Chin Up Gibbsy, You've Done Alright

As I sit drowning in ale from the inside, I can't help but feel nothing but sympathy for Arsenal youngster, Kieran Gibbs.

Here is a young man thrust into the fray through injuries and sheer bad luck of this Arsenal squad, a player plunged into the deep end and asked to perform the duties of a seasoned professional when he's still just a boy.

I recently made a claim for Kieran Gibbs to be voted Arsenal player of the month, and I still stand by that decision, I have nothing but the utmost respect for a young player trying to make his mark on the game on such a big stage for such a traditional club, and he has performed admirably.

Kieran may well be doing the exact same as many Gooners, myself included, sitting in a darkened room sinking a couple more beers before hitting the hay, drowning his sorrows after an unfortunate slip led to United's opening goal that effectively killed off the tie.

I was sure Gibbs was about to burst into tears as he held his head in his hands, as I almost did myself. I wasn't massively distraught at the thought of going out of the CL, as as soon as the ball hit the onion bag I knew the game was up, instead I was feeling great sorrow for this young player as I've seen such things break many a player in the past.

So I'd like to take the opportunity to let this fabulous young talent know that not one Arsenal fan holds him accountable, and urge him not to look upon this event as a negative, more as a right of passage, a journey travelled by all the greats, a moment of complete despair for you to draw upon further down the line in your career.

So chin up Gibbsy, we still love you :)

Is it me or if he was a foreign youngster, we wouldnt be so charitable. Did we say chin up to song when he made mistakes against fulham. To be fair gibbs has done well. But i really felt that people were praising him just cos he's an english youngster. He had a poor game in the first leg and people were somehow saying how well he performed. I think he's a great prospect, but if we'r going to coddle him just cos he's english is just not right

I totally agree Rocky. He slipped, they scored, he was despondent. I am sure he wasn't punished for the accident but Wenger talked to him at the half and decided he was too shaken up to continue. Gibbs probably feels he let the team down but he shouldn't. A more experienced player would have shaken it off, but he's 19. He's one for the future, no doubt. He cares about the team. Most players do, although I'm not so sure about Adebayor. The best thing to do now is start him against Chelsea on Sunday.

Exactly, exactly! I'm with Rocky and Elbondo, it's purely unfortunate - not a Senderos moment - cos it's not even a mistake. It's just an accident that he slipped up in that nanosecond in that position. But the Senderos thing creeps in cos he's so young and the boss was right to spare him the torture of staying on the pitch. That's part of the learning curve which I think the boy has the intelligence and character to grow out of. And OMC, I can't say for others, I'm not English and wasn't one that crucified Song/Eboue though criticisms were made but the thought of blaming Kieran has never crossed my mind and English or not has never come into it for me. In fact like Rocky I admire every single little kid Arsene has deemed good enough to send out in the Arsenal shirt cos I can imagine how tough it is for teenagers to just stand in front of 60,000 people, let alone to perform against Ronaldo and Rooney on such a big stage. That's why last night I left a quick comment on Gibbsy's facebook page (run by some fan I guess), as many other Gooners did. I'll say it again: Kieran you've been excellent and very brave this whole season. Chin up, keep improving and you'll make it!

Yeah, Gibbs looked totally down, after his mistake. Due to our lack of depth in our squad, Gibbs was thrown into the deep end. I agree with elbondo, Gibbs should start the Chelski game, as I don't want him to go the Sendros way. Good point supersof, there does seem to be alot of our players slipping over recent, so maybe they do need to change their footwear. On the way back from watching the match at the pub, I stop and had a chat with a fellow Gooner, and he said "We win as a team and We lose as a Team" something that needs to be told to young Kieran Gibbs.

I feel sorry for Gibbs, he looked as shattered as I've seen a footballer for a long time, but the game was still disgraceful. Gibbs happens to be a symptom of the problem, not the cause, but it would be near impossible to argue that his inexperience was not openly on show here. Different season, same old problems. Lack of experience costs us - Gibbs slip. Lack of a top class GK costs us - Almunia still culpable for the 2nd goal, again at his NEAR POST!!! Lack of depth cost us - using Eboue as a left back, using Walcott as a right wing, using Silvestre at all. Wenger needs to learn this summer that we live in a different footballing world to the one he grew up in and throw a bit of cash around or we're going to continue to slip further and further from the United's and Chelsea's and closer and closer to the Villa's and Everton's. It's an unavoidable fact now, when players like Song (who has been exceptional for most of the second half of the season) are exposed for the second rate footballers they really are over 180 minutes against a team that are in reality just on another level.

I was nearly in tears for young Gibbs and more so when RVP came over and put his arms around the young lad; that gentlemen and ladies is what this club is all about. If you dont like it then pxss off. There's three games to go lets get on with it and show them all. It was not our time last night but tomorrows a new day. Good luck to Manure they deserved to win, but watch wait and see, WE Will Be Back and next time it will be our turn. Go you Gunners.

no your misunderstanding me.....i'm not having a go at gibbs...i think he's done well and it is difficult to ask of a 18 year old to defend against ronaldo no matter where he is from. Defending is a alot different from attacking,,,where young prodigies can do well upfront it is very rare for youngsters to establish themselves at the back so young. I think he will bounce back personally

There were a number of deluded gooners on the spurs site the other day claiming how good walcott was and how lennon is not as good. But, i would just like to point out that walcott is nowhere near as good as lennon. Everytime we play against united, Lennon always skins evra. He beats evra time and time again . Every time lennon gets the ball, something will certainly happen. But Walcott ,even when he gets the ball , does not take on the left back which is appalling for a guy of his pace. Walcott will improve as he has a year and a half on lennon but there is no doubt who the better player is at this moment.

Kieran Gibbs is an amazing talent and has shown in the recent past that he has what it takes to play at the very highest level. Apart from talent he has confidence, guts, pace and a very good work ethic. He must put this unfortunate accident behind him, in the past where it belongs and look to the future - as must the rest of the team. We lost a match we would like to have won but it isn't the end of the world and there will be many other opportunities for this still young and relatively inexperienced team. Come on Arsenal!

Lennon has as many assists as Eboue this season YFI. As for Gibbs, it was an accident, not a mistake. I didn't think at the time he had been taken off because of his mental state, I felt it was more because Eboue had a blinder on Saturday and is by and large more attacking. I don't know, but Gibbs shouldn't feel bad, it was an accident and there's no legislating for it.

Another trophyless season at the library, Arshavin wondering what the hell he's walked into, yet another lot of players heading for better clubs, (and I thought it was embarrassing them putting 4 + Webb past us in the theatre of fixes, but 3 in your garden including one from nearly inside the dressing room, tut, tut, tut) THERE IS A GOD...... Still .................... maybe next year a !!

Grapes26 - Where did your team first start playing games 100+ years ago? Know your own team before you slate others, you obnoxious little muppet! I have no problems with the Spuds gloating, they take more enjoyment in us losing than they do in their own team winning. I know, neither happen very often, LOL, but it does say an awful lot about your midtable club. As for the Bentley goal, wow 15 million for a one game wonder, i'll bet you are all so pleased with the sound way your midtable team is run, fiscally.

People like BMF spend moe time in the spurs site rather than the asenal one.So it is only fair that we repay the compliment. It is not only that, whatever is written about tottenham in the pappers or whenever a player is linked to us, atleast 10 or so gonner fans start insulting tottenham and their fans. What does that make your club then?

while envious spuds who gloat at our failures (that is top 4 in Europe and top 4 in England) do brighten up my days, I want to go back to what OMC said at the beginning re: Gibbs vs. Song debate. I feel for Gibbs just as I felt for Song at that Fulham game and just as I felt for Eboue and NickyB when they went through their stinky patches. Song was about 3 years younger than today, Eboue had just returned from an injury and was having an off-day and Bendtner was and is still going through his first season of major appearance numbers. I wish all players would get the support they deserve when going through rough times just like Gibbs is getting it now. What doesn't break you will only make you stronger. Cue Arsenal FC.

Every Spud fan that has "contributed" to this thread, don't feel you have to admit it on this forum, but just sit back and think to yourself now, who has knocked us out of the CL for each of the last three years? Did you think about it? Did it take you less than ten seconds to reel those names off? Course it did, that's what it is to peer on jealously from our shadow.
