Deal Or No Deal? Arshavin On His Way Home

No Deal.

According to Sky Sports News, Arsenal will not meet the demands for long term target Andrei Arshavin.

Arshavin had flown to London in anticipation of signing for Arsenal on deadline day, however it's understood that his journey was in vein.

The Gunners had said they will stick to their principles throughout the saga and now it appears their principles will cost them their man.

AA is said to be on his way to the airport to fly home.

Arsenal.com article - "We don't need an instant saviour"
Rocky7
Don't worry, Eboue is a pass master. I hope this club doesn't have the ******** cheek to raise prices next season. Mediocrity is what this club has settled on, it had better start reflecting that in the price structure.
Little Dutch
Clowns, didnt they find out what type of salary he was on before starting negotiations with Zenit? Honestly the backlash of this deal falling through could be huge. I dont mind coming 5th or below if I see the club making an effort to achieve greatness but the acceptance of mediocrity is a f*@king joke.
iceman10
Why did Wenger even bother to talk about why he wanted this man then, something he never does before capturing a player?! This is outrageous!!
GoonerLou
I see the "Yes" column has gone up a bit...
Tom14
The only thing that doesn't make sense is why he would decide to leave right now. He would only do that if he knew 100% that the deal wasn't going to happen. What a joke we have become.
Gooner_Vin
######%%%%%%%{********€€$$$$¥¥¥!!!!!!!!!
julieloveshenry4ever
GV - I'd assume he's spoken to Arsenal and they've told him to bugger off home.
Rocky7
if it did breakdown, it could be either due to Zenit's asking fee or arshavin's wage demand, either way, AW would have wanted to keep his interest under wraps till it finalises. Unfortunately, Zenit and arshavin's agent don't share that value and once it went public, we lost all our bargaining chips - the pressure from the press and our own fans, and our persistent poor showing certainly don't help. Zenit would naturally hold out for a premium fee since we're more "desperate" to buy than they are to sell. But then again would there be more twist and turns (since there's about another 6 hrs to go) considering the source of this breaking news?
Temasek
Regi did say that we have somebody lined up if we don't sign him, that Rosina or whoever. Maybe we will, but don't expect it.
Tom14
Anyone else feeling incredibly let down right now? Scratch that, I already know the answer.
Rocky7
But as a club you either want a player or you don't, this is not a £30m request from Zenit, we're talking a few million quid. If Arsenal aren't going to act like a top club then they should stop charging like a top club.
Professor Calculus
OK I'm starting a straws-clutching series. (1) Maybe it's a stunt to force Zenit into accepting this deal? (2) Maybe Arsene has someone else up his sleeves that doesn't cost as much as £15m? (3) Maybe the doctor's called Arsene saying that Cesc, Theo, Rosicky, even Diaby, Eboue and Silvestre can come back this week? Other than these, I just don't accept the board have given up, and rather out of character, even before the deadline hour!
GoonerLou
Yeah Prof, you either want a player or you don't. There's a Chinese saying that goes 'It's not a bad thing if you pay over the odds for something, only bad if you pay for something wrong.' If the board think Arshavin is the right guy, why would £3m now versus later be the deal-breaker? It's not even the case of adding or saving £3m, if the reports are to be believed, but the case of paying £3m now or later it seems. It's Alonso all over again, the board choose £2/3m over a player they claimed they wanted - that's the gate revenue for ONE home game! I just don't ******** get it!
GoonerLou
That's £3million we will save will look like peanuts compared to the £30M we lose for playing UEFA cup football next season.
Rocky7
Ex-********-act-********-ly Rocky!! And not to count the difficulties in attracting players in summer, or even keeping our stars like RvP and Theo whose deals are to be renegotiated!! ARGHHHH
GoonerLou
That will be the extra £3million we will roughly be gettting for the unexpected Cardiff replay 2moro then?
iceman10
Is it really about un not being able to afford it? I just don't think they have the balls to spend whet they think is more than a player is worth. What a load of *****, Arshavin is worth 25mil in the current marker at least. Bull *****.
Tom14
The club is just being stubborn, its nothing to do with the 3m IMO. They (arsene) has a valuation of the player and aren't willing to pay more than that because they think they are super-canny at doing these deals. No, Arshavin may not be an 'instant saviour' but I bet he'd add tangibly more to our right-side in the final third than Eboue - some assists, a few goals maybe, the difference between drawing and winning a tight match???
Gooner_Vin
Ah well Iceman, for cup games we share the gate receipts with the visiting team. £3m/game is like regular league games, but you get the idea! If we weren't a publicly quoted company with financial reports and all that, I'd be seriously thinking there's some underlying money problems with the club that we didn't know of! Also to think the undeserved money we're paying Ade right now! You know if the reports about Ade's pay being doubled to 80k a week, an increment of 40k x 52 weeks = £2m+ already!! >_<
GoonerLou
I will be so pi**ed off if no deals happen. I want the board to be honest with us and just tell us how things are. If they are financialy screwed then tell us so, so we know that we are aiming lower and can lower our expecations. F***ing b***ocks really. If they then rub it in with a story of how we wont break the bank, injuries will be like new signings or i have faith in our abilities i will go on a Grandtheft auto type spree.
paul_ownz
on again ...or again... might still happen before the deadline
ArabianKnight
The stories I'd heard before all this had broken was that AA flew here of his own accord and wasn't invited by the club because no deal had been agreed. Arsenal Football Club has a massive decision to make today that extends far beyond the importance of one Russian footballer. This team needs new blood, we CAN afford it, we DO need it and this club DOES need to make a statement of intent. It looks to me like Arsenal have not so much chosen mediocrity as written it a blank cheque and pointed it towards the mini bar.
Little Dutch
Villa have spent £4million on Heskey when they could have had him for free in the summer. Why because its a starement of intent on where they want to be next season, on the face of it its a waste of £4million but the reality is its a great bit of business when your trying to push a club forwards. I guess by 5pm we will know where this club is heading in the near future.
iceman10
When you think that MU regularly spend £30m each year for star players, you understand why their team is so strong. These days you can't win titles on the cheap with unproven quality. Why didn't we keep Flamini? Apparently he was looking for another £10k a week ie 0.5m more per year but AW was intransigeant. Yet they don't hesitate to charge fans top dollar. Everytime i go to the Emirates that's another £50 to £70 out when apparently Barca and MU charge a fraction of that. I don't mind paying a premium for London but that's taking the Michael. Even the so-called 'smaller' clubs like Portsmouth, Villa, Everton and Spurs outspend us every year without CL money.
Gael-Force
Spot on Iceman. And that £4million was vindicated almost instantly with Heskey earning Villa 3 points in his first game. Where as we apparently happy with playing Eboue and Diaby on the wings.
Rocky7
Correction: Spurs are a small club not a so-called one.
Gael-Force
That statement on the official website about not needing an instant saviour is just to prime us for the fact we're not going to make any signings. We had to rest van Persie on Saturday, our most in-form player, because we're saving him for future games and we duly went and drew the game.
Gooner_Vin
Is anyone finding this just too surreal (in a bad way), I mean why would this break down now? I think I'm just going through the classic phases of inevitable doom, first shock, then denial, then acceptance, then anger, then shock, then more anger, then finally doom and gloom and Eboue.
Professor Calculus
LOL - I'm right with you Prof. Quite the rollercoaster.
Rocky7
Yeah Prof, 'surreal' is the word, nothing is making any sense to me at all. Why the 90% talk? Why the 'why I want Arshavin' interview? Why the cheeky smile at press conferences? Why saving the bloody £3m and posing out on the £30m CL spot? Why oh why??? To be a Gooner is one of the most painfully difficult things to do in football... I feel like collapsing too, can't imagine how the lads are feeling in the team.
GoonerLou
If talks have indeed broken down then Wenger is a massver Bulls"*&^%er. How can a deal be 90% without practically agreeing a fee? And if it's practically agreed a fee then why not go the whole hog at this late stage? The only realistic reason Arsenal shouldnt follow through on this is if Zenit have moved the goal posts ... but after the dropped their asking price from £20M to £15M I very much doubt it.
Rocky7
Yeah right, now arsenal.com has put up a Kolo interview with the headline 'We just need to believe.' It's 31st Aug midnight all over again!! Our injured players will be like new signings. We just have to hang in there. There's quality in the squad. Same old same old. Only that the main character changed from Alonso to Arshavin.
GoonerLou
The mere fact that any of you have believe anything that this club has told us is beyond me, they're taking us ALL for mugs and have been for years now.
shewore
OK guys, it's officially DEAD, says agent by text again lol: http://timesonline.typepad.com/fanzine_fanzone/2009/02/arsenal-arshavi.html
GoonerLou
WHat for a Arshavin Shirt to be printed at Man City! app hes stuck at the airport becuase of snow. Possibly could work in our favour.....maybe its not 100% percent dead.....i ant believe it though. Wenger said we needed players and hes bought ***** all!
daveski
What I don't understand is all this one target bollox. There always a possibilty that a certain transfer won't go through so you need to look at multiple players, but no, we'll go for one and even though Wenger admits we need new players if that single target goes tits up that's it ..... nothing.
Rocky7
Too comfortable, too complacent - that sums up where AFC and Arsene Wenger currently are. Fans spending tons of their hard-earned money to watch games. Away fans travelling all over the country not even being acknowledged by players.
Gooner_Vin
Our current crop of players don't care about the supporters, how on earth we can justify having a wage bill that's up there with United's when our squad have won eff all is beyond me. Arsene's downfall will be his loyalty to dross.
shewore
We need proper answers from the board & wenger if we dont sign properly by the end of this transfer window, but while Wenger is at the Helm we will never get straight answers. Not that i want to see him out, i just dont want to be fu**** around by the club i love and support. When you spend 1k plus on home tickets, a further 1k on away trips in england and europe, travelling costs and all the rest, i probably fork out 20 percent of my wages on Arsenal to get lied too.
paul_ownz
If not for this 'soap opera' (not my words, just from the Russian press), I'd be laughing at Keane's return to Spurs. Now I can't possibly find anything funny anymore.
GoonerLou
The Premier League looking to extend the transfer deadline due to the snow. Fan-f*&^ing-tastic.
Rocky7
lol on Heathrow's advice cos a certain Russian passenger is stuck there eh? lol
GoonerLou
If this deal could have been put together it would have done. There are all sorts of stories that complicate this deal - one of them concerning a £5m payment required by AA's agent . It wouldn't be a simple matter of £3m up front or later. The only surprise is that it was allowed to drag on for so long but then again the club have consistently told us that they were nowhere near a deal. All the talk been from AA's agent and Zenit - just as it was in the summer.
Amos.
Ownz, i can see it turning full circle, i really can...FC Arsenal anyone?! Someone is lying up there, all we wanna do is be told straight. And also show some humility and admit to mistakes being made in the past... Wenger's post match interviews now are beyond embarrassing, he can't be a**ed. Never gives a straight answer, just taking the p1ss out of us.
shewore
'If this deal could have been put together it would have done' - no ****!! I reckon even if we did sign this lad, there'd be so much expectation on his shoulders it may not work.
shewore
I am seriously unhappy right now :( - What the ***** is wrong with the club? As said above, we need the new blood - it's so obvious it's painful. Like, actually, emotionally, and physically painful - The world and his dog can see Arsenal are struggling this season, and in all probability could have predicted this predicament after the failure to strengthen in the summer.
Gunnerman
Honestly Amos if we and Zenit were miles apart, where did the 90% come from? Then when asked AGAIN by a reporter to follow up on the 90%, Arsene said with a smile trying to be funny: "91%." That's just plain bad expectation management.
GoonerLou
Contentment= mediocrity. That's really all that needs to be said.
Little Dutch
He never said it was 90% done, just that Arshavin was the last 10% if the puzzle. THIS IS *****!
Tom14
Of course if we make signings(decent) by the end of today you can ignore my 2 rants on this post. At the moment it would be tempting to be a armchair fan, save the money i spend each year and go on amazig holidays each year. New zealand, brazil, south africa, mauritius...mmmm
paul_ownz
Lou - if i done that in my job on something important '90% there guv, honest ;-)' then didn't get anywhere near delivering it i'd be in a spot of bother and have to justify it emphatically, Arsene won't have to.
shewore
Without PL experience the chances of Arshavin having a significant impact on this season are not great. There are 14 games to go until the end of the season and he can't play in the CL. Whatever we achieve or fail to achieve this season will depend far more on what on what we already have than anyone we bring in now.
Amos.
Thats bull Amos. Complete bull crud.
Tom14
What Amos is saying is technically correct, however our squad would have a better chance of improving and winning something with him in the team than without. And it would also show some ambition from the club staff, ambition that has been severly lacking in recent times.
Rocky7
Which part Tom? that Arshavin isn't guaranteed to have a major impact or that we will depend as much on at least another 10 players to achieve anything?
Amos.
But Amos, it doesn't matter, cos we're on the tightrope and nearly over the other end eh? What you're saying is correct, the fact that the club is showing no ambitions apart from being a superb financial model is what gets me.
shewore
Tom your reputation at posting rubbish is fast catching up with you, how can you guarantee this Russian is going to do anything special to this football club?
shewore
Like I say, this goes far beyond the importance of one player. This is about freshening up a playing staff rank with apathy and fresh out of ideas (not to mention distinctly average), this is about a statement of intent from our football club, a chance to say "*********, we are Arsenal, we don't want to accept 5th place so we're going to go out there and do something about it." We managed to balls up a signing for a very good footballer in the summer who was available at a very good price and now we've done it again. Somewhere along the line you have to accept that things have gone badly wrong with the whole attitude of this club in such a short space of time. That's fine, I can accept not being top dog anymore and supporting an avaerage team. Really I can, Arsenal have been below average in my lifetime and I coped with it fine. But a) don't expect to charge me £1,800 and then expect me to smile and make excuses for a club that looks incapable of even making a transfer now and b) stop putting lipstick on a pig and feeding me bull***** about how a 19 year old, wildly inconsistent, occasionally brilliant, yet still very, very raw winger who wasn't good enough to stop our problems post December is suddenly going to be "like a new signing." No, he isn't, he is going to be the same player he was when we lost to Stoke in November.
Little Dutch
I firmly believe SSN got conned. They just issued another statement saying that talks are continuing. They made a massive effort to ensure everyone knew that the information that talks broke down came from someone else. The reporter must have said "we were told talks broke down", with the emphasis on "Told" about ten times.
Rocky7
But after this saga, the players would have felt just as let down as we are feeling now, if not more so. That itself is damage to team confidence, versus the boost they could have received from a new player joining them, regardless of the tangible results that Arshavin could or could not deliver in his first few months in England.
GoonerLou
It doesn't go beyond the importance of one player. Arshavin is either worth having for what they are asking or he isn't. If he isn't then it is best to just walk away rather than to buy a player just to make a 'statement of intent' to satisfy some supporters. If we really want him and he really wants to join us we could probably still pick him up in the summer for less than is being asked for now. Whatever happens this season isn't critical in the context of the club.
Amos.
If he's not worth having for the price we're quoted, why wait 31 days to decide? This isn't about satisfying supporters, this is about the entire club and the whole air of complacency that's in it, the players, the board and the manager, trying to convince us that 4th is the best thing any club could possibly hope to achieve. In 1995, we'd just finished 12th and lost our manager in disgrace. We signed Bergkamp. In 2001, we finished a distant 2nd for the third season in a row and we signed Campbell. We're at a similar crossorads now.
Little Dutch
Haha Rocky really! Please post the latest bits, good news or bad, whatever you hear on telly as we don't have SSN here (thank goodness in a way)!
GoonerLou
If this Arshavin deal falls through, I will hibenate for the rest of the season. My season will come to a premature end.
Warri Gooner
We don't know what the deal is or how it's made up but statements on Zenits official website tell us that it goes beyond just the fee to the club. From the little we know, including the statement from Hill-Wood a couple of weeks back, our final position had been made clear some time ago. Wenger has repeatedly stated that 'we are no nearer a deal' since then. That the deal is still open is only because others have outside the club sought to keep it open.
Amos.
BREAKING NEWS. AA said he will quit football if the deal fails.
collow
Well unless there's an immense surprise in the next few hours, it looks like we didn't line up any contingency plan. That's exactly the same mistake we made in the summer with Alonso. If this has been clearly deadlocked for so long, why weren't we lining up someone else? If this doesn't go through, there's simply no amount of excuses anyone can offer which prevents this from being anything other than amateur.
Little Dutch
http://www.arsenal.com/news/news-archive/wenger-why-i-want-to-sign-andrei-arshavin That link is not an example of somebody outside the club keeping the deal open. That was the manager of this football club this Friday past.
Little Dutch
Being the incurable optimist that I am, I remain positive and hopeful.
Warri Gooner
there is still hope. http://www.onlinegooner.com/exclusive/index.php?id=987
collow
Agree with you LD - I fail to see why we adopt this one target only policy. It's farcile to say the least.
Rocky7
Wow it seems like Arsenal and Arshavin are in the competition called 'Who's more desperate now?'
GoonerLou
Amos - I think he can have a significant impact for us this season. In those 14 remaining league games I would much rather have Arshavin than Eboue in our side. For one, he is far better equipped with knowing what to do in the final third either in terms of passing or scoring compared to Eboue. Rosicky isn't back for 8 weeks. Cesc for similar. We cannot rely just on Nasri and van Persie to create chances for this team. We need to speculate and take a gamble. So I think he can have a significant impact - even if that's a reflection on just how poor what we have now is.
Gooner_Vin
Good for you Warri, at least someone is in a good mood! lol
Rocky7
That was nothing more than a manager responding to a question as to what he sees in Arshavin. You need to join it up with what has been said before - and since.
Amos.
Funking c0cking ballbags to this. Arsene needs to GET THE CHEQUEBOOK OUT. JUST RUDDY DO IT!!!!!
Moorish
Can anyone now tell me that either the Nasri or Baptista deals were as frustrating as this. No, this is the worst in Arsenal history.
paul_ownz
talks are still on going. http://www.goal.com/en/news/1712/arsenal/2009/02/02/1089897/arsenal-in-ongoing-talks-with-zenit-over-arshavin-report
collow
Clearly Wenger would like Arshavin in the side to and thinks he can make a difference otherwise there wouldn't have been any interest in the first place. But the world won't end if we don't get him. It isn't a make or break deal.
Amos.
Agreed Paul, this one is the worst indeed. Last time it's only Nasri's agent that's playing games. Now Zenit, his jerk of an agent, and his own demands are proving incredibly tough for our board, including Ivan someone (can't be bothered to check his last name) who's supposed to bring loads of experience in negotiating player contracts. Not saying he's good or not good, it's just plain painful for everyone involved, including (especially) us.
GoonerLou
The world won't end, but Arsenal's tenure at the top table of English football probably will. The manager didn't need to answer that question, he could have side stepped it. Particularly if the deal really was deadlocked at that point. The club are also responsible entirely for the output on their official website, they didn't have to frontpage it.
Little Dutch
Zenit director confirms talks still ongoing: http://www.setanta.com//uk/Articles/Football/2009/02/02/Premier-League-Arshavin-update/gnid-38280/
GoonerLou
No Amos, but we don't do every deal to make or break, do we?
Gooner_Vin
Yes - the deal has been in Zenit's and the players court for some time.It is Zenit that has consistently said they were still negotiating. The club has consistently said there has been no movement. I don't believe if we don't sign Arshavin the club's tenure at the top table of English Football comes to an end. The whole history of a 120+ year old club hinges on just one signing? The club has no other resources and this one transfer period will determine next season and the seasons that follow does it? It's disappointing for supporters looking for a 'statement of intent' but in the real world it's just a another deal that didn't work out -if that is the case. Another one will come along later.
Amos.
I don't think LD meant our time in the PL would come to an end Amos, but certainly as one of the top teams. The club has certainly spent some time as a mediocre team in it's 120 years and unless there are some changes I reckon we'll be there again soon enough.
Rocky7
err, 120+ years at the top table of English football? That most certainly hasn't been the case. Amos, your blind faith in this regime is admirable, to say the least.
shewore
I think we need to take a step back and judge this situation after the transfer deadline is over. That said, I dont care if Arshavin is signed or not - this squad is crying out for quality reinforcements and needs to sign SOMEBODY, ANYBODY!!
prits
the telegraph is reporting that theres word from the Emirates that the deal has been done......... who knows..... but i'll bet my bottom dollar that we'll only know for sure when Arsene decides its time for us to know
KBGoon
arsne F***ing pi**es me off sometimes. If we dont sign him we will not be fourth place or higher bby the end of the season. We cant keep up with teams lik man utd chelsea and liverpool who dont mind spending 30 mill on proven players, much less spending 15mill
gunner24
I didn't think for one moment that LD was claiming we would be relegated. There is no doubt that the club will have periods of mediocrity in the future - all clubs do. Relativley speaking wWe are just such a period now though one that others would be content with. Deciding that mediocrity is to be our fate simply because we fail to sign Arshavin doesn't seem to be a judgement based on anything other than frustration.
Amos.
I agree with Prits, ANYBODY that the manager wants at all, I just trust him whoever he signs, as long as he signs!
GoonerLou
Amos - It's not just the failure to sign AA (if indeed we don't) but the failure to fill the massive gaping hoes left in our team that have materialised over the past couple of years. This is just the culmination of all the previous failures.
Rocky7
Where did I say we had spent 120+ years at the top table shewore? It's just such misunderstandings that lead to your frustration. And prits you're wrong I am afraid. The one thing we don't need to do is sign anybody. We have to sign players better than we already have within a budget that we can justify.
Amos.
"gaping hoes"? That's not what I meant at all!! lol
Rocky7
If the player's demands were the only hold-up, with him already here stuck in the snow, *****ed off and hating to go back to St. Petersburg as a laughing stock (this saga has already been branded 'the soap opera' in Russia), it works in our favour that Arshavin might just want to close it asap (probably as much as we do) and drop some of his demands. (Pardon my mood swings, it happens twice a year, sorry.)
GoonerLou
i agree with you on that one Amos... if Arsene signs no-one he must have good reason, or belief that the players we have WILL come right. Our recent form is as much to do will injuries as it is on poor performance. If our squad were running at 100 percent fit i'm sure we would be contending if not at the top. and i think we ALL know that to be true without additional signings
KBGoon
Our recent 'form' unfortunately is down to the ability of our players, not their potential, or the fact that they are in poor form, it's their ability. They worked their tits off on Saturday (apart from Ade) and didn't get a result, just not good enough i'm afraid, so can't grumble there.
shewore
boy am i gonna get a kicking from our companys internet police. all i've done all day so far is keep refreshing the transfer pages to find out whats goin on. :-(
KBGoon
There weren't any gaping holes last season. We have really just lost Flamini and Hleb - and since then Rosicky for the season. The rest were just irrelevant squad numbers. We have replaced Flamini internally and brought in Nasri to replace Hleb. Whether that's a gaping hole or just a hole depends on your perspective I guess but It's one we can plug in time. That we didn't in the summer is a shame but understandable if we really believed that Rosicky would play '80% of games' . If we don't find a replace in this window it's a disappointment but only that - it's not critical to the future prospects of the club. Prophesies of the clubs impending doom and decline are overdone and unrealistic.
Amos.
As has been said before, it's not doom and gloom, i just wish they'd admit that finishing 5/6th is extremely likely and stop feeding us BS about chasing the title. Flamini has not been replaced anywhere near adequately, that, is painfully obvious. And Gilberton and Diarra most certainly were not 'irrelevant squad numbers', both could have been key players for us this year. And how could he xpect Rosicknote to play 80% of games when they couldn't genuinely diagnose what was keeping him out last year? More lies.
shewore
Gilberto and Diarra were not key players for us last year. Diarra might have played this season but wouldn't have had anymore of an impact than Denilson, Diaby, Song or Eboue. Our problem is in the creative part of our game which isn't anything that Diarra would have contributed anything meaningful to. Medical advice, including external independent advice was that Rosicky would be back playing early September. They were wrong but not lying.
Amos.
There are conflicting reports about this -- the AST are saying that Arshavin is still in London. This deal isn't dead yet.
jaelle
Shewore didn't say they were key players .... he said "Could have been key players". As for Diarra, he might not be the creative influence we need, but he is a spark. He breaks up play, wins the ball and can create space in the blink of an eye to set off a quick counter. But then again, it was mostly the players fault that he isn't here.
Rocky7
Talksport interviewed Zenit rep who said that Arshavin is still in London. Also from the Telegraph: FROM THE TELEGRAPH: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/leagues/premierleague/arsenal/4413006/Alisher-Usmanov-may-be-key-to-Arshavin-move-move.html Alisher Usmanov may be key to Arshavin move “Over a month later and the deal is still at an impasse, a Byzantine series of negotiations failing to bring the early resolution Arsenal desired. It is understood that Arsene Wenger has never devoted so much time and effort to a transfer and has become enormously frustrated with Zenit’s machinations - so much so that the deal was feared dead last Wednesday.”
jaelle
At least one Russian journalist has been able to retain a sense of humour about the whole affair 'It seems that for Gazprom (Zenit's owners), it has been easier to negotiate the reopening of gas pipes to Ukraine than it has been for them to sell Arshavin.'
Amos.
I hope this transfer window does not get an extention. I am sick to my teeth of this whole Arshavin saga. It would be a great and well needed boost for both the team and ourselves if we got him but at this point I personally want it over so we can get back to whats really important. Do i think we are going to sign anyone? probably not, my reason for thinking that is simple, over the last few days there have been numerous reports about the return of Cesc, Theo and Rosicky, if ya ask me they are buttering us up for disappointment. Lets hope Im proven wrong.... Roll on 5pm please!
Unwell
The deadline has been extended but only if you qualify for the criteria laid out by the PL, criteria we almost certainly dont qualify for. If he isnt here by 5pm .... here wont be here at all.
Rocky7
finally some good news! cheers Rocky! :P

For some reason I've convinced myself that this will go on until the end of time, from now on every day will be an Arshavin Day. I have a faint memory of a time before Arshavin Day, I think I had a wife and kids or perhaps that was next door, anyway they say that other news was reported back in those days. Hard to imagine such a time.
Professor Calculus
much simplier times.. ahh those were the days! Back then 3 draws in a row was considered a bad week!

Yeah but Amos, with the injury record of this club it was really really stupid not to bring in some experienced quality when they had the chance in the summer. I read Clichy saying that this season's injuries are "unbelievable" when in fact they are totally believable based on the last three years. It's like surviving a bear attack then running back in the forest screaming for joy, as a club you expect Arsenal to attempt to reduce the odds of failure, the only way they can do that off the pitch is by bringing in players based on a worst case scenario brief.
Professor Calculus
It's only stupid in hindsight Prof. How many injuries should we cater for each season? Do we spread the risk equally over all three areas midfield, attack and defense or do we provide greater cover for midfield anticipating that we might have more long term injuries there than elsewhere? If so do we provide equally for wide and central midfield or are we more or less likely to have to cover right midfield than left or central midfield? How big should the squad be? What is the worst case scenario? Our squad seems to be an average size of 25 or so whereas Villa have got away this season with using I understand just 15 players. We have been unfortunate with injuries this season (though that isn't the sole reason for our present travails). Nonetheless covering every possible permutation relies as much on luck as judgement.
Amos.
Whilst we clearly lack creativity (hence the need for arshavin) to say we have adequately replaced flamini is a joke! Same back 4 has conceeded more goals than last season the reasons being we don't have a flamini type in front of the back 4 and we give the ball away to easily inviting pressure

These injuries aren't unbelievable for a club with our lack of depth. We have a fantastic first XI but if they aren't all healthy we have only mediocre players behind them so Wenger is forced to play our first XI without proper rotation to heal the inevitable knocks until they build into a serious injury. I don't care if it is Arshavin that we buy just as I didn't care if it was Alonso last summer - those are the names we know about so that is what we talk about. In the past I trusted Wenger to sign an equally good or better player I'd never heard of while we were distracted by the headlines. Now it seems he's wrapped up with the headline player and has no new ideas past the one or two names thrown about. Completely unacceptable. I don't want Wenger to go anywhere but this is what happens when a manager knows he doesn't have to produce to keep his job.
smithdj74
Like I said first time around, this isn't about Arshavin the man, it's biogger than that. Frankly, I've seen the dude play three times, but if Wenger thinks he'sany good, that's fine with me. What isn;t fine with me is that the last time we put in a performance that was above adequate was Porto at home in September. 5 months ago. That's not because of bad luck or injury, that's because it's a true reflection of what we are. As shewore said, West Ham,Pompey, Bolton, Boro, we didn't not try in these games, we tried bloody hard, but we were pretty rubbish in all of them. By refusing to acknowledge and address how weak this squad has been allowed to become, the manager is accepting the current situation as one he is satisfied with. Three years ago, United went through a period of relative mediocrity for them (though they still won a League Cup and an F.A. Cup in that 3 years and never looked like finishing outside the CL places), Ferguson did not accept it and took action. I'm not demanding we spend £30m on this player and that player, just don't tell me Eboue is our new creative midfielder when you charge me nearly a tenth of my annual salary to watch home games, show me that you don't accept creating bugger all against the likes of West Ham, Bolton, Cardiff, Boro, Sunderland, Fulham, Citeh, Pompey, Kyiv, Fenerbahce, Stoke, Wigan, West Brom.

United recently went into a league game with twelve members of their listed first team squad unavailable. I didn't hear any bitching or moaning, they fielded a team, they won the game. On Saturday, we were missing 4 players. 4, that's all.
Little Dutch
@Amos. No of course they can't try and second guess every injury, what they can do is be realistic and look and the amount of young players, look at the amount of experienced players, realistically imagine a worst case scenario and sign a player who will bring both quality and if the worst happens, cover. If it all goes wrong with the new signing then the club did their part in reducing the odds of losing valuable points. Would the side have been better equipped to deal with injuries with or without a realistic target like Alonso? If the answer is yes then the club should have the dedication to sign that player, if the answer is yes but we don't want to spend 3 or 5 million quid over our estimated value then I think that the club isn't prepared to invest in the team and are more focused on the financial side of the club.

Amos: "How many injuries should we cater for each season?" -- fair enuf but for AW to plan his season believing he could rely on Rosicky just seems ridiculous to me.
jaelle
http://www.arsenal.com/news/news-archive/wenger-our-different-path-to-man-united.This sounds like a man warning us to expect mediocrity. Fine. Just reflect it in the ticket pricing please. P.S. Who writes the stuff on that effing site? Just read the first paragraph, it sounds like they're deliberately taking the *****.
Little Dutch
I think Amos writes it! :-)
elbondo
It does seem ridiculous in hindsight jaelle. It was probably just as ridiculous to rely on RvP not getting injured (yet) too. ManU have generated more than £500m+ more revenue than we have over the last 10 years. They continue to generate some £50m more than we do currently. We have had one year so far since the new stadium opened where we made a nett £30m. Of course ManU have a better, more experienced team than we do. Of course we have had to tread a different path - especially while funding the stadium investment. What is so hard to understand?
Amos.
I think Asrhavin should be a new word in the dictionary which can sum up a whole load of emotions. E.g. I cant get this square peg in the round hole, its bloody Arhsavin. Your examples please.
paul_ownz
Amos = Arsene? Have we been graced by the presence of the master all this time without knowing it?
smithdj74
I stubbed my toe on the coffee table this morning, it's hurt like Arshavin!!!
Rocky7
I sat on cold marble for too long and now I have Arshavin.
smithdj74
lol Paul. e.g. This newspaper is so Arshavin, full of lies!
GoonerLou
All we want is some humility and honesty from the club, i know we're The Arsenal and wouldn't deliberately stain someone else's name, but if this falls through all we need is Arsene to say 'i tried my nuts off with this one, but we kept on getting p1ssed about by his agent/Zenit and it just couldn't happen' none of this '90%' ****e. And then not to say how he 'believes' that this squad is getting better and players are improving, that may be the case, but they're still woefully short of the mark. I remember when we were finishing mid table and were, quite frankly, ****. But i also remember when finishing fourth would have been a travesty! (a lot more recent) now we're talking about it as a success, fine, but not for a club that charges well over £1k (average) on season tickets, brings out new shirts each year, brands football games with 'Arsenal' and expects the fans to pay more... the list is endles...and don't get me started on pandering to certain player's wage demands and letting other's run their contracts down....
shewore
http://www.arsenal.com/news/news-archive/wenger-our-different-path-to-man-united I think this concludes that then. Arshavin won't be coming.
ArsenalRob
Sorry just realised LD's already said it all for me.
ArsenalRob
Keane back to spurs. What a joke....
ArsenalRob
It appear Arsenal have done everything possible to sign AA, it's all down to this payment. Whilst I could condem the club for leaving it this late, they have seemingly done everything they can!
Rocky7
At last Arsenal and Zenit St Petersburg have finally agreed a fee for the transfer of Andrei Arshavin to the Gunners. The deal is still to be finalised though with Arshavin and the Russians still to sort out a final payment. It is understood Arshavin will wear the number 13 shirt. (skysports.com)

What the hell is going on with the comments on this page???? The last few posts are rolling by repeatedly. Anyway, been checking live updates on 3 Arsenal blogs all day and it looks like the deal is 99% done.
jaelle
Amos, I did say this squad needed QUALITy reinforcements, and I wanted anybody who would offer that. Not just any player. My post is clear enough on that aspect.
