Hansen On Arsenal Pressure To Win Trophies

Alan Hansen, pundit for the New Football Pools on the pressure for Arsenal to win trophies.

'No one can question the quality of Arsene Wenger`s Arsenal team but after their FA Cup semi-final defeat to Chelsea another trophy-less season could be on the cards.

For a team like Arsenal with fans that are used to winning trophies on a regular basis a barren run adds to the pressure on the players at the club. It`s a young team but 4 years without silverware can soon become 5 or 6 years and the pressure then begins to build.

Of course Arsene has a very young team and the experience they have gained can only improve them as players. On their day, they play arguably the best football in the Premier League. However, a club the size of Arsenal should be winning trophies so Arsene needs to strike a balance between nurturing his young side and picking up silverware.

The return of the Gunners big stars from injury will improve their performance but a two-legged Champions League semi with Manchester United doesn`t guarantee a final appearance. Hence, defeat to Chelsea in the FA Cup will be a big blow.

Arsenal definitely have a chance against United as Sir Alex`s side aren`t at their best but with the Champions League the only trophy left that the Gunners can win, the pressure on their young players to end their barren run increases.'

Why is it that when Liverpool go thru a barren run of trophies, they never get this kind of article? Their last trophy was, I believe, in 2006. They won't win anything this season either. Will we start seeing articles like this about them?

I hate him so much and whats this about arsenal " On their day, play arguably the best football in the Premier League" on our day there is no team in the prem tat can touch us. The only team in the world that can get close to us on our day is barca. The only problem is our defence at the moment we need another quality centreback. With Gallas out at the moment and Toure not playin his best football since he was hit with malaria (not that i am saying by any means that is his fault). I just hope he can recapture his form that made him be regarded as one of the top defenders in the world. I have been amazed with how well Gibbs has done since he has come into the first team. But saying that Clichy boots are hard to fill so hopefully we can have him back soon as well. Then once we have a top class centreback and our first choice left back again i think we will be challeneging for honours left right and centre. Then lets see what hanson has got to say for himself

I dont like any of the MOTD Liverpool guys either, but like shewore said its all true. We need to win a trophy this year or certainly next. Big players want trophies and we cant afford for our best players to go elsewhere.

Oh get a grip. We were one match from winning the Premiership last year and we were European runners-up as recently as 2006. Hardly no-man's land. Chelski won nowt last year either and they're going to win nothing this year. Barca and Everton will burst that particuliar bubble. And Pool haven't won a league title in 19 years. I recall United going through a few barren seasons not too long ago. Only Arsenal is subjected to this hysterical bitter rubbish. Any fan who agrees with it belongs to the lunatic "Oh let's have a new manager every year" brigade. Grow up.

Julie - where is there a 'no man's land' quoted in there? And one match? You talking about the one match in February yeah? With well over 2 months left of the season? It's that exact arrogance that is portrayed on the pitch at times by our players who think we have a right to win trophies which will cost us. Oh, and thanks for pigeonholing me in in the 'Arsene out' brigade, actually, do they even exist? Apart from the realms of the blogosphere...??

I think Liverpool will have the same things written about them this year, United certainly had those things written about them in the two years they failed to win anything. We only focus on our own clubs in the media so we just don't see it. Besides, even if we did get a rough deal from pundits and journos, who cares? What does it matter? The pigeon holing of supporters is probably the most frustrating thing about the 21st century football fan, people are allowed to have opinions without being slotted neatly into convenient boxes. I don't like Hansen particularly but I don't think there's anything hysterical or bitter there at all, in fact, I read it and thought "and.....?" Hardly revelatory stuff he's saying.

Exactly, this whole internet thing p1sses me off. Here i have some poster who loves Henry forever telling me to grow up and that i obviously want Arsene out. I'm sure half the posters on these sites only became 'fans' after '98 anyway.

You cant paint every supporter who has a different oppinion than your own with the same brush Julie. I Support Arsenal through and through and wouldnt change much at all. I would not get rid of the manager ever. I still think however that to keep your top players you need trophies, because otherwise their head will be turned to teams that do win them. The sooner we win won, the less pressure on the team to win them. I think once we win one trophy we will go on to win many over a 5-10 year period

I can't say for anyone else. The thing I have with Alan Hansen is that he doesn't offer much useful insight into the game. Like this article, he's saying nothing worth writing in the first place. I went "So?" at the end. As the Americans say, "Duh!" It's the lack of quality analysis that I have an issue with, more so than the alleged bias against Arsenal which I honestly don't care as I'm not paying the licence fee to these guys on the BBC anymore. It's just a waste of cyberspace and someone's money somewhere.

As a Chelsea supporter you can believe I hold no bias when I say this: Arsenal would have a legitimate shot at the title were injuries not such a constant problem. Your defense is in shambles due to injuries. Fabregas isn't 100%. Rosicky--is he even still an Arsenal player? Adebayor and Van Persie can't play a single month without hurting themselves. I'm sure I'm forgetting a few, but the point is that you need consistency to win trophies and with so many players in and out due to injury, how can you ever gain consistency?

Answer to that is a fair slice of luck, Arsene can't manage large squads.

We have also got cra**y schedule. Not looking for excuses, but we played Villareal Wednesday with Chelsea on the saturday. Chelsea have an extra days rest which at that level makes a difference. Now we play sunday before playing Man United, yet they play Satruday. You will be amazed at how far an extra days rest goes.
