Chin Up Gibbsy, You've Done Alright

Chin Up Gibbsy, You've Done Alright

As I sit drowning in ale from the inside, I can't help but feel nothing but sympathy for Arsenal youngster, Kieran Gibbs.

Here is a young man thrust into the fray through injuries and sheer bad luck of this Arsenal squad, a player plunged into the deep end and asked to perform the duties of a seasoned professional when he's still just a boy.

I recently made a claim for Kieran Gibbs to be voted Arsenal player of the month, and I still stand by that decision, I have nothing but the utmost respect for a young player trying to make his mark on the game on such a big stage for such a traditional club, and he has performed admirably.

Kieran may well be doing the exact same as many Gooners, myself included, sitting in a darkened room sinking a couple more beers before hitting the hay, drowning his sorrows after an unfortunate slip led to United's opening goal that effectively killed off the tie.

I was sure Gibbs was about to burst into tears as he held his head in his hands, as I almost did myself. I wasn't massively distraught at the thought of going out of the CL, as as soon as the ball hit the onion bag I knew the game was up, instead I was feeling great sorrow for this young player as I've seen such things break many a player in the past.

So I'd like to take the opportunity to let this fabulous young talent know that not one Arsenal fan holds him accountable, and urge him not to look upon this event as a negative, more as a right of passage, a journey travelled by all the greats, a moment of complete despair for you to draw upon further down the line in your career.

So chin up Gibbsy, we still love you :)

Is it me or if he was a foreign youngster, we wouldnt be so charitable. Did we say chin up to song when he made mistakes against fulham. To be fair gibbs has done well. But i really felt that people were praising him just cos he's an english youngster. He had a poor game in the first leg and people were somehow saying how well he performed. I think he's a great prospect, but if we'r going to coddle him just cos he's english is just not right

I totally agree Rocky. He slipped, they scored, he was despondent. I am sure he wasn't punished for the accident but Wenger talked to him at the half and decided he was too shaken up to continue. Gibbs probably feels he let the team down but he shouldn't. A more experienced player would have shaken it off, but he's 19. He's one for the future, no doubt. He cares about the team. Most players do, although I'm not so sure about Adebayor. The best thing to do now is start him against Chelsea on Sunday.

gibbs, english or not, has done well for us FILLING in for clichy. tonite he was just very unlucky. besides the slip i thought he did okay. a few of our players slipped over tonite, and in previous games too. maybe a look at our footwear is required.

Exactly, exactly! I'm with Rocky and Elbondo, it's purely unfortunate - not a Senderos moment - cos it's not even a mistake. It's just an accident that he slipped up in that nanosecond in that position. But the Senderos thing creeps in cos he's so young and the boss was right to spare him the torture of staying on the pitch. That's part of the learning curve which I think the boy has the intelligence and character to grow out of. And OMC, I can't say for others, I'm not English and wasn't one that crucified Song/Eboue though criticisms were made but the thought of blaming Kieran has never crossed my mind and English or not has never come into it for me. In fact like Rocky I admire every single little kid Arsene has deemed good enough to send out in the Arsenal shirt cos I can imagine how tough it is for teenagers to just stand in front of 60,000 people, let alone to perform against Ronaldo and Rooney on such a big stage. That's why last night I left a quick comment on Gibbsy's facebook page (run by some fan I guess), as many other Gooners did. I'll say it again: Kieran you've been excellent and very brave this whole season. Chin up, keep improving and you'll make it!
