Arsenal To Offer Eboue New Contract

According to the players agent, Arsenal are set to offer Ivorian midfielder, Emmanuel Eboue a new contract as the North London outfit reject an offer from Atletico Madrid.

Franjo Vranjkovic claims the offer was rejected immediately and was followed up with a call from Wenger offering to enter into contract negotiations.

We received a few days ago an official request from Atletico Madrid which was passed to Arsenal," Vranjkovic told tuttomercatoweb.

"I have the fax from the British club`s director, Ken Friar, who wrote to me to say they are not interested in the offer and the player remains in London.'

"Then I received a call from Arsene Wenger, who invited me to go to England to start negotiations over a renewal, so I see no possibility that the player will leave Arsenal."

Many Arsenal fans (me included) believe Eboue isn't good enough to be a first team player at Arsenal, however in lean times such as these he could make a useful squad player.

i think he is a squad player, sometimes he can be fine! other times slightly dodgy! but im happy he is still here, once he is more confident he may start to show a bit more and prove the boo boys wrong!

I like him as a squad player to fill in at RB, occasionaly RM and in if injuries really hit then CM. I think he can play most of these roles to a reasonable standard. Unfortunatly he has played too many games in too many positions this season, some of them injured.

What's the betting that if the Arshavin transfer falls through, there'll be a story on on February 2nd announcing Eboue's new contract under the title "Eboue is a pass master"?

Such cynicism LD! I had much the same thoughts earlier this week when Rosicky announced that he it wouldn't be long before he is back. I could imagine an announcement at the end of the month that 'Rosicky is back in training' at the same time as the window closes without Arshavin. Eboue is a very good player - most of the time - and poor at other times. But he is just the sort of versatile player that every squad needs and a couple of notches above similar players in other squads.

"Eboue is a very good player - most of the time - and poor at other times." I think that you have that around the wrong way; he would be OK as a stand-in RB as mentioned above, but totally out of his depth as an attacking winger!

No I don't think I have it the wrong way around at all. He has more decent games than poor ones. He isn't too composed in the final third but has picked up a goal and a couple of assists in the PL this season. He is creating a reasonable number of goal attempts too. He also intercepts the ball pretty well - statistically amongst the best in the team. Compare him with players like Park Ji- Sung and James Milner for example and he comes out pretty well. He does have some poor games but there aren't many in the squad who haven't.

Eboue is a good squad player and the best thing about it is that he knows that. So having him is a good thing and if Bac is out he is a great cover for the position. He can cross the ball as good as Clichy (not a compliment at all, just a comparison) and can provide cover for a couple of other positions: RM, LB, CM. The reason why he's bad sometimes is because he lacks confidence and/or skill, not because he isn't giving 100%.

I refer to Noam Chomsky who memorably said, "if you're not cynical, it's because you're not paying attention."

Half decent right back who can cover for Sagna, not good enough for midfield. Couple of assists and one goal when he's been playing there most of the season, suppose it's no worse than Hleb. If there's one person over the Arsenal that can't afford to wrangle for a new contract, it's Eboue.

Amos, wouldn't you rather someone had a few good games than some decent ones??

I would rather we had only players who could turn on breathtakingly brilliant performances every single game - but it ain't gonna happen is it. The squad will always need some 'water carriers' as well. On that basis Eboue is a decent player.

eboue is much needed in the squad believe me. with the various competitions we go for each year, i think wenger knows the difficulty in having a versatile player who can help out when resources are low. i dont think eboue is in the first team plans, but definately as a backup. much the same as senderos in our CB.

Look, I am not going to state that Eboue is a top class footballer, but you cannot underestimate the value of players who have genuine love for the club and are willing to play in any position for the team or sit on the bench in the process. It is not his fault that Wenger has not signed a better right midfielder to play above him.

Tom, calm the hell down. Sheesh! If insults about Eboue make you so defensive and upset, I wouldn't want to be around you when someone insults Fabregas. Sorry about my cheapshot -- yes, I recognize it was a cheapshot, a joke really, I guess "taking the p***" would be about right -- tho only partly. I'm sorry but to refuse a good offer for Eboue is something I can't understand. Eboue's a player no top club wants, which is why I'm amazed a club the quality of Atletico would want him. Yes, I know that Eboue can sometimes be an adequate squad player, he sometimes offers more defensive solidity than, say, Theo (not a hard thing to do, given Theo's poor defensive abilities), that he was once a pretty good RB for us, part of a strong defense in our run to the CL final and hasn't shown that kind of consistently solid performance since. You also seem to think I approve of abusing him at the ground, something that I passionately oppose against anyone wearing an Arsenal shirt, I don't care who it is. I also know he occasionally combines well, like he did with Diaby at Villa for a great goal. But he'll be 26 this year and he's shown very little improvement in all that time. I don't understand how anyone can be such a passionate supporter of a player who offers us very little compared to a better player we could get if we accepted decent money for him.

"It is not his fault that Wenger has not signed a better right midfielder to play above him." -- fair enough, it's not his fault. Also, I do credit Eboue for being willing to play anywhere and never complaining about it, the guy keeps quiet most of the time. Good for him. That doesn't change the fact that AW insists on relying on a player in the squad who simply is not good enuf for a top 4 club and rejects a very good offer -- it's not as if AW's transfer budget is full to the brim after all.

"You also seem to think I approve of abusing him at the ground" - Tell me where I said that? When have I ever related your name to abuse at a game? And I will repeat, Eboue is good enough to be a squad player for us. He is good enough to play games for us. Inter Milan and At. Madrid have been interested in hm. He is not a crap player by any stretch. Go and insult Fabregas if you want, I have done enough of that myself this season.

I have one opinion, you have another, I perhaps went too far in calling you an idipt, but you go just as far by accusing me of stating that you find it acceptable to boo our players (something I have been accused of saying before). If you don't want to discuss, fair enough. I win.

LOL, Tom, ok it's not an argument. Just a heated (for a time) discussion. BTW, I never believed that Inter were really in for Eboue. I just can't take seriously the idea of Jose Mourinho being really interested in putting Eboue into his team. (that may get another rise out of you, but it's not my intention).

23/01/2009 22:17:00

But Mourinho and Wenger are football managers, we are not. Inter need a top class right back who does not just defend, Eboue is that. Same with At. Madrid. I know you may find it hard to accept that Eboue is a good player, better than most, but he really is. Is he a better player than Ray Parlour? I never watched Ray play so I cannot comment, but I have never been told that he was a fantastic footballer, just more defensive security. That is Eboue's job.

Inter doesn't need a right back, they have Zanetti and Maicon
