Bergkamp Scores Arsenal's Greatest Goal Ever

All summer has been counting down the best 50 goals scored by the Gunners. It has been a treat to watch throughout the summer, and the order of the 50 has sparked some good debate. But the top three was always going to be pretty clear. This is how they went:

3. van Persie's leaping volley against Charlton in 2006
2. Henry's turn and volley versus United in 2000
1. Dennis Bergkamp's magic spin against Newcastle

Here is a clip of the greatest Arsenal goal ever courtesy of the Iceman, Dennis Bergkamp. (Apologies about the quality. YouTube has shut down most of the best videos)

Brilliant. Honestly, with your back to goal and a defender right on, who would think of THAT?!?

I certainly can't think of better. I'd have probably had Bergkamp's goal against Leicester at number 2. A shame there isn't any footage of the team of the 30s, I bet they scored some corkers in their time.

Just a beautiful piece of football. I love the way that the 3 legendary players involved are doing exactly what they are remembered most for. PV4 winning it back, passing it on and driving forward; DB10 calmly spraying a ball to RP7 and making a great run on the blind side of Newcastle's defence; RP7 holding it up play waiting for options whilst still driving forward, before playing it through to DB10; and DB10... well... doing that!
I still say Henry's backheel against Charlton was my favourite, for sheer audacity and determination. In the circumstances, with his back to goal and defenders all over him, he had no right to score. Fantastic. Will tell my grandchildren about it.
I probably would have van Persie's volley at number two. The leap and control leaves me speechless every time. His right foot is up by the defender's head!
I can't argue against Bergy's goal vs Newcastle being voted the greatest goal of all time nevermind just for Arsenal. You just can't do things like that, it's not possible.
For me TH14's goal at Highbury against Spuds is the best goal. However, DB10 is imo, THE greatest Arsenal player ever.
I always find it strange when these greatest ever polls are announced that no-one can seem to remember longer then the last 10 years. Having said that the Bergkamp goal was a bit special. Can'e believe that Van Persis shin got number 3...
I hate to over-use the word 'genius' but you just know it when you see one.
The speed of thought allied to the ability to pull it off is what is extrodinary about this goal, its number 1 for me.
Eduardo's against brunley for me, but Bergie's is a very close second.
Phartman - I can remember almost every Arsenal goal I've seen since I started watching us playing in 1987, I've seen many hours of footage of Arsenal that was before my time, and nothing compares to Dennis' piece of magic.
The beauty of this goal is seen when you put yourself in his position at that moment. If you've played football, just imagine, you've got your back to goal with a solid and in position back four in place and a defender up your arse and your team mate drills the ball at you. You try your best to hold it up and shunt it out to the winger. At what point does your mind think, "Hold on! If I just flick the ball in a curving motion using the outside of my instep and pirouhette around the defender, I might have a chance here." in the space of about 0.002 seconds?

Sorry CockneyRich, just CANNOT agree. Thierry (and his 226 goals) was the living embodiment of Arsenal for me. Admired Bergkamp greatly but when I think of him, it's always in a Holland shirt first. Whereas with TH, it's cutting in from the left in the red-and-white of Arsenal (and Arsene watching on with fond indulgence from the touchline.) It's a fantastic goal but other ones of Thierry carry more sentimental weight for me.
Top choice for a Top Goal from a Top Player! DB10 was a true Legend of The Arsenal!
I've watched this goal so many times and it never ceases too amaze, pure brilliance. I hope you all actually play the game to realize what he has actually done here.
i like how impartial you are julieloveshenry4ever lol I think the order is about right, Van Persies was a stunner, Bergkamp had to win and it was one of a couple from terry henry to fill the top three. Miss them both ):
I miss them both too! We already have a new dutch legend in the making who has shown true dedication to our club signing a new contract. We need an Henry the Second!
I particularly miss DB10. He done things with the ball that most footballers can only dream about. His passing and movement lit many a game up for me, and most of his goals were sublime. Add to that the way that he conducted himself as a pro footballer, only spoke to AW direct and never thru an Agent or the media, never courted other clubs for a move, never quibbled over his contract and loved playing for the Arsenal. I really feel that in the modern day game, we may never see his like again.
My favourite arsenal player of all time - genius with the ball. Very few could have thought of that move,a nd actually executed that. Deserves its place as No.1
ITV commentator really doesn't do it justice...
The commentator did better than I would have done in his place. When I saw it live, I just sat on my couch and stared at the screen lol
gunnerkid, that what the commentator should of done! He danced with the ball and then take it back to home! Great wouldnt do justice to the goal greatest goal for arsenal by the greatest arsenal player

I saw this goal on a sports update over in Australia - where they shunt the best PL goals on at the end of the weekend's aussie rules and rugby. I had seen probably 2 or 3 games in their entirety before that point and knew little about Bergkamp and Arsenal. But I remember saying to others that this was a special goal. The improvisation and audacity are eye catching and the finish is so calm that it was surprising to hear Dennis say afterwards that it was entirely improvised.
Some people just "have it" and DB was absolutely one of those people. First touch was second to none. I don't think he scored a boring goal in his career?
its a shame he was really one of us
yid kid
Bergkamp was a class act and at his peak was as good as anything in Europe today. It's just a pity legs have to grow weary and lungs need a rest.
