Arsenal - Vermaelen Ban Upheld

Arsene Wenger's Arsenal today had their appeal against Thomas Vermaelen's red card turned down by the FA.

Vermaelen was sent off in the match last Saturday after the linesmen flagged for an offence as he and West Ham's Guillermo Franco tangled in the penalty area. The referee brandished a red card and awarded a penalty (that was subsequently saved by Almunia .... whooop).

The video replays showed that Franco hit the deck after very little contact, so Arsene and his staff decided to appeal in the hope of the Verminator being able to play against Birmingham this coming Saturday. Unsurprisingly, the ban was upheld.

'At a Regulatory Commission hearing today, a claim for wrongful dismissal from Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen was dismissed,' said the FA.

So that's that then. Two old men at the back at the weekend?

Your appeal was never going to be successful. It would have just further highlighted the ridiculous nature of the FA disciplinary system.

Where has this myth of the 2 match ban come from? It is ONE!!!!!!

Even if Franco had blatantly dived to win the penalty and there was absolutely no contact, this appeal would still have been squashed. Though my initial reaction just after the Vermaelen red card was that we should appeal, I realise the futility of it all. The FA system tries to enforce respect for refrees and not earn it.

And it's a disgrace that our red-free fair play record this season has been blighted by a poor refereeing decision. It was never a red. The FA are muppets. Not a bit of wonder there's turmoil at the top of that organization.

Apologies to everyone but I've started my rant, I need to finish it. I feel particularly sorry for Thomas who has had a superlative first season and been immense in the Arsenal colours. A committed and FAIR player who didn't deserve that decision to blot his copybook.

We'll be okay- start with Sol or Silvestre alongside Song. Denilson and Diaby flanking Cesc in the middle with one of them having instructions to sit a bit deeper and clean up/ break up plays, maybe even go 4-4-2 and put Nasri or Rosicky wide, and there is no shortage of attackers- although I'd like to see Eduardo start at the scene of the crime. Arshavin as the roaming forward, with Bendtner and Walcott off the bench if needed- we should be fine and Vermaelen gets a well deserved week off.

they double the ban if the appeal is deemed frivolous, ie if its obvious the person deservered to be red carded, and the club are appealing just to delay the ban so that the player in question can play in an important fixture that they would have missed had they accepted the ban in the first place

It was hardly going to be overturned though. The FA only shows any teeth when it comes to low-level policing and regulating... on the big issues they are a clueless bunch of suited administrators.

Okay so in my opinion, simply put, i'd go with Sol and Song at the back. Sol and Sylvestre would be just lacking way too much pace, and Sol has just flat out performed better then Sylvestre, the latter really does scare me when he's on the pitch, he looks very lost.

What did we really expect from the FA, when they see fit not to charge Stevie G a few weeks ago, and no action against Torres for kicking at the Penalty spot at the Weekend. But let's uphold TV's Red card! lol not!

So all it has done is confirm what a bunch of bell ends the FA really are.

Not a surprising decision at all, and TV is only out for one game. Song and Sol can cope, although it would mean that Sol would be doubtful for the Barca game (I dont think he can play 2 games in 5 days). So, we might just see Silvestre and Song line up at CB.

Wenger already said 'we will be giving sol a big rest next week' im pretty sure he was talking about the birmingham game, not the barca game....

This appeal was always going to fail because the FA didn’t want to ruin an afternoon with any sort of work. For goodness sake afternoons are for a nice nap aren’t they, particularly after a heavy three course lunch and a glass of claret. Bloody footballers.
