Arsenal`s record breaking season

When Kolo netted in the 38th minute away to West Brom this month he set a new club record for the number of different scorers in a season. Arshavin`s goal against Blackburn has extended that record even further to 20 different scorers in all competitions.

The previous record of 18 had first been set in 2002/3 season and matched on 3 other occasions in 2004/5, 2005/6 and 2006/7 - all in the Wenger era.

The full list of scorers so far this season are:
Diaby, Fabregas, Toure, Nasri, Eduardo, Gallas, van Persie, Vela, Walcott, Denilson, Ramsey, Song, Silvestre, Wilshere, Clichy, Arshavin, Adebayor, Bendtner, Eboue, Simpson

We may go even further if Sagna or Djouro can get on the scoresheet but maybe if Rosicky makes it back he`ll stand the greater chance of adding to the total. It`s a minor record of course but in the 104 completed seasons of Arsenal Football Club it is something to acknowledge in a season of frustration so far.

What does it tell us about the season though? Is it that we play an expansive game where any player can score? Or is that we have struggled to find a settled formula or pattern of play and this record just reflects an extended injury list and a search for a consistent balance and team selection?

A coupleof reserve games for him to prove his fitness will take us nicely into May when the window reopens. We might even have him as an unused subs to attract potential suitors. Before you kill the xmas turkey, you must fatten it up.

i dun agree with yu on that. Wenger will give him a fair chance to prove his fitness again & once he is fit again which im sure he will be, Tomas will be a smashing player for us. if we can reach the CL semis and the all important league run in come may, he will be a valuable addition to the team. im praying he'll be fit enough to play some sort of part in the FA cup semis if we get there..

It does reflect an extended injury list. It will be interesting to see the stats on the number of players used this season as compared to last, as also the number of goals scored in total (which is right up Amos' alley). That will give us a better indication, although this is a good stat to have in a frustrating season.

On another note.I watched a very subdued Hleb comin in as a sub in Barca,s 2 nil victory over Almeria today,Guardiola put out a weakened side without Henry,Etoo(he was a sub),Puyol. Felt almost............almost sorry for him,he came in& made no impact cos the game was already won. He looked a pale imitation of the Hleb we know.He seems not to have the confidence of the manager,u know something is wrong when youth players like Busquets and Bojan make more appearances than a presumed established player brought in for a lot of money. Well, serves him right,at least he is in the club of his DREAMS. *****,he will probably be discarded in the summer and find his way back to his comfort zone in Germany.A few weeks ago I would have jumped at the chance to bring him back even on loan, but now who needs him? Same for Ade,he now needs to fight for the previlege to be our starting forward and if he thinks the crap we were putting up with before he got injured is goin to cut is,he is sorely mistaken. AW should be ruthless with selection now cos w need all the points we can get before May and Keep Villa and even Everton at bay. (Phew!!! got carried away.)

Hleb deserves every bit of what he's experiencing, so does Flamini. Sometimes you have to take one step back to take two forward, and we now have Arshavin, a complete player not one who runs and twists in circles. Great result yesterday though, should be a 6 point lead over Villa after the next two games, maybe even 9 points after 3 games.

Although it's good to have a large amount of different scorers, I doubt many teams have won anything without at least 1 player getting 20 goals! Sorry for putting a negative point in. However hopefully after Tomorrow night we can be forth, semi's of the FA cup and quarters of the CL. That's not too bad.

Flamini is actually doing better at Milan than Hleb is at Barca. Flamini's started more games recently, or given several minutes as a sub (not just 5 mins at the end). He started this weekend against Siena and immediately made an impact by drawing a penalty. I don't think Hleb will make it at Barca but Flamini might. // Great, just when I'd put aside my disbelief in Rosicky's eventual return, arse.com tells us he's had a 2-week setback. I agree with LD, we'll never see him play for Arsenal again. Not sure he'll play for ANYONE ever again. // No media outrage over Diouf's disgusting assault on Almunia. Never mind the other assaults on our players by Allardyce's thugs. Arshavin was late for the 2nd half because he had to have 4 stitches on his foot -- a result of the deliberately vicious assaults of one of Fat Sam's thugs.

Fantastic weekend for Arsenal, incl. the biggest shock of the weekend (never mind the scousers' result at OT): Eboue scored TWO goals! Congrats to Liverpool for thrashing Yoonited at OT! I watched that game with gooner friends, at a bar full of supporters from other clubs. Nearly the entire bar, incl. us gooners, surprised ourselves by cheering on the scousers loudly when they kept scoring against Yoonited. So many of us are sick and tired of Ferguson and his bully boys. Other amazing football things this weekend: Lyon lose on their home ground to a team 5 pts from relegation, the spuds do us a huge favor (!), an amazing breathtaking game between Villareal and Atletico battling it out for 4th place, and absolutely sublime goals from Barca, Arshavin and Pato. Oh yeah -- and did you know EBOUE SCORED TWICE?!?!

As for the many goal scorers we've had, I choose to see it as a compliment to our verstatile and dynamic squad! :-D // BTW, I thought I'd been transported to an alternate universe when I saw Wiley make those 2 decisions against Yoonited. I actually saw an English FA referee award a penalty against Yoonited at OT *AND* send off a Yoonited player at OT! Don't tell me Wiley has no cojones! So will he be punished for daring to violate the unwritten rules of refereeing at OT, like that referee was who dared to send off Terry when he rugby-tackled Jo, thus denying Jo a clear goal-scoring opportunity? When was the last time you saw a penalty given AGAINST Yoonited at OT??? And when was the last time a Yoonited player was sent off at OT??? Never mind BOTH in the same game! The denizens of the underworld must be freezing right now!

BTW, folks--a few games after Liverpool destroyed Chelsea's home record, we arrived to add salt to the wound. I hope the same thing happens when we go to OT.

i suppose my interpretation of this record is that we have a lot of potential in our players, we're just still waiting for them to fully develop, though some might not be 'top 4' quality in the end.

I think it makes our "better" players look worse than our "average" ones. The likes of Bendtner and Eboue should not be ecpected to score as many as they have done, whereas Nasri, Walcott (in the games he has played) and the two main strikers could/should have had more.

Tom - Bendtner's scored 5 goals in 22 appearances in the league this year, i'm assuming you expected him to score less?

I was thinking the same as PaulOwnz. I desperately wanted Liverpool to lose. We could then cut it to 3 and two more draws would get us third (automatic qualification this year?). But now in hindsight I'd rather the 4-1 humiliation at OT. If the Spuds think a 5-1 loss away in a meaningless cup is bad, how must Man Utd fans feel?..And as Jaelle said, Liverpool paved the way, maybe we'll go there and hit Utd for 4 or 5 with Arshavin, Nasri, Cesc, Theo and so on..cant wait.

Shewore, appearances numbers do not always show the truth. He should ahve had more, because he has had the chances, but nobody would have expected him to have 11 in 35.

The figures are perhaps fairer when you consider he has 11 goals in 22 starts?

Never bought into that 'starts' stat, comparing apples with oranges really, unless ofcourse we're just talking about the goals he scored when he started...
