'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Thomas available in Hardback only

Alex Song, in a piece for the TV programme Soccer AM, has described team mate and centre back Thomas Vermaelen as the hardest man in the team.

The Verminator certainly looked the part against Liverpool sporting a classy 'shiner`, a black eye sustained in a clash of heads with Malouda in the Chelsea game. A clash in which he drew blood from Malouda's cranium simply with the use of his eye socket.

While nibbling on some barbed wire, departing from his usual diet of broken glass and house bricks, he tells us in the Liverpool matchday program that he has been playing through the pain barrier since fears that he had broken his fibula in the 0-0 draw against Villa thankfully proved unfounded.

"I was a little bit worried at first but suppose I was lucky! You never know, because it was the smaller leg bone that I hurt, you don`t feel the pain when one`s fractured as you would with the larger one. It turned out that I could play without pain against Manchester United, but after that game I had some more problems so I went for a scan.

"We could see then that there was a big bruise on the bone, and that`s all - so it`s painful but that can be controlled with medicine and when it`s not broken you can`t do too much wrong.

"It`s not a big problem to play - yes, it`s still there and will take some time to go away, but it`s not dangerous."

The Belgian international player who joined us from Ajax in the summer has proved an immediate favourite with supporters.

The tough guy image he is rapidly developing belies much greater skills with Fabregas claiming "I`m a big fan of him, he`s like one more midfielder"

Very, very ...VERY good player. Wins balls in the air, cuts out runs, looks very difficult to get around, has a hell of a left foot shot, scores goals with his head aswell as feet. Brings the ball out of defense really well. When i heard we'd signed him i said "Verm-Who??" ...In my opinion the best and most usful centre-back in the league right now.

Nice title Amos. The Verminator has made a handful of mistakes so far this season, but it's only his first year in England. I believe we'll see an even better player in 10-11.

Just your average Belgian bloke in my opinion :P hehehe! Be afraid, be very afraid! ^^

I tell ManU fans he's a glorified Vidic ;)

Let's hope Wenger can bring in a great partner for him for next season. Do you Brede would play well with him?
Trennon
It's the haircut too, he's got a Schwarzenegger hairdo. In the words of Abe Simpson, "Now that's a haircut you can set your watch by."

Did he cost £2 million less than what Man Utd eventually paid for Chris Smalling? English players off such substandard value for money.

He can't touch Gallas, but that's just down to how well Willy has been playing. Classy player that Verminator (c)

What a great title! I never cease to be amazed how AW can just suddenly come up with these players no one's ever heard of and they turn out to be great. Best thing is how ge gets on with Gallas, loved how he acknowledged Gallas for his tackle on N'gog.

“While nibbling on some barbed wire, departing from his usual diet of broken glass and house bricks”. I’ll tell you what, this is the only site that has me chuckling at my computer!
Sir Henry
A very nice read. Thank you

He truly is a double 'ard barstard. He's got the eyes of a killer and he's just utterly solid. Still young for a centre back too. I just wish the rest of the team were disciplined and organised enough for our undoubtedly great defence. Although hopefully the scouse game is evidence that we are becoming more organised.

It's my opinion that Tommy Vermaelen will prove to be a very important signing or The Arsenal long term.
