Wenger signs experienced midfielder

Czech midfielder Tomas Rosicky has signed a new contract with the club. Mischievous rumours that he has sprained his wrist in the process and will be out for a month appear to be unfounded.

The contract length isn`t clear with some reports suggesting it only runs to the end of next season but Wenger refers to seasons in the plural when expressing his satisfaction today:

"I have spoken many times of Tomas` class and contribution, not only on the pitch but off it as well, and I very much feel that this new contract reflects that. Tomas` vision and touch is remarkable and I know that we will all benefit from his input in the coming seasons. Tomas is a special talent and we`re delighted that he has committed his future to Arsenal."

Despite being with the club for 3 and a half seasons the midfielder, once referred to as Little Mozart but more recently as Rosicknote, has only started 57 games in that time as protracted injuries have robbed him of almost 2 seasons worth of playing time.

Happy to be staying, Tomas said: "I am so pleased to have signed a new contract with Arsenal. The last two seasons haven`t been easy for me because of injuries but I feel it speaks volumes about the Club`s belief in me for this to be signed, and I truly believe I have a lot left to offer the Club, my team-mates and all the supporters. It`s felt like home since I arrived here four years ago and I believe we`re on the verge of achieving something special together. I`m looking forward to the coming months and hope that together, we are all celebrating at the end of the season."

If he can maintain fitness there is no doubt that he has the experience and class to contribute significantly to achieving our aspirations over the next couple of seasons. Well..it`s just like signing a new player isn't it!!!

Supporters are bound to feel sceptical about his susceptibility to injury but he won't be 30 until well into next season and as such he represents the experience we have perhaps allowed to leave too early at times in the past as financial restrictions compelled us to focus on youth while the stadium project was being funded.

So who says Wenger only signs youngsters then?

expectations were raised, then my brain kicked in.

A player (like Sammy Nas too) who just effortlessly glides on the ball. If we only get another 57 games out of him in his career I personally won't be complaining. Joy to watch.

Same here Tom, damn you Amos!

Lol clever Amos. I was thinking nah Wenger doesnt do experience
redandwhitestripemad
He was riding high when the 07/08 season started and worked really well with Clichy down the left flank - like Niko says he was a joy to watch when he was on top of his game. His directness is something we could well do with today.

Tomas is the 15th player we've given a new contract to since May. Is this the Webster ruling in action?

It's a shame to see a player of Rosicky's calibre lose two years at his physical peak as footballer. I think Wenger has replaced Rosicky squadwise but if we do win the premier league hopefully Tomas will get a winners medal as well. BTW why didn't he play against West Ham? He wasn't even on the bench.

Arsene hasn't been adverse to letting players go who never fully return from injury so he must be confident in TR7. Fair enough with me, excellent player, I just really hope his injury problems are behind him. Nevertheless, even if he can only be a squad player from now on then well worth keeping.

now we just need Gallas tosign up (who by the way is on 0% for the MOTM poll for West Ham! Are you guys serious? He was 2nd for me behind Ramsey). Unfortunately, I don't think he will. I think he's probably proved his point in the last 18 months and will probably go back to France which is a shame because he's got another two seasons in him with us I think.

This is good news but all I want to know is: will he be playing on wednesday?

january signings off to a flyer :)

Gallas is such an introvert it's painful at times, when he doesn't come over to clap the fans, goes straight down the tunnel, or never gets involved in any on pitch scuffles, it's a bit strange, but it's as if he's saying 'i'm here to do my job on the pitch and that's that, nothing else'

This guy plays with such style and is a joy to watch. Can be with the talent of players he has around him he is deadly to any defense. With a fully fit Arsenal he would be in my starting XI no doubt. Good signing, just hope his injury troubles are close to over.

great, now lets sign Pires back again on a 18 month contract. need his experience n guile to guide this team to win titles in the next two seasons. he is still good enough to be a squad player and will contribute a lot off the pitch as well..
luckys_10
I fully expect Gallas to sign on at some point.
Tom14
@ shewore - I totally understand Gallas' recalcitrance - once bitten and all that, he's seen first hand how a club can shaft you and how quickly fans opinion of you can turn. There will always be some part of him now that holds back in case the same happens to him from us. Mentally the bloke is a bit damaged but when you come from a greedy ****ed up scummy little club like chelski you aint gonna come through unscathed.

Will never forget two special strikes of TR 7. His debut goal against Hamburg in the CL which was an absolute belter and his two goals against Liverpool in the 2007 FA cup. Both were special strikes. He was at the peak of his powers in the latter game. Hope we get to see him back to his best sometime soon.
deltaforce
will he ever be injiry free, he came with such a good reputation.
