Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis says it's time for the Gunners to deliver.
The South African, English American has impressed mightily in his first season at Arsenal, possessing an uncanny ability to say the right things at the right times and seemingly having the same views as the fans (or having the knack of telling us exactly what we want to hear).
Now, the former MLS bigwig claims the time for has come for the undoubted potential to bare some fruit.
In a statement that many claim is a warning to Arsene Wenger, Gazidis said, 'It's absolutely our ambition to win a trophy this year. I couldn't be more clear on that,' he said in the Daily Star Sunday. Second, third or fourth isn't good enough. We want to win something this season and we believe we have the squad to do that.'
'We have created and developed a team playing fantastic football, It's wonderful to watch and very exciting at times. We've spoken about the group's potential. Now, and by now I mean this season, it's very important for us to focus strongly on winning something for the fans. They deserve it.'
'We can talk about football as a business but, fundamentally, this club exists for the fans and they don't care about financial reports, they care about what happens on the pitch.'
I don't really see that as a warning to Wenger, infact it reads like a mission statement, a team talk, words of inspiration to appease the fans and let them know that we're not going to sit back and become known as a 4th place team. And that's a good thing.
I think it comes as no coincidence that the arrival of Gazidis also comes at a time where Arsenal Football Club are looking to improve the relations with the fans, and this latest statement only serves to strengthen that relationship further.
