Wenger Not Backed By Board Member Claims Adams

Arsenal legend, Tony Adams claims Arsenal gaffer, Arsene Wenger does not have the full backing of the board, stating there is one member not giving the gaffer his support.

It's often debated on how much money Arsenal actually have to give to Wenger to strengthen his side given that year after year Peter Hill-Wood tells us if Arsene wanted to spend 30M on a player then he could, yet spends relatively little, but Tony Adams claims that is not the case.

'People on the board - and the fans - want more, but they can't actually back it up with financial weight to do it. They're not financing him. I don't think Arsenal have got any finance.' said the former Gunners centre back

'I don't know who it is, but I think there's someone on the board who's not pro-Arsene. I don't know who it is, but that's what I've heard.'

'The fans have got very high standards now. I remember when I first broke into the team, losing 4-0 at Maine Road and the fans were doing the conga. They didn't expect much, but they expect a lot now. They're crying out for experience and the fans are not silly, they know the team needs experience at the back and in central midfield.'

'Arsene knows, too. He's not a silly man. But you tell me a player they can get for the money they've got. It's unrealistic.'

Why does every former Arsenal player feel the need to say things like this? I wouldn't mind if it were someone who hated the club, but massive Arsenal legends always feel the need to say things that do us no favours. I realise they're probably just answering questions, but it drives me nuts sometimes ..... especially when it appears to be just idle speculation.

Adams has always liked the sound of his own voice. Even if it is often self-indulgent tosh. Wenger has said himself we will look to bring one or two experienced players in and that we don't need strikers so much of it is just stating the obvious. I can't think of one current board member who doesn't support Wenger unless it's one of the inconsequentials, Sir Chips Keswick or Lord Harris perhaps. Fact is Arsenal spent 36m+ on transfers over last season so at least those backing him are getting their way it appears.

I don't think it changes anything with regards to this article ... infact it seems to reinforce the fact that Tony likes speaking too much. Why is he talking to the press about players he's watching for Arsenal? Didn't he get sh** canned as a scout by Wenger before for doing the exact same thing?
Rocky7
I'm a bit worried about Adams, his bizarre claim that he had been approached for the Celtic job, which has been very flatly denied by all involved at Parkhead and now this unsubstantiated claim. He even says he doesn't know who it is that's supposedly not backing the manager, he doesn't know how much money we have, if he really has that much of an inside track, shouldn't he know these things? I'm genuinely worried the guy is losing it.

You guys seen this? Interesting. http://www.arsenal.com/news/news-archive/nasri-i-see-myself-in-defensive-midfield

TA has always loved to have a good waffle into amicrophone, although most of it generally rubbish.
LondonGooner
LD, I've often thought that when seeing him on TV interviews. It's a bit worrying because he seems to be getting worse too.
flv
It could work to our advantage - all this "No Money, no support" etc. Arsene won't have to pay over the odds for a player he wants.
sunaadh
Given that he doesn't actually know how much money Arsene has to spend, the comment "tell me a player they can get for the money they've got" is nonsensical. And saying one board member doesn't back Arsene but he doesn't know who? Another non-statement. I think the guy is taking reality lessons from Phil Brown.

Nasri at DM could be fantastic in my opinion.
Tom14
The thing that struck me about the Mirror piece on Adams with these quotes is that it mentioned he's now doing scouting work for Arsenal since being fired from Pompey. Since when did that happen???
jaelle
I hope he hasn't fallen off the wagon. Seriously - although some of the stuff he has said (in this and other interviews) echoes what the fans and the rest of the world think, to say he's guaranteed a 50% chance of winning something by going to Celtic is just setting himself up. Nasri at DM sounded interesting to me too ... for about 2secs. I suspect that he and Fab4 want to play the Xavi-Iniesta axis for Arsenal (great! if you have a whopping great monster chopping at people sitting behind you in front of the back 4). On another note - spurious and scurrilous rumours are abound that we have signed Thomas Varmaelen from Ajax (despite TA's recommendation not to do so, and he cited he didn't think Arsenal fans would like another 'small one' - so I decided to check out Wiki on the young Belgian - guess what ?! he is 8ft 5 inches according to the infallable Wiki !! small one indeed !, lets see Rio and Vidic deal with corners now !) hehe. Hopefully someone will correct it soon..
Englishman-in-NY
That was a joke by a reader of another blog because we were discussing his height and I said i could change it if I wanted, it suddenly went up.
Tom14
TA's just not very media-savvy and not doing us any favour (well except that he's reinforcing the image that we're frugal and not driving prices up in terms of transfers), is he? :/ The more I think about things he's done, the less optimistic I feel about the possibility of him ever managing Arsenal tbph.
GoonerLou
It would be a disaster of biblical proportions if this man ever managed the Arsenal.
Passenal
He will never manage us.
Tom14
He actually discussed that on the radio interview saying he will give up in about 10 years.
Tom14
9yrs, 364days to go... What's the chance Tom14 didn't actually change the height by too much and he's really as tall as Kareem Abdul Jabar + afro ?
Englishman-in-NY
Bould, Dixon, Keown are sensible ex-pros that represent our club well...........Wright, Adams, Merson & Parlour are an absolute embarrasment to the club..I cringe everytime they open their mouths.
Orange Quadrant
I like big Tony. I liked him as a player and I like and respect him as a man but he doesn't give good interviews. He is always struggling to find the words to express what he has to say and usually ends up saying something fairly nonsensical. I suspect the fact that he cannot express himself very well is one of the reasons he is struggling as a manager. I can't see him ever managing Arsenal.
norfolk dumpling
No one will give Tony any credence, he's been chattering away like a loony recently.
Moorish
leave adams alone, he has earnt his right to an opinion about HIS club
KingGunner
orange quadrant, the guys you call "embarrasment to the club" were playing there hearts out literally for the club, they have jobs to do where they have to try to be neutral. The truth does hurt in some cases.
KingGunner
Adams seems to be courting the media at the moment, maybe he should be more focus on getting himself another job in Management.
