Wenger not looking for a stop gap signing

Wenger says it is possible he will sign a player in the January transfer window if the right player comes along. "If the right player turns up we will do it" he told the audience tuned into his live webchat on the Arsenal website. "I understand it is a very interesting subject for our fans" he accepted.

The qualities Wenger is looking for in a striker are firstly technique: "Because it is very important to integrate into our game that you have a very good technical level" secondly intelligence: "Intelligence of movement and awareness around the box" and third, commitment. These are three important ingredients the Arsenal manager says he requires.

Arsene also said that he would consider a player that had already played in European competition though it would disqualify him from taking part in Champions League games. Though he would prefer that they are available for all competitions he feels that as the club are also going for the domestic trophies it allows the opportunity to rest players for the different competitions.

But the manager isn`t looking for a stop gap "It would mean that he [new signing] has the quality to play for the long term for Arsenal Football Club" he claimed.

Wenger also confirmed that Theo was the fastest player in the current squad swiftly (of course!) followed by Vela and Traore. Walcott had earlier revealed that he had broken Henry's 40m record which Wenger revealed was 'around' 4.82 seconds while Theo managed 4.72 seconds. "He could have been a 100 metre runner" asserted le Boss adding that Vela was not too far behind him.

lennon would nail it in 4.5!!!lol

Well, there you go. Now, this opens the doors to every manner of speculation in the press and blogs; at least, the choices will be fewer, since the prospective buy has to be young and technically gifted, to qualify as a long term signing. By the way, I would think Clichy should be up there with the fastest Arsenal players.
Naijagunner
nah i think walcott is quicker than lennon

Everyone should read this absolutely WONDERFUL article by John Cross about our priceless, brilliant manager: http://www.mirrorfootball.co.uk/opinion/blogs/mirror-football-blog/My-decade-with-Arsenal-by-John-Cross-article265137.html

lets hope he unearths another gem! last time around he snapped up arshavin :) as for theo breaking henry's record, its a different matter when you include a football into the equation. then henry leaves theo for dead im afraid.

I dont know why Wenger talks about the transfer window. I've gotten used to him doing the business quietly. He's been talking about signing someone, not signing someone, CL tied, not CL tied - a bit too much for my liking.

Wenger talks about the transfer window (and most other things) because others ask for his opinion. A webchat would be a pretty dull affair without any chat.
Amos.
Just buy a tall holding midfielder and be done with it. Song is playing really well, but we need depth in this position and strong physcial spine to the team. With the title challengers so inconsistent this year, we may only be one or two signings away from winning the league. I'd bet they don't come, but that's Arsenal politics for you. Many fans won't be betting for reasons relating to European politics http://cli.gs/T3Wvt8
Travers
I was thinking of a good question to ask him but couldnt think of anything i didnt already know his answer to. In the end i asked who he most regretted missing out on signing and why he didnt sigg them.

I wonder who'd be the quickest player in the prem league? Over here ('here' being Australia) at the "Grand Final" of every season, they do a competition where every team can nominate there fastest player and the race happens at half time. It's pretty cool, more like a novelty thing, but it is interesting.

I agree we need strengthen the team with good holding experienced midfielder and possibly a strong frontline striker given RVP's absence. Can it really hurt to have these options going into the second half of the season? What else are we doing with the 40 odd million we scoped from the sale of Adeybarndoor and Kolo? The arguments about this not being a stop-gap solution is just smoke and mirrors from Wenger. Teams have to be big enough and diverse enough to adapt, or they fail. We need a commanding presence up front now..not next year. Bendtner, Eduardo and Vela are each wanting in their own way. I'm sure Wenger sees this.

a nice winger would do nicely
leeimp95
1 CF. 1 CB. + 1 CDM on loan. Would make my day.
Sajit
Messi, Ibrahimovic, Iniesta and Melo would be nice
paul_ownz
Oh i forgot Bufon
paul_ownz
Buffon has been worse than Almunia this season.
Tom14
Melo's been a bit of a flop at Juve also after a reasonable start.

Who gives a crap if Walcott can run faster than superman, he can't control the ball while he runs with it anyhow !
Will-i-am10
lol @ Travers, wants us to buy in the one place in the team we actually have depth
Ozi Gooner
goran pandev from lazio became free agent after winning his case against lazio ?! not a CL-tied player, sticker, he does tick some boxes

Be prepared & buy quickly the transfer window is days away.
Blunt G
Well, Wenger has been asked for his opinions on the transfer window before and he rarely talks about it (or is evasive about any plans). He's always coy about his plans. Not that he's changed much this time, but he's just letting other clubs know we're in the market and this increases the price of any player.

Happy Christmas everyone! :)
