good luck tonight lads!
merlin
Is that genuine? It's hard to determine sarcasm of the interweb Merlin. lol. Come on boys, we can pound this lot!!
Rocky7
Come on you Gunners!!
GoonerLou
was kind of hoping sol would be captain today ;-)
TPowell
Nicky B!!!!!!! that's for all you ******** haters!!
TPowell
one-way game so far, the boys are in the mood and the crowd is excellent
TPowell
It just had to be Nick!!! Great break!!! So happy for the boy, he's playing very well!!
GoonerLou
SUPER SUPER NICK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
jaelle
Just what we needed with the early goal
ajwb
We've turned down the heat too much. The first 10 minute's before the goal we were playing so well Porto didn't know what the hell to do.
FuiKaka
make that 2...!!!
ArsenalRob
Nicky B again......... ***** all the haters!!
TPowell
nikky B!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ajwb
Fuikaka, wasn't it you calling Bendtner not good enough for the Arsenal?
TPowell
Wow. That was terrible by Porto ...give the ball away then leave Bedtner alone on the edge of the 6 yard box as well as letting Arshavin run through 3 of them... Maybe they felt bad about getting 2 easy goals in Portugal?
FuiKaka
hope samir is alright
TPowell
Yeh i was ...i stand by my comments. Apart from 2 easy finishes he's done very little and it doesn't excuse his 33 simple misses then were basic for any striker the other night ...but now's not the time for this ...there's a game on i wanna watch ;)
FuiKaka
Brilliant work from Andrey - Nick just waited and waited for the ball to come, again in a great position. Fantastic start! :D
GoonerLou
TWO CRAZY GOALS FROM SUPERNICK! AT HOME!!! But wtf is going on with Nasri???
jaelle
5 goals in his last 4 games... not sure what else you want from a striker
TPowell
Just love the way both of our criticised young players answered the doubters this week! Big 'up yours' there, well done guys!
GoonerLou
2 easy finishes - but he's always in the right place. His movement off the ball shows great faith in his team-mates, he trusts them to beat their man and give it to him on a plate, rather than coming deep to make it easier for them, but make it harder for himself, as RvP often does. It may sound like a selfish attribute, but with the likes of Nasri and Arshavin to feed him, why bet against them beating their man?
ArsenalRob
Haha nooooooooo !!! Rosicky and AA are looking deadly on those flanks.
FuiKaka
Great points AR
TPowell
AR - The second goal was just absolutely shocking defending by Porto. Bedtner was standing in that posistion for a very long time whilst the Porto defenders just wanted to stand around and watch. You wouldn't get away with that posistion against a better team.
FuiKaka
By the way, it has to be said that with Diaby, Song, Sagna, Bendter Verm, and Campbell out there, we look much more assured at defending set pieces
TPowell
Seriously ...just watch the replay and you'll see what i mean ...anyway like i said, 2 swimple finishes and little all else does not make him the player a lot of Arsenal fans think he is ...but also like i said, now is not the time. Lets drop it whilst the game is on?
FuiKaka
A better team FuiKaka? this is the Champions League, not a lot of better teams out there
TPowell
Perhaps, but it has no bearing on what I'm saying.
ArsenalRob
FK's right about Porto's defending. But then Rob's points still stand - Nick's all about right place, right time. How else could anyone have scored that tap-in? He focuses on finishing chances but is great at combination play when he needs to create chances too. It's not an easy balance to strike but Nick is pretty good at it.
GoonerLou
Fui, you keep moving the goalposts with your anti-Bendtner bilge. On Saturday there was lots of poor defending from Burnley and Bendtner missed absolute sitters, now there's poor Porto defending and he's scoring those sitters! When Torres misses sitters do you think he's crap too? You really are utterly clueless when judging Bendtner.
jaelle
playing well arsenal. hope u can carry this on. (spurs fan)
black-messi
Nik is a great link-up man, how anyone can say he brings us "nothing" doesn't understand football.
jaelle
One more goal for Arsenal and I can get back to my work.
Sajit
Jaelle - utter *********, your comment. I'm sorry, but i didn't get up at 3.30am to argue my opinion on Bedtner. I was on here for opinions about the game. Hence why i said 'now's not the time' ...i'll happily discuss it another time though :)
FuiKaka
And there's black-messi, my favourite TH fan!!! 2-0 good but need more. Am haunted by psv nightmares. Can't wait till this is over. More goals Gunners!!!!
julieloveshenry4ever
Bendtner is a young player and will have poor games from time to time, you just have to love how he doesn't let it affect him though!
TPowell
Yep TP, Nick's confidence is bordering on cockiness but that's exactly what you need from a striker!
GoonerLou
On the game - everthing looks good so far apart from about 4 or 5 dodgt squared passes that have gone astray and lead to Porto pushing forward. 1 more goal and i'll feel more comftable because 1 mistake and we're into extra-time.
FuiKaka
Nasri doesn't appear to be in any discomfort as he walks out for the second half, that's good news
TPowell
oh what the ***** is crook Redknapp doing at our beautiful stadium?!?!?!
TPowell
Why is Harry there??
FuiKaka
I dont rate Bendtner either, im certainly not a hater i just think hes painful to watch at times in a similar way Heskey is in an England shirt. But i do like his work ethic and desire, he's a different option and a good one. He is only young and as someone said judge him when hes 23/24. Been great tonight!
BigPat
We do need the 3rd goal to make things certain. The longer this goes like this, the more confident the Porto players will get.
Naijagunner
Eboue & Walcott in will give them something to worry about. I guess the Manager will rather see how things pan out before making changes.
Naijagunner
Is Rosicky hurt? I thought he was having a great game. He finally looks like he's returning to his old-self as of late.
FuiKaka
FK, you're the guy who compares a 21 yr old striker to 26-32 year old strikers and expects him to be just as polished as they are. *rolls eyes* Whatever. // Second half is getting scary, you can see AW is not happy.
jaelle
haha, I'm pretty sure Nasri just saved a goal with his cock!
TPowell
wow, what a goal from NAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSSSSSRRRRRRRRIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
TPowell
INCREDIBLE NASRIIIIIIIIIII
Naijagunner
Did I just see that?!?!
jaelle
Samir made my dick stand up
ajwb
Porto have just been EBOUE'D!!!!!!!
TPowell
OH MY GOD, brilliant footwork, brilliant finish from Samir!! 'Top drawer, absolutely top drawer!'
GoonerLou
WHAT?!?! I MUST BE DREAMING!!!
jaelle
THAT'S COMRADE EBOUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
jaelle
mAGIC FROM aRSHAVIN!! A beauty from Eboue!!! It is a rout!!!!
Naijagunner
YEEEEES EBOOOOOOOOOOOOOOUE'D
ajwb
time to take off a couple players to rest for Hull!!! what a game from Arsenal
TPowell
When Arsene reacts like that I just want to hug him!
jaelle
What a break, ooh how we missed those quick breaks! Fantastic run from AA, fantastic timing of the pass, fantastic run from Booboo, what a confident left-foot finish too!
GoonerLou
Verm has single-handedly blocked 4 or 5 shots today, quality game from him yet again
TPowell
And why was Diaby so flat footed in the move leading to TV's blocked shot? Very risky. No reason why we shouldn't keep a clean sheet.
Naijagunner
And all this without Cesc!
jaelle
What do you guys think MotM is? For me AA *just* beats Samir and Nicky to it so far!
GoonerLou
haha, Sagna with a shot in the box! what is going on?
TPowell
I'd say bring on Theo or Eduardo for Bendy, he needs to rest up for the weekend
TPowell
-What +Who
GoonerLou
agreed, Lou-- AA's been great today!
jaelle
No rest for Nicky...?
GoonerLou
pen
ajwb
Nicky B hat-trick
TPowell
Bendtner was MoTM for me. 1st Hat trick of his career, only after missing so many sitters at the weekend. Great lad! Great attitude and Great win!!
Naijagunner
World class Nikky! You deserve it
ajwb
That's why Arsene kept Nick on! :D Very well done Nick! Hmmm close run for MotM eh!
GoonerLou
and Fiorentina play well and win the home leg 3-2 but go out on away goals, shame
TPowell
I said we needed to make them pay for their petulance in the 1st leg. I think 5-0 just about does that.
Naijagunner
Well in everyone! Here's a question for you, would Bendtner have had the night he had tonight without the great reception the crowd gave him on Saturday when he was substituted?
gunnerkid107
Congrats on the hat-trick Nick. Stunning tonight-well pleased! QF of the Champions League AGAIN. Nice!!
julieloveshenry4ever
GK, you called it, man. Lets hope fans learn a lesson from this.
Naijagunner
Congratulations great win
Tiny T
Poor Fiorentina. Played their hearts out, but then, better them than us. Don't know too many teams that will be looking forward to playing us now; turned the bend, have we?
Naijagunner
Er, Mister Gullit? Got us out of jail? And Mister Souness-10 minutes in the second half? We won 5-0 and get no credit for it? Aaaarrggghg?!!! "This doesn't happen in the premiership." If Chelski won 5-0 , you'd be drooling! Give me a friggin' break!
julieloveshenry4ever
Its not fair to give man of the match to one player so I have given my quick evaluation of the players performance since everyone was so great, Clichy (continues his superb form), Nasri (scored the best goal individual goal this season and was more than adequate to replace the best midfielder in the world right now), diaby (was consistent and played really well offensively and defensively), Bendtner (well, we all know the saying about london buses), Arshavin (world-class and three assists), Eboue (what a player), Sagna (mr consistent), Vermaelen (flawless), Campbell had a shaky first half as he was being targeted by Falcao but a faultless second half, Rosicky (really good first half but faded in the second), Almunia (Solid goal keeping), Song (a typical Song display).
gronedrone
Watching the Fiorentina-Bayern highlights now. Poor them, that's exactly the lesson about the importance of defence at home. They took home the exact same scoreline as ours from the 1st leg, letting in 2 goals at home and they're out despite scoring 3. Poor them, but that's the sort of know-how you must have to survive at this level.
GoonerLou
Command performance from the Arsenal. There were times in the match when we were 2-0 up that the match looked up for grabs and we looked a trifle shaky. The lads overcame that patch and really slammed Porto with great individual quality in the second half. Only Falcao and their left back looked like quality for Porto. Well played to the entire team with special mention to Nasri, Arshavin, Diaby, Vermaelen and Eboue.
Deltaforce
At 2 nil up, Porto had a few chances, but then everything changed. Thanks Arsenal for making me smile all the way home from the Pub! Congrats to Super Nik!
hackneyval
When Eboue came my immediate thought was :"what a player to bring on". He will give you defensive cover plus pace and dribbling ability on the counter attack.
gronedrone
I was unlucky enough to watch the game on Al Jazeera tonight, what a spudfest of utter pillocks, Venables, Linekar and that wazzock Tim Sherwood, all of these bells were laughing at Bendtner pre match, how stubborn is Wenger, we can't all be wrong, he'll never be a class striker blah de feckin blah, the arab world has enough arseache without being bombed by the planet sized serving of humble pie that hit their studio tonight, seeing these sheepish cocks squirm and have to apologise was simply beautiful :) Nas, Bendy, Verm, and Arsh were fantastic tonight. Well done lads you did us all proud, a blazing football experience. Come on Arsenal, let's follow it up with a t*****ing for Phil Orange and Hull.
nikolaijns
Great stuff. Had Arsenal on my football slip. Hope an English team wins CL :)
Blitz
Arsenal deserve it..
Blitz
Big up to the crowd for the last 2 games we have been magnificent if I dont say so myself :) Honourable mention to He of the mullet cut and tragic single release Chrissy Waddle for Walcotts upturn in form and also to the the Jaws from James Bond wannabe Tony Cascarino for his comments on B52 “Is he good enough to play for Arsenal? I don’t think he’ll ever be a great striker.” Keep em coming lads.
iceman10
thank you god for Arsenal FC. Now, nikolaijns, now you know what we are suffering from in this part of the world, idiots like that lot, what's point bringing ex-tottenham player to "anylais" an arsenal game. Last time i checked tottenham wasn't playing tonight. they all had a go at nick, and they just been served. I loved nick's link up today it was great to watch, his goals were easy, but that what so called pundits critise for, now they are going about how easy his goals!! MotM for me is all of them. great response without best midfielder in the world. now lets go and get three points in the weekend. and that goal from nasri ... sometimes the joy of football can top the joy of anything ... even sex lol
Gooner SA
When talking about Walcott after the game on Saturday, Wenger said, "He did what good players do, he didn't talk in the newspapers he gave his answer on the football pitch." Bendtner did the same and he looked right up for making amends from the first time the ball came into farting distance, what I#ve always liked about the boy, no hiding. Diaby I thought had a superb game and what a step up in form from Nasri too, I was starting to regard him as a luxury player but he's looked outstanding the last two games.
Little Dutch
On another note, if Silvestre had put in a performance like Campbell did tonight he'd have had death threats!
Little Dutch
I agreee LD, i said to the guy next to me how pants Sol looked all night. I dont mind him stepping in, but you dont want to rely on him. Hopefully Gallas will be back sooner rather than later.
paul_ownz
Was nice to see us finally spank into a team from the off, no easing our way into the game thus giving Porto a chance to find their feet too, no two ways about it a better team would've punished our all too obvious defensive deficiencies and Sol looked well creaky tonight but what the hell, we'll worry about that tomorrow, let's just enjoy belting our way into the last eight 5-0.
nikolaijns
Yeh LD i was thinking that Sol looked shaky, but on saying that i'm a lot more confident with him next to Verm then Silvestre. Great performance all around. Fantastic run by Eboue for that 4th goal, and Nasri ...well do i need to say anything? In the first leg i remember thinking to myself "i think Arshavin could really hurt these guys" and he certainly did. Brilliant performance. Clichy has kicked into form wicked styles. He's really flying right now. Rosicky has got to get a mention aswell, he really is starting to look like he's getting back to his old-self after such a long injury, looks really confident on the ball again, maybe a hair cut to stop it going in his eyes and he'll be 100%? :P With all these players going back into form, it makes me personally, feel that little bit more confident about our run home.
FuiKaka
Also have to mention what a great sight it was for me, watching it on an Australian channel i'm not sure where our coverage came from, but on the 4th goal it showed a replay on Wengers reaction, he literally got out of his seat and jumped in the air with his arms raised. Makes me happy to see Wenger happy ...is that gay? Haha. Does anyone have any idea why Mr.Redknapp was there? Just being nosy?
FuiKaka
he was there to watch "European" football! you wouldn't see that in the lane
Gooner SA
Good to see Clichy back to some form. I was just thinking a couple of weeks ago that it we should sell him to Juve before they notice he's crap. But hopefully he's back to the level we expect from him.
krismon1
What a fantastic performance! There was a small spell where Porto look threatening, but as Souness said, there is never a game where a team dominates 100% of the time. Other than that we were friggin awesome. Clichy, Nasri, Diaby, Song, Bendtner and Arshavin were all world class. We may not win the CL, but for the past 13 years we've given a good account of ourselves, and when you get moments like Nasri's goal, well, that's what it's all about. One of the best individual goals you're ever going to see. I'd be surprised if it didn't win goal of the tournament.
Rocky7
And I didn't think Sol was too bad.
Rocky7
Nasri really made me so happy and for him to score at the right time with such a special goal. Eboubou ran all that way to score and with his left foot. Quite honestly these lads hv done well. How many diiferent lads have scored for Arsenal this season??
phreddy
Do you know what makes me even happier? Look at half the players who are bringing their A game now .... all players we didn't think would be good enough, players who were booed by our own supporters, doubting Thomas's. Diaby, Eboue, Bendtner, Song, even Clichy to an extent, they're all coming good at the right time ... it's brilliant to see.
Rocky7
Sol had a mixed game, started really shakily, but grew into it as the match went on. In the 2nd half, he dealt with dangerous situations with his experience. Overall, it was ok performance from him. Nasri is MotM for me - what a performance! Pre-assist for the 1st goal with a beautiful pass, defensive block on the goal line to prevent a goal at a crucial time, and an exquisitely worked individual goal. There were signs at Burnley that this was coming from him.
prits
By the way, it's unlikely I'll get to do a match report for this game, busy, busy, busy.
Little Dutch
"would Bendtner have had the night he had tonight without the great reception the crowd gave him on Saturday when he was substituted?" -- excellent question. For all the talk of Bendtner's arrogance (or confidence), I do think that Bendtner's problems scoring at home came from the home crowd abuse, which was very bad last season. Bendtner, Eboue and Denilson suffered far more abuse at every home game than Ade did the entire season. This season some home fans seemed to have learned their lesson. Predictably, Bendtner's goals yesterday have been dismissed by pundits and many gooners. He gets trashed for missing simple goals that "even my grandmother could score," now he's being dismissed for scoring those same easy goals. He can't win. Mick Dennis (Daily Express) attacked Chris Waddle for his comments on Walcott, pointing out that at 19 Theo scored 3 away goals v. Croatia while Waddle was "mixing seasoning for sausages in a meat products factory and playing non-League football. But Newcastle United understood that he would improve with age and signed him. By not extending the same generosity of judgment to Walcott, Waddle tells us much about his own brain.” Fantastic! At 24, Drogba was playing in France's 2nd division, ffs! It's ridiculous to make any definitive judgments about players who are still 19-22. What I always liked about Bendtner--as opposed to Ade--was that Nik was never quoted in the press saying stupid stuff like how flattered he was to have Utd interested in him. He may be arrogant but I've yet to see any quote from him showing it. And it's interesting how AW consistently takes off Rosicky around the 70 min mark or thereabouts. Reminds me how he did the same thing with Bergkamp and how it infuriated Dennis until AW showed him the stats that proved how consistently he'd tire and fade at that point in the game. I also am very excited to see how underperforming players are coming into form, esp. Nasri, a player I've always rated highly, just hated to see him be so average this season. Finally, I don't think Sol was that bad, tho he was shaky at times. And even if he plays badly, at least Sol brings a commanding leadership quality that Silvestre doesn't.
jaelle
I'd rather have a shaky Sol then Sylvestre, he just generally scares me when he's on the pitch. He seems to have lost all sense of defensive posistioning somewhere in that giant head of his. Also, Sylvestre puts Verm on his wrong side. My opinion of Bedtner is well known we'll just have to agree to disagree Jaelle and i will keep my opinion on him to myself. Arguing with fellow supporters is not something i wanna do and you have my appologies for comments made, it was about 4am and i had just woken up :) I am as excited as anyone to see players i knew were good come into form (Clichy and Nasri especially, to a lesser extend Den and Walcott) One player i really know is struggling to find there former self, and i really hope can come back into form is Eduardo. He's got such a Bergkampesque touch and was so deadly inside the 18 yard box. It's hard for me to watch him sometimes no being even half as clinical infront of goal as i know he can be. He could be so deadly for us! Spirits are rising around the Emirates. It put a big smile on my face to hear the announcer after Eboue's goal "Emmanual *whole crowd joines in* EBOUE!"
FuiKaka
People's preference for Campbell over Silvestre does seem to be, judging by comments, based on reputation. Like I said, if Silvestre had put in an identical shift, would you honestly be saying, 2Yeah, but his experience and positioning are invaluable." Because, whisper it quietly, Silvestre is occasionally capable of offering both himself. For me, I'd play Silvestre at home and Campbell away at the moment.
Little Dutch
"I'd play Silvestre at home and Campbell away at the moment." -- actually, that's not a bad idea, esp. given Sol's and Silvestre's recurring injury problems. FK, totally agreed about Eduardo -- it's absolutely killing me to see him struggle so much this season. I despair at the prospect that he'll never fully recover from his injury, mentally or physically. Patrick Barclay pointed out that there was a moment in the Stoke game where Eduardo did not go for a loose ball because he was being cautious, whereas before his injury he would've gone for it without thinking. Also, FK, no need to apologize for your comments yesterday, I was rude to you as well.
jaelle
Well the thing with Campbell is that he does a good job defending route one football still, which is very valuable for the team considering in all but 1 of our remaining 9 PL games, that's how teams will be trying to score on us.
TPowell
One thing I noticed whilst at the game yesterday was that with Diaby, Bendtner and Song in the side, we just looked a more physically imposing side, a good mix. Diaby really impressed me, he's playing with such maturity all of a sudden, he has the potential to be one awesome player. And it's great for Cesc and all of us to know we are capable of winning well without him.
Gooner_Vin
Diaby took almost 3 years to recover from his leg break. Eduardo definitely needs more time to recover. I am quietly confident that he will.
Sajit
I agree with you LD in many respects. Silvestre is certainly not as much of a liability as many Gooners make him out to be. He's always very committed and his positional sense is generally good. I just think its the way he plays that makes him look more awkward than he really is. It is a bit odd seeing a squat-looking Frenchman with a particularly large head running around at CB. I still think Campbell is a better option at the back though. Not only is he more of a commanding presence than Silvestre, he's looked a bit mroe decisive since he arrived in January, and of course allows Tommy V to play on the left side. Also, he gives us some height at the back, and whilst I'm not from the mob who believes every CB has to be at least 20 ft, at their age, neither Micky or Sol are particularly good jumpers (though Sol, despite being older, seems to still be better in this area), and so his height and decisiveness when dealing with long-balls is a major factor in his selection.
ArsenalRob
Amen, sajit, amen.
jaelle
I hope you're right with regards to Eduardo sajit. What concerns me is if that applies to Ramsey, too. I know he's still very young, but 3 years playing inside himself would be a big blow in his current situation.
ArsenalRob
Both Sol and Silvestre bring smething to the team, in different ways. Sol's 1st half performance at the Emirates was down to nerves, first home start and all that. He will be a completely different player by the next game as he showed in the 2nd half, when he had settled down. Silvestre is a steady old head (no pun intended) in defense as well and shows good positional sense. If it comes to making one choice, though, I will pick Sol everytime.
Naijagunner
The last couple of times i've watched Sylvestre though he's dangerous player people onside. I think it was against Sunderland Where he got caught at the back with Kenwyn Jones and Sylvestre hasn't go the pace to deal with 1 on 1 that far from goal.
FuiKaka
Everyone, check out Perry Groves' response to this "shirt of hurt" challenge, I loved it!!: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/tv_and_radio/8558164.stm
jaelle
Amazing statistics showing Bendtner's importance to the team: http://www.goal.com/en/news/9/england/2010/03/10/1826323/arsenal-comment-nicklas-bendtner-is-arsene-wengers-most-valuable- Apparently our win rate is 76% when he's playing (better than Cesc's and Arshavin's win rate).
