Arsenal - Gazidis Reaches Out To Fans

Arsenal - Gazidis Reaches Out To Fans

Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis says it's time for the Gunners to deliver.

The South African, English American has impressed mightily in his first season at Arsenal, possessing an uncanny ability to say the right things at the right times and seemingly having the same views as the fans (or having the knack of telling us exactly what we want to hear).

Now, the former MLS bigwig claims the time for has come for the undoubted potential to bare some fruit.

In a statement that many claim is a warning to Arsene Wenger, Gazidis said, 'It's absolutely our ambition to win a trophy this year. I couldn't be more clear on that,' he said in the Daily Star Sunday. Second, third or fourth isn't good enough. We want to win something this season and we believe we have the squad to do that.'

'We have created and developed a team playing fantastic football, It's wonderful to watch and very exciting at times. We've spoken about the group's potential. Now, and by now I mean this season, it's very important for us to focus strongly on winning something for the fans. They deserve it.'

'We can talk about football as a business but, fundamentally, this club exists for the fans and they don't care about financial reports, they care about what happens on the pitch.'

I don't really see that as a warning to Wenger, infact it reads like a mission statement, a team talk, words of inspiration to appease the fans and let them know that we're not going to sit back and become known as a 4th place team. And that's a good thing.

I think it comes as no coincidence that the arrival of Gazidis also comes at a time where Arsenal Football Club are looking to improve the relations with the fans, and this latest statement only serves to strengthen that relationship further.

I guess it's the sort of reassuring stuff that fans do need to be fed sometimes. Especially if the business side is going well. Does it suggest that we weren't focussed on winning trophies before then? Not that it is a warning to Wenger but if it is I bet he is quaking in his boots - while Florentino Perez is wondering whether he should give him a ring.

Lol its hilarious how the media has twisted Ivan's words and made it sound as if he is warning Wenger - deliver or you're out.

Arsenal is probably the only club in the world right now that is forced to fight a spin war and reassure supporters one week after announcing record profits.

Ivan's views and expectations are no different to Wenger's; it is time to turn the potential to Trophies. I see a Clint Eastwood type look in Wenger's eyes this season, I can almost taste a trophy this time around. I won't regard the insinuations of the spin Docs in the Press when it concerns Arsenal.

How is this different from what Wenger has been saying? Its pretty much the same message, but Gazidis knows how to play the game. Its funny how the rags have interpreted it, but not surprising, on slow news days.

Sorry, this is off topic, but could someone reassure me that Cesc’s trip to Barcelona for a “serious family issue” isn’t a great excuse to allow him to discuss a transfer with Barcelona sporting director Txiki Begiristain this January.

I think he is deffo signing for barca because he has it in his blood like for real.

I doubt the Spanish national team- or anyone else for that matter- would look too kindly on him pretending his Grandfather was on death's door to discuss money with Barcelona, without Arsenal's permission to boot. That would make him a kind of weird hybrid between Cashley Cole and Stephen Ireland!

This is classic conspiracy theory. Come on guys, Cesc deserves every benefit of doubt he can get from us. He's earned it.

Sir Henry, Cesc's grandfather is seriously ill, his whole family has gathered together for what might be his last days. LD: "Arsenal is probably the only club in the world right now that is forced to fight a spin war and reassure supporters one week after announcing record profits." -- It's also the only club in the world that constantly has to answer to taunts and persistent media reminders that we haven't won anything in 3, now 4 seasons and that it's time the manager delivers. It's like we're the ONLY team in England and Europe that hasn't won anything in 4 seasons. Liverpool's last trophy was in 2006, but they never get the same treatment. It's a backhanded compliment, in a way, because it's as if Liverpool aren't expected to keep up with Chelsea/Utd in winning trophies while we are. Re Gazidis: I've also read that he may have finally succeeded in changing AW's mind about traveling to the US or Asia in pre-season.
