.

In truth, Gallas did not demand the number 10, Wenger gave it to him so avoid the next incumbent being compared to Bergkamp (much the same reason Diaby wasn't given number 4 which was vacant when he arrived). Gallas refused the number 3.

There's also another great club from london. People say they'll play in the championship next season, say horrible things about the club. But I tell you this, they have enough honor and tradition to rise above the challenge, they have quality players and a top top manager.Great fans too. I'm sure Crystal Palace will play in the premier league next season.

If we do buy Arshavin, when and if ever all our midfielders are fit, i wonder how the line up will play out. cesc will probably be first choice in his position but what of the others? Nasri Denilson Cesc Rosicky/walcott. Arshavin as a striker, attacking midfielder or wide midfield? now denilson is playing well, we still need a DM?

If anything, the No. 10 shirt should have gone to Cesc or RvP or simply hung up in glorious retirement. I understand the logic of not giving the pressure of wearing a big shirt to a young player (Senderos and Theo)... Arsenal's No. 10 shirt is special, I'd like someone to really earn it and show more loyalty to the club than Arshavin, so maybe Cesc or Robin next summer (when Gallas leaves) or in the future. Arshavin can get whatever shirt number available for all I care.
