Daily Mirror Apologises To Bendtner

You may remember on February 17th this year, I wrote an article expressing outrage at the Daily Mirror's horrible misquoting of Nicklas Bendtner. Well it seems the Bendtner camp were similarly miffed, as today that most august of journals was forced into a humiliating climbdown.

Just Like Scarlett And Bill
Readers who a) regularly visit this page and b) can remember back as far as February, will recall that Mediawatch took The Daily Mirror to task over their 'misinterpretation' of some quotes from Nicklas Bendtner.

Just to refresh your memories, here is the way the paper reported his words on February 16: 'I should start every game, I should be playing every minute of every match and always be in the team.'

And here's how Mediawatch's Babelfish aided translation differed: 'I still believe that when I play to my best, I will play from the start no matter who is ready or injured and each time I try to show that I should play from the start.'

Therefore, we were delighted to read in this morning's edition of the paper, the following:

'On 16 February, under the headline: 'Big 'Ead Bendtner', we quoted Nicklas Bendtner from an interview given to a Danish newspaper as saying: 'I should start every game, I should be playing every minute of every match and always be in the team.'

'Nicklas Bendtner actually said: 'I constantly belive that when I am in my best playing form then I should play from the start, whoever is ready or injured.'

'We are happy to make this clear and regret any misunderstanding.'

Worth recounting here because I know a great many Arsenal fans who dislike Bendtner have used the original story as a stick to beat him with. Doubtless this apology will not be widely reported and where it is reported, it would likely be ignored by those with an anti Bendtner agenda. Particularly the guy that sits four rows behind me at home games. Yes you sir, see the above, not true. Now try supporting the lad, he's shown he is more than capable. More often than not he shows it best when he hasn't got idiots on his back all the time- away from home.LD.

i personally felt that i couldnt care less about what Nick was supposed to say...coz even if he did say those words, and was even more big headed,i still would believe that half the time he cant even finish his dinner let alone put the ball in the net,i dont doubt his ability or potential though,i just want him to convert his chances

good on the bendtner family for standing against these morons. still, it'll be written in tiny font and it wont spread round the news networks quite like the original story did.

The correction will be quickly forgotten and but you can bet that the original misquote will live on forever with those determined to see only the negatives.

fran, I think you should calm down a bit about Bendtner. Have you seen the bad finishes from the rest of the players in the Premier League? He is 21 and has put in some brilliant performances this year.

Good spot LD. Funny hjow this hasnt gained too much attention, even from other arsenal blogs. There were a few that reported Bendtner's correct comments. As for Bendtner, he certainly was arrogant, but I believe that he has pegged back a notch in the past season, in a good way. I'm continually impressed with his attitude, to work for the team. More of the same pls, Nicky, just make sure your finishing improves with time.

Looks like it will be a phased takeover by Kroenke, rather than a one-off purchase. The signs have always been there, and there is no better time for Kroenke to buy in (from his perspective) as liquidity is tight in todays world and anyone with money can strike a good bargain.

What is shocking about this is the revelation that the Mirror relies entirely on the online babel for their translations -- actually, it shouldn't shock me, as it just proves my belief in the English media's lazy translation policy of foreign media interviews with football players.

Actually jaelle, if you lift Bendtner's words straight from the Danish article and put them into babel, you still don't get anything approaching what was printed. The reason they had to apologise was because they went beyond doctoring his words or taking them out of context. They just plain made them up.
