'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Arshavin Is An Arsenal Player Say Zenit

Ever since the January transfer window slammed shut at 5pm(ish) yesterday, confusion has reigned supreme as to whether the Gunners had captured their main target, Andrei Arshavin.

Despite the registration paperwork allegedly reaching Premier League head quarters at 4.30pm, a good half an hour before the window closed, the deal has still the be ratified after only one of the PL's administrators made an appearance at work after some freak snow storms.

However, this morning it's seems that the transfer will be confirmed (though if they could get their fingers out it would be appreciated) by the Premier League and that Arshavin will wear the number 23 shirt.

Indeed Zenit St. Petersburg claim the transfer had gone through.

Zenit spokesman Alexei Petrov (the idiot who caused the confusion in the first place by claiming the deal had fallen through at the last) said 'Both clubs have managed to complete the deal. Arshavin will play for Arsenal from now on, the conditions of the contract are very favourable for Zenit, the value of the deal is much more than 12million.'

So one of the most ridiculous transfer in living memory is about to draw to a close, and with that I'd urge Arsene Wenger and his board never to deal with the rank amateurs at Zenit who have done absolutely nothing to make this deal run smoothly, indeed they made a pretty good job of ensuring this transfer was enveloped in twattishness.

Heh, *****tishness is putting things mildly. We all thought the Nasri transfer was protracted eh. This one puts our feelings in the summer in firm perspective. Lets welcome him once we see it on Arsenal.com.

Well said Paul and well said Prits.

Well f***ing finally! If you think you had it bad, well I'm living in St.Petersburg - it's been Arshavin this, Arshavin that for god knows how long! :)
RussianHammer
RH - Have Zenit always been this big a set of pumpers of did they try extra hard just for our benefit?
Rocky7
If this deal falls through i'm going to **** in a sock and throw it at my next door neighbours living room window! I realise it's not his fault but it would cheer me up! Let's hope for his sake that Arshavin is a done deal.......
codchops
And his window cleaner's sake too!!
Rocky7
good grief! I wish Zenit would quit talking. They make my brain hurt! Lets hope we get the official word from Arsenal.com this morn as i aint believing a single word coming out of the Zenit camp after the last month of fun and games! On another note I kind of hope he gets the number 10 shirt during the summer due to it becoming "vacant"!
Unwell
Rocky, I read that Bayern had signed Timoschuk (??) from Zenit, and I certainly did not read more than one column that reported his actual signing, never mind the tedium of the daily Arshavin updates. So, this extra effort seems to be only in Arshavin's case - we just happened to be caught in the crossfire.
prits
Poor bloke cleans his own windows!!! :)
codchops
I live next door
Spurmin
Codchop - I've got 20 "filled" socks coming you way .... go nuts fella!! ;)
Rocky7
They could actually make a film on this transfer with all the twists and turns, claims & counter claims with the clock ticking. Which actors would you have playing Arshavin, Wenger, Latcher & zenit reps. haha
paul_ownz
Cool Rocky, they'll be nice and fresh by the time they're shipped out here to Oz! ;)
codchops
You'd have to have Keifer Sutherland as Andrei Arshavin. 24 - The transfer.
Rocky7
Its gotta be Will Ferrell for the role of Alexei Petrov! Who better then an idiot to play an idiot!
Unwell
Will Ferrell is awesome. "Save me Tom Cruise!"
Rocky7
lol now i wanna go watch Talladega Nights! Its gotta be him for the role of perhaps Steve Carell(the guy who played Brick Tamlin in Anchorman)... Either way you gotta winner! No idea who could play "Le Prof" tho!
Unwell
or perhaps*
Unwell
Arsene Wenger's role should be played by Daniel Craig (He's just about cool enough to play any role on the planet) whilst the role of Latcher will be played by a small dyslexic chimp.
Rocky7
I like that Rocky "24 - The transfer". They would actually have enough materiel to make 24 1 hour episodes.
paul_ownz
lol Daniel Craig... so obvious! If talking didnt get the job done perhaps he could just start slapping sence into Zenit officials!
Unwell
Nothing is confirmed until it's on Arsenal.com
Gooner_Vin
Zenit have confirmed it. I know they are not the most reliable source, but they are bragging they got 15 mil plus bonuses.
paul_ownz
Concerning that still no confirmation from Arsenal though...
Gooner_Vin
Gotta love arsenal.com.. always working hard to tell us nothing. Had to laugh yesterday when i checked the site to find the most interesting article was "Vito Mannone - My Perfect Footballer "!! Exactly what i wanted to hear about yesterday!
Unwell
what was the answer? Oh thats right, you have to pay for that valuable piece of information
paul_ownz
Very interesting article. I agree that Zenit seem to be a real pain in the a*se to deal with but i think you all need to remember that they didnt really want to sell Arshavin and certainly dont need the money when you consider their owners wealth. I think most clubs would be similar when they dont want to really sell a player and that is the main reason why they put such an unrealistic price on his head when spurs were sniffing around him. At the end of the day you (fingers crossed guys) have him now so congratulations and lets hope he is a success as that would only be an improvement for the league as a whole
spursfan4eva
Arshavin has trouble maker written all over him. Hope you can keep him happy, he's undeniably talented. Don't understand what the hitch in completing the transfer is, but hope the FA will allow it to go through. Don't see how you can blame the lateness of the deal on the snow though, so might take a bit of wrangling...
fifthcolumnblue
They(zenit) would have you believe Arshavin was a trouble maker because he wanted to leave. They tried to blame him for wage demands and threatening not to playand even buying out his contract. Did they player ever say any of these things? No, in which case you have to take everything that has been said up till now with a pinch of salt.
paul_ownz
"Arsene Wenger's role should be played by Daniel Craig (He's just about cool enough to play any role on the planet) " -- as a huge DC fan, this I would like to see!! :-) Zenit have from the very start been intent on make Arshavin's departure a personal hell for the player, they've done this on purpose. Since the summer Arshavin's been the target not only of hostility from his employers but also from fans, from various Russian nationalistic groups, he's gotten death threats, etc. He himself has baggage all his own, I remember some quotes from Advocaat on how difficult he can be a difficult personality. It's like Zenit have had a vendetta against their star player for wanting to leave the club and play outside Russia. I'm amazed Arsenal managed to get this deal done. All over the net and in the media you have fans and pundits dissing AW and Arsenal for the way they've supposedly handled this deal -- it's incredibly unjust because it is precisely AW and Arsenal who've handled themselves in an honest, straightforward, no-nonsense, rational manner throughout this whole ordeal. Even Zenit reps were quoted saying that Arsenal have been very straightforward to deal with. It's Zenit who kept moving the goalposts every time they looked to have agreed on something--plus the fact they have many different voices saying contradictory things in public. Arsenal's silence is something to be commended as classy and dignified. That said, I do think it's ridiculous that Arsenal put their all their eggs in this one basket.
jaelle
gunnerblog are using quotes from a Russian site that say that we may have to wait two or three days for the deal to be confirmed. Its the FA Chief something or other. Check yourselves... http://gunnerblog.com/?p=1455 I highly doubt that this man would go to a Russian paper before an English one, it could be bull.
Tom14
Tom I've seen those quotes. Not only should everything coming from the Russian press be treated with suspicion (and as you point out, why would Bevington talk to the Russian press and not the English press?) but whoever "ascertained" the quotes obviously doesn't realise it's the Premier League who are ratifying the deal. So the Director of Communications of the F.A. wouldn't really be in a position to say anything.
Little Dutch
Why do these Russians enjoy talking to the press so much? Just like the dozens of 'spokesmen', directors and coach of Zenit, these people don't exactly have the final word on anything in this deal do they?!
GoonerLou
The Carlos Tevez effect is still taking its toll it seems. Now there is a typical "idiot" on Talk Sport (Adrian Durham) who will drum up hatred for Arshavin because he thinks that we have not actually passed through the paperwork for his signing. Therefore there will be a big Tevez-like discussion if we finish fourth at Villa's expense. We have done the deal before 5pm, we have been told that. The papers were sent through. The PL should have confirmed them by now.
Tom14
According to Gunnerblog "the transfer is in doubt". Ferking hell, we've muffed it. It ain't gonna happen. Damn stalling and penny pinching.
Moorish
gunnerblog has just corrected his entry and apologized for giving credence to an invented quote -- he's contacted the FA who have told him that no one from their office has spoken to the Russian media: "The FA have just confirmed to me that these quotes were entirely made up. So we can probably afford to calm down a bit. The official line from the Premier League, meanwhile, is that there are still several transfers pending approval - of which Arshavin is one." -- If you needed any further proof that there are people at Zenit and/or the Russian media absolutely DETERMINED to drag this deal out into a mess publicly, there it is. It's a conscious, deliberate attempt on the part of someone(s) to make this deal look totally insane -- the result is that we wind up looking bad.
jaelle
Gunnerblog have managed to try and make all Arsenal fans ***** themselves at all times. Playing down or not commenting on positive articles, but going over the top on any negative news. The paperwork was complete within the deadline. The only problem could be incorrect paperwork, and that would not be the case. If it is, we are stupid. But every party wanted the deal completed, so I doubt it would be scuppered in any way.
Tom14
And now I have to give credit to Gunnerblog for coming out and changing it, but what I said still stands.
Tom14
Jeepers what kind of people are this lot at Zenit? Are they off their trolley or what? What is the point of trying to muddy the waters when the deal is done and the player has gone? No wonder nobody else came in for him, Zenit are tossers to deal with. Calm down, it's in and admin queue. Wonder whereabouts Andrei is...
