Wigan-Arsenal Team Line-ups

Without Cesc Fabregas and Manuel Almunia, Sol Campbell is wearing the armband for the first time in about four years. The team he's leading out, however, is slightly less familiar with Craig Eastmond, Mikael Silvestre and Lukasz Fabianski standing in for Denilson in midfield, Thomas Vermaelen in defence and Manuel Almunia in goal respectively.

Here are the full squads playing at the DW Stadium today:

Wigan Starting Line-up
Kirkland, Melchiot, Gohouri, Bramble, Figueroa, Rodallega, Diame, Watson, McCarthy, N'Zogbia, Moreno

Wigan Substitutes
Stojkovic, Scharner, Scotland, Moses, Gomez, Sinclair, Boyce

Arsenal Starting Line-up
Fabianski, Sagna, Campbell, Silvestre, Clichy, Diaby, Rosicky, Eastmond, Nasri, Walcott, Bendtner

Arsenal Substitutes
Mannone, Traore, Eboue, Merida, Henderson, Vela, Van Persie

Come on you Gunners!

Sorry guys, just got around to putting up the teamsheets. Chat away! Hmmm end-of-season stuff so far, we need to up the tempo although it may be slightly tougher with the personnel today. We must see the likes of Rosicky and Diaby step up big time after the game at WHL.
GoonerLou
Hi Guys. New member here. I was hoping that we could win this convincingly to make up on the goal difference a bit as I dont see us doing it in the remaining games. But I think this may well finish 1-0. Diaby and Walcott need to learn to pull the trigger at times as they got into a couple of decent positions but their indecisiveness lets them down. Still here's hoping for a goal before half time. AW should bring on RVP in the second half though.
True-Gooner-Blood
I spoke too soon. 1-0 Walcott!!!
True-Gooner-Blood
well done theo (",)
bowiecokemirror
Sweet finish
ajwb
Hey welcome TGB! Do check out the forums as well - we're chatting about this game and many other issues there. Yeah I was finding Theo and Diaby a bit frustrating to watch with their Hleb-esque reluctance to just shoot. Now Theo's playing a bit more naturally and when he thinks less and acts more intuitively and confidently, he looks better.
GoonerLou
Agree TGB, our reluctance to shoot is infuriating at times. I don't think we have any chance of making up the goal difference anyway but hope we can grind out 3 wins and Chelsea and Man U drop points.
bowiecokemirror
Hi All. Thanks GoonerLou will head over to the forums to check it out! A major problem is I can see Liverpool getting something against the Chavs at Anfield which could help our cause, but I dont see ManUre dropping too many points. Seeing them win a 19th title will be sickening.
True-Gooner-Blood
Thanks Lou. It's been an enjoyable match so far from both teams. Nice finish by Theo. He needs to learn to shoot more when he gets in those positions.
gunnerkid107
No Eduardo today I see. Odd, Sweet goal by Theo just wish we was a bit more free flowing. Eastmond is really doing well.
Arsenal-till-i-die
Silvestre scores at the same end against Wigan again!!!!
Gun 'Em Down
Heavens above. Silvestre!! 2-0. I am happy for him. He gets so much stick that he deserves a goal to boost his confidence a bit...
True-Gooner-Blood
That Wigan player should be booked for diving!
gronedrone
We have really got them on the rack. Need to get some more goals and turn it into a rout
True-Gooner-Blood
Good header.
Arsenal-till-i-die
Would be nice to see RvP for 10mins
ajwb
I've noticed Fabianski is actually a good shot stopper. He is just prone to lapses of concentration every now and again. His positioning on set pieces also worries me.
True-Gooner-Blood
I wonder if the boss will throw in RvP with us leading the game and Wigan not looking terribly dangerous. Nice to see Theo playing with more confidence cos the mental side of things affect his game so much.
GoonerLou
Yeah it does look unlikely that RvP will be used now. He will probably and hopefully start against Citeh.
Deltaforce
Complacency has cost us a goal..we were playing well within ourselves after the 2nd goal and will now have to work hard again.
Deltaforce
Merida is coming on so I doubt we will see RVP now. Think AW is saving RVP for the game against Abu Dhabi. B******s. Wigan just scored! S**t. Just hope we hang on.
True-Gooner-Blood
Not sure why Nasri was casually watching instead of marking Watson, poor goal to concede
bowiecokemirror
We may get punished here for coasting through the game. When will we ever learn.
Gooner_Vin
Its painful to watch Silvestre defend. He is slower than Sol FFS!!!
True-Gooner-Blood
Indeed Vin, some old weaknesses on show again... sigh..
GoonerLou
Sol is fast though
ajwb
I'm speechless
bowiecokemirror
OMG
ajwb
How predictable
Gooner_Vin
Yet again Fabianski costs us.....Only this time his error is too costly.
True-Gooner-Blood
lololololol
ajwb
Oh dear, yet again..
GoonerLou
It doesn't even hurt anymore, its laughable
Gooner_Vin
Seriously no words to describe whats happening..error from Fabianski again and our marking of Wigan players on the corner was shocking.
Deltaforce
Bad subs from Arsene.Get Rvp on quick
ajwb
Let's kiss the title goodbye - one last time.
GoonerLou
3-2. I'm actually laughing.
Gooner_Vin
******** idiots
ajwb
hahahhahaha *****
gunnerkid107
I can't actully understand what is happening.....oh wait yes I can.
Arsenal-till-i-die
apply some pressure and we crack.Bottlers
ajwb
Un-f'n-believable. This is horrible. How the **** did we lose this game??!!
True-Gooner-Blood
We've seen a lot of capitulations but that's the worst one by far!
gronedrone
Why, for the love of christ, did Wenger wait until we were on the ropes to bring on Van Persie? Unbelievably bad game management.
Wyn Mills
Arsene should have made our subs long before he did. You could tell nothing was happening and something needed changing.
Gooner_Vin
we really can't give Fabianski any more chances, he makes a costly error almost every time he plays. forget shipping Almunia out, get rid of Fabianski first.
bowiecokemirror
where is super sol now hahahaah pmsl i cant stop honestly
123spurs
sack every single one of those players out there- ******** embarrassing
Dan_83
Such a laughing stock. Ridiculous mentality in this team. Who did they think they were, cruising like Brazil against a relegation-threatened side? Shameful.
GoonerLou
wigan wigan wigan wigan
123spurs
*****in hilarious, no other way to put it
gunnerkid107
We need a goalkeeping overhaul. This is just shocking....
True-Gooner-Blood
Sol was again one of the better players, in case some idiots didn't see. But oh well, of course they didn't, they're consumed by this blind hatred.
GoonerLou
Absolutely shocking defending. Nothing short of abject capitulation. I'm fed up of Wenger waving his arms during the games. What the f........ is he doing during training sessions? So bloody angry. To lose that game from 2-0 up is more than careless, its criminal.
Wyn Mills
Now the knives will really be out all over the media and Arsenal blogs. Massacre coming up. Mass suicides on one particular blog too.
Deltaforce
he shud organise hes def better been captain an all,
123spurs
wenger needs to go upstairs.... bring in a new manger, fresh faces, this team has gone as far as it can go - and thats going to be 5th by the end of the season
Dan_83
If Wednesday suggested it, this confirms it. You really aren't bigger than us anymore. Arsene out. HAHA.
WhiteHartSpur
nikolaijns
an we did ye a favour on sat an blew it
123spurs
Who's 'tottering' now, eh? You're pathetic.
Tony Rocky Horror
Seriously most of the team deserved a literal slap in the face.
GoonerLou
LMAO@niko. That just about sums it up.
Deltaforce
TRH you lost to Portsmouth without putting up a fight. You cant take a higher moral ground here.
Deltaforce
What did Bendtner do all game except lose the ball? What is the point of keeping Van Persie on the bench??? Its not as if he needs resting! I really don't understand Wenger's thinking here. Someone help me please. Why take arguably our most dangerous player (Walcott) off, and bring Merida (who is off in summer) and Eboue (not a prolific goalscorer) on. He hands the match to Wigan. Literally hands it to them on a plate.
Wyn Mills
If this does get it through AW's head that the goalkeeping and Defence need attention, I dont know what will because it will be the same s**t next season if we keep clowns like Fabianski and Silvestre in this side.
True-Gooner-Blood
1st wenger moans the lack of maturity in the team after the defeat in white hart lane.. and how does he respond to that?.. play eastmond away on a pitch that has seen wigan defeat chelsea and l'pool.. it has come to a stage where us gooners are laughing at a defeat..good luck to all of us
McGooner
What like wolves doing the double over u ********s? feck off u spud p.r.ic.ks. Big mouth load shooting peasants, two wins and u think you're awesome, you're the pathetic pr.icks trawling here like the gloating little small club no marks that you'll always be. '61 NEVER AGAIN.
nikolaijns
I love how Spurs beat us once and they think they are better than us. *****e game from Arsenal today yes, would of been worse if we had all 11 of out FIRST team out there. In a way, glad we lost because now it may open Arsene ''I never saw a ******** thing'' Wenger's eyes and to sign A ******** GOALKEEPER.
Arsenal-till-i-die
with out puttin up a fight we dominate against portsmouth, just unlucky with decisions .....an its how well you bounce back from such defeat, an we beat ye an chelsea after yer lose to us ye failed to beat wigan
123spurs
Disagree Wyn Mills. The available players had enough ability to retain the ball and stop Wigan if they so wanted. The substitutions didn't lose us the game. The defence and some of our attacking players did.
Deltaforce
Did anybody care what happened after their second goal. 2-2 would feel exactly like 3-2. Deltaforce is right, I'm gonna leave before people go crazy and spurs fans (who follow our club a little too much) come here to troll the ***** out of us. I think I would have been crying had it not been an end of season game, I don't think we have done a capitulation quite this spectacular before. Oh, well there's first time for every thing.
gronedrone
There's 'keeping the faith in the players' and there's also something called 'repaying the faith'. Arsene's substitutions were late and questionable but just what were the players on the pitch doing, regardless of who's on the pitch really? If it's the first time, you say it's a learning curve. But just how many learning curves have we gone on?!
GoonerLou
It wasn't so bad guys... Let's applaud the team. It has been a better season than last. Unfortunately, the same inexperience problems are holding us back. They got scared at 2-1 and then it was a collective meltdown. 3 players failed to close down N'zogbia on that 3rd shot. As i said last year, I want a better no1 than Almunia. He is a no2 at best and his absence today on a 'wrist' injury was strange at best. The other keepers (Fabianski, Mannone) should be sent on long loans to get experience because they are not good enough yet. I feel bad for Fabianski because his confidence must be getting lower because he always seem to make a blunder when he gets his chance (remember Porto). Goalkeeping is one area where you cannot gamble or educate young players as every mistake is likely to be punished. Let's take our young keepers out before their morale is shot down. We need an experienced hand in goal. Look at ManU, last year Ben Foster was meant to challenge Van Der Sar who is in his 40s. When VdS got injured, Foster looked like a mental wreck or a fish out of water. As much as i cant stand Ferguson, the man can't be wrong all the time after all the trophies he has won. Come on Arsene, do the sensible thing. Come on you gunners. Still proud of what these guys have done this year but they need some help to be winners.
Gael-Force
Well, considering our wins. We can be quite proud. How'd you fair with Chelsea this year? HAHAHAHAH.
WhiteHartSpur
123, till you finish higher than us in the league table you cant be compared to us. Bottomline.
Deltaforce
Oh and get rid of Diaby as well. He is c**p constantly loses the f****n ball, is clumsy and doesn't look where he passes and his aversion to shooting is infuriating as well...
True-Gooner-Blood
arseanl til i die....an you hope ur team lost .....great fan you are......its been comming for years...... honestly 4 year sfor so called top club with nothing to show for
123spurs
Delta keep going the way you're going and you may eat your words? Who you got next? Burnley...Scary...
WhiteHartSpur
feck off u white tart pain inbred cunn.nnnnn.tttt
nikolaijns
St. Totteringhams Day? April 18 - Arsenal are ******** rubbish day.
WhiteHartSpur
The first goal was down to Diaby and Nasri ball watching instead of picking up Watson. Second goal was Fabianski being hopeless as catching. The third goal was a great strike but also because we were demoralised after throwing away a 2 goal lead. Whatever happens I don't want to see Fabianski in an Arsenal shirt again. I know you can't blame just one player for the result but he has made so many mistakes now that you can't have any faith left in him.
bowiecokemirror
Yes, the defending is laughable. It was always going to be tricky having lost Vermaelen. But I was shocked to see Sagna making all sorts of hamfisted mistakes. Diaby had his usual infuriating game where he jogs through midfield not bothering to compete for the ball, much less shield the back four.
Wyn Mills
Basically what I was saying is that some of the players just don't deserve Arsene's trust and should be punished - fined or given extra training, whatever. Chances should be earned.
GoonerLou
true delta fair point but unless wenger changes hes ways same thing will happen next year
123spurs
Gael, I note what your saying. However a team of Arsenal's caliber shouldnt be f****n up games like this, especially when they are so important. I want to take positives from this but I am hard pressed to find any. Its such a gutting loss, even more so then against the chavs, mancs and yes even the scum from *****e fart lane, as we won this, we had a chance of running the chavs and mancs all the way to the wire.
True-Gooner-Blood
What a shambles, I wonder what our faithful will say. I love this team and always have and always will but this is rubbish. Amos you told me we played well on Wednesday but the same errors were committed again and again. I really now have doubts we will make next years CL. Mancity and the spuds on current form could over take us. Oh well there's always next year.
alwaysgunner
defence defense defense!! over the summer
49ers
ye say we lost to portsmouth, but the team lost to them beat ye 3 days later
123spurs
WhiteHartSpur, considering you are going for your annual anal shafting at United, I dont think you'll end the season quite like you expect.
Deltaforce
True 123, but that kind of logic can be rather faulty. Wolves did the double over you and we did the double over them. So right back at you.
Deltaforce
Where were the Diaby and Nasri who're playing to get into the France squad just a month or so ago?
GoonerLou
I don't think the substitutions cost us the game. If we need RvP to beat Wigan or if we can't be professional and close out a game, then I'd suggest we are in trouble. Too many players were casual in possession in the 2nd half. That is what lost us the game.
Gael-Force
bloddy true , i have to gloat a small bit but seriously, get rid of wenger
123spurs
Just think short term now, try and get a result against abu dhabi (though we will probably balls that up as well) and just guarantee a CL spot for next season.
True-Gooner-Blood
unless he changed hes transfer policy
123spurs
Deltaforce, those substitutions were too late. After about 75 mins we were starting to lose the initative in midfield. The ball wasn't sticking to Bendtner and Wigan just developed the confidence to come forward. What any sane manager would have done would be to introduce more attacking threat. Wenger did nothing. He didn't react until it was far far too late, and even then he left on an ineffective Bendtner and brought on Merida rather than Van Persie. I don't understand the thinking behind it.
Wyn Mills
Very true Gooner Lou. Diaby, Nasri and Rosicky too need to look at themselves and ask whether they really bring to the table. Is running with the ball, beating two rival players but finally giving the ball away good enough? We just dont keep the ball well enough. Our defence are nervous all the time. No coordination betweem them and the keeper. Its like cats on a hot tin roof. Major change in mentality needed to improve from here on.
Deltaforce
Any idiot wanting AW out has lost the plot, but he has said he has money available so I'll expect some serious acquisiitons in the summer or I will be very disappointed.
bowiecokemirror
dreading the trio of bellamy Tevez and adebayor next week
49ers
I support Arsene 100% in what he has tried to do over the last few years but i'm afraid he has given some players far too long to prove themselves. It's time he cleared out the rubbish and spent some money. Almunia, Fabianski, Silvestre and Diaby are NOT good enough. Rosicky and Eduardo don't look as if they will ever be the same after their injuries and many of the other players only turn up on certain days.
gunnerpig
Exactly Gael - the players on the pitch were responsible no matter who came on/off, no eff-ing matter who manages them even. So 'Wenger out' is irrelevant.
GoonerLou
123, AW had a tiny transfer budget in the last 4 years. No manager enjoys selling his inflential players. This season he apparently has the cash. Lets see what he does now. You cant deny he does a bloody good job with his resources. Todays defeat is not his fault. Its the fault of our primadonna players.
Deltaforce
Can all Spurs fans just leave this site now please...we won, they lost, just leave them to their despair.
Tony Rocky Horror
Really, its a bit arrogant to say we don't need RVP to beat Wigan. That's the same kind of complacency that I suspect has seen us fall short this season.
Wyn Mills
For the very first time. I agree with TRH.
Deltaforce
I agree with gunnerpig some of our players have been given far too long to prove their worth probably due to our tight finances. There has to be better players out there for reasonable money than what he have in the squad at the moment.
bowiecokemirror
I'll be over on VS firing my gun into the air.
Tony Rocky Horror
I wonder if this is why Arsene almost said we're signing Chamakh before the game, and hinting plural signings at that. The players looked like they'd automatically win the game by default and didn't have to WORK for it. Horrifying mentality if you consider this bunch of guys haven't won anything at all.
GoonerLou
Wyn, what i am saying is that the Arsenal team can't just rely on RVP. We have a supporting cast that if unable to deal with top opposition, should at least be able to beat lower opposition or at least not squander 2-0 leads, no disrespect intended.
Gael-Force
gunnerpig, you are right about many players coasting through their seasons. Doing their job just about adequately to keep their jobs. But we need some of them to do an outstanding job or leave. Time is indeed up for some of them. For example - I dont think we will see Almunia starting again for us this season (maybe even next). It seems no coincidence that Almunia didn't play today after AW saying two days back that Almunia was not his long term no 1.
Deltaforce
Players get tired or complacent. When that happens a manager has to have the tactical awareness to change things. No point Wenger saying the players on the pitch should have done it. Yes, they should have, but they didn't for 10 minutes and he did nothing. There's absoluetly no point having a predatory striker like Van Persie sitting on the bench if you're not going to use him. Would Ferguson have left Rooney on the bench when Wigan scored their first comeback goal?
Wyn Mills
All hail TRH, captain of the cavalry.
Deltaforce
true an he has done well, play great football, so maybe the prem league and CL is out of reach, fa cup an cc is better chance of winning silverware thats what players want
123spurs
We are just not hard to beat enough. Today we were complacent on the ball, and worse off the ball too. Some of our players were watching the game as spectators. Not enough of our players are ready to do the dirty work. As an example (he's not the only one), Diaby stands idle assuming that Sagna or Sol will get the better of the attacker and then feed him the ball nicely so he can go wandering upfield and score a beauty. We are too good to do the dirty work.
Gael-Force
I watched El Classico last week and it was a pleasure to watch two such demanding competent goalkeepers. It really hit home just how far Almunia is from that standard. I think Arsene realised after the Barcelona game that we need to spend and get rid of some of this ballast. I bloody hope he did anyway!
gunnerpig
Fair enough Wyn Mills. It did look like AW had his standard substitutions list ready when we were 2-0 up (i.e consolidation by bringing on Eboue and taking TR7 off as he doesn't think his fitness is top notch over 90 mins) and then it was too late to change them! But still primary responsibility for the defeat still has to be taken by the players. They showed no urgency, maturity or composure worthy of our club.
Deltaforce
GF, I hear what you're saying. But we're already down to many of our 2nd or even 3rd string players, especially in defence. I don't necessarily expect someone like Eastmond to last a whole 90 minutes in a top flight game. But its really complacent thinking to expect you can beat any premiership team with your supporting cast, especially away from home. The team haven't relied on RVP for a good part of the season, but today he was available. Why not play him, especially as Bendtner wasn't providing any sort of distraction to Wigan in the 2nd half?
Wyn Mills
Gunnerpig, Valdes the barca keeper is not even certain to go to the world cup. he's fighting for the 3rd keeper spot, the one who's unlikely to play. To be honest, i can't really rate valdes because barca do a bery good job of keeping the ball so he doesnt have to intervene so often. He makes mistakes too. Obviously almunia is not even in the spain national team reckoning. Lehman, Seaman made mistakes at times too but they had presence. This year, we have suffered from too many gk errors.
Gael-Force
Wyn Mills about RvP, when we were 2-0 up, the odds on a Wigan victory were miniscule. So I guess it was thought that RvP has to be wrapped up in cotton wool for the game against Citeh. Looking at RvP's injury record and general bad luck anything is possible. Now in hindsight it does look like a blunder and sending RvP on in the 89th or 90th minute was too late. But then we are gifted with hindsight while the manager is not.
Deltaforce
That was a bit of a disgrace eh. Disappointing, but not shocking. This team needs several kicks up their arse!! ******** useless****s. This has happened so often before - this team simply refuses to learn from its mistakes. I have a bit of sympathy for Fabianski coz he has good ability, but he needs to be sent on loan to a Championship side, and let him regain his confidence out of the limelight. The back 5 looked shaky for the last 15 mins, although Sol & Silvester dealt well with Wigan for 80 mins or so.
prits
GF, those keepers do play for very good sides, granted. But their command of the area and how they organise and take crosses is far superior to Manuel.
gunnerpig
GF, Wenger didn't bring RVP on until it was far too late to save the game. The initative had already been handed over to Wigan even before they scored. This defeat does far more damage to our morale for the city game than any possible injury to RVP. Wenger is normally so predictable, even scientific, about his substitutions that one wonders what on earth was going through his mind when the side conceeded that meek Wigan first goal.
Wyn Mills
Wyn, i get all that but this game flipped too quickly. When you are 2-0 or 2-1 up with 10 minutes to go or, most coaches would think of a defensive sub not an attacking one. I cant blame Arsene for that. 2-0 was enough to win that game and the defensive side of our game let us down.
Gael-Force
this is probably the lowest point in the season for me, sums up everything wrong with the team, both goalkeepers need to be leaving in the summer, they're both *****, how many points have they cost us this season
lukychmz
Thing is GF, we CAN'T defend a lead. It's been proven time and time again. And with Vermaelen out it was more true today than ever. Wenger couldn't strengthen our defence because he had no-one left. Our best form of defence today was actually attack.
Wyn Mills
What's Wenger's favourite line? "Judge me at the end of the season" Well here we are again. Potless. How many friggin years have we been hearing the same thing? We'll I think this time round people will be judging him. He can't hide behind players maturing anymore. He needs to hold up a mirror and recognise his own weaknesses. players like Fabregas will not hang around forever worshipping a stubborn arrogant git.
Wyn Mills
