Wigan-Arsenal Team Line-ups

Without Cesc Fabregas and Manuel Almunia, Sol Campbell is wearing the armband for the first time in about four years. The team he's leading out, however, is slightly less familiar with Craig Eastmond, Mikael Silvestre and Lukasz Fabianski standing in for Denilson in midfield, Thomas Vermaelen in defence and Manuel Almunia in goal respectively.

Here are the full squads playing at the DW Stadium today:

Wigan Starting Line-up
Kirkland, Melchiot, Gohouri, Bramble, Figueroa, Rodallega, Diame, Watson, McCarthy, N'Zogbia, Moreno

Wigan Substitutes
Stojkovic, Scharner, Scotland, Moses, Gomez, Sinclair, Boyce

Arsenal Starting Line-up
Fabianski, Sagna, Campbell, Silvestre, Clichy, Diaby, Rosicky, Eastmond, Nasri, Walcott, Bendtner

Arsenal Substitutes
Mannone, Traore, Eboue, Merida, Henderson, Vela, Van Persie

Come on you Gunners!

Sorry guys, just got around to putting up the teamsheets. Chat away! Hmmm end-of-season stuff so far, we need to up the tempo although it may be slightly tougher with the personnel today. We must see the likes of Rosicky and Diaby step up big time after the game at WHL.

Hi Guys. New member here. I was hoping that we could win this convincingly to make up on the goal difference a bit as I dont see us doing it in the remaining games. But I think this may well finish 1-0. Diaby and Walcott need to learn to pull the trigger at times as they got into a couple of decent positions but their indecisiveness lets them down. Still here's hoping for a goal before half time. AW should bring on RVP in the second half though.

Hey welcome TGB! Do check out the forums as well - we're chatting about this game and many other issues there. Yeah I was finding Theo and Diaby a bit frustrating to watch with their Hleb-esque reluctance to just shoot. Now Theo's playing a bit more naturally and when he thinks less and acts more intuitively and confidently, he looks better.

Agree TGB, our reluctance to shoot is infuriating at times. I don't think we have any chance of making up the goal difference anyway but hope we can grind out 3 wins and Chelsea and Man U drop points.

Hi All. Thanks GoonerLou will head over to the forums to check it out! A major problem is I can see Liverpool getting something against the Chavs at Anfield which could help our cause, but I dont see ManUre dropping too many points. Seeing them win a 19th title will be sickening.

It wasn't so bad guys... Let's applaud the team. It has been a better season than last. Unfortunately, the same inexperience problems are holding us back. They got scared at 2-1 and then it was a collective meltdown. 3 players failed to close down N'zogbia on that 3rd shot. As i said last year, I want a better no1 than Almunia. He is a no2 at best and his absence today on a 'wrist' injury was strange at best. The other keepers (Fabianski, Mannone) should be sent on long loans to get experience because they are not good enough yet. I feel bad for Fabianski because his confidence must be getting lower because he always seem to make a blunder when he gets his chance (remember Porto). Goalkeeping is one area where you cannot gamble or educate young players as every mistake is likely to be punished. Let's take our young keepers out before their morale is shot down. We need an experienced hand in goal. Look at ManU, last year Ben Foster was meant to challenge Van Der Sar who is in his 40s. When VdS got injured, Foster looked like a mental wreck or a fish out of water. As much as i cant stand Ferguson, the man can't be wrong all the time after all the trophies he has won. Come on Arsene, do the sensible thing. Come on you gunners. Still proud of what these guys have done this year but they need some help to be winners.

The ball wasn't sticking to Bendtner and Wigan just developed the confidence to come forward. What any sane manager would have done would be to introduce more attacking threat. Wenger did nothing. gunnerpig, you are right about many players coasting through their seasons. Doing their job just about adequately to keep their jobs. But we need some of them to do an outstanding job or leave. Time is indeed up for some of them. For example - I dont think we will see Almunia starting again for us this season (maybe even next). It seems no coincidence that Almunia didn't play today after AW saying two days back that Almunia was not his long term no 1.

Players get tired or complacent. When that happens a manager has to have the tactical awareness to change things. No point Wenger saying the players on the pitch should have done it. Yes, they should have, but they didn't for 10 minutes and he did nothing. There's absoluetly no point having a predatory striker like Van Persie sitting on the bench if you're not going to use him. Would Ferguson have left Rooney on the bench when Wigan scored their first comeback goal?

We are just not hard to beat enough. Today we were complacent on the ball, and worse off the ball too. Some of our players were watching the game as spectators. Not enough of our players are ready to do the dirty work. As an example (he's not the only one), Diaby stands idle assuming that Sagna or Sol will get the better of the attacker and then feed him the ball nicely so he can go wandering upfield and score a beauty. We are too good to do the dirty work.

I watched El Classico last week and it was a pleasure to watch two such demanding competent goalkeepers. It really hit home just how far Almunia is from that standard. I think Arsene realised after the Barcelona game that we need to spend and get rid of some of this ballast. I bloody hope he did anyway!

Fair enough Wyn Mills. It did look like AW had his standard substitutions list ready when we were 2-0 up (i.e consolidation by bringing on Eboue and taking TR7 off as he doesn't think his fitness is top notch over 90 mins) and then it was too late to change them! But still primary responsibility for the defeat still has to be taken by the players. They showed no urgency, maturity or composure worthy of our club.

GF, I hear what you're saying. But we're already down to many of our 2nd or even 3rd string players, especially in defence. I don't necessarily expect someone like Eastmond to last a whole 90 minutes in a top flight game. But its really complacent thinking to expect you can beat any premiership team with your supporting cast, especially away from home. The team haven't relied on RVP for a good part of the season, but today he was available. Why not play him, especially as Bendtner wasn't providing any sort of distraction to Wigan in the 2nd half?

Gunnerpig, Valdes the barca keeper is not even certain to go to the world cup. he's fighting for the 3rd keeper spot, the one who's unlikely to play. To be honest, i can't really rate valdes because barca do a bery good job of keeping the ball so he doesnt have to intervene so often. He makes mistakes too. Obviously almunia is not even in the spain national team reckoning. Lehman, Seaman made mistakes at times too but they had presence. This year, we have suffered from too many gk errors.

Wyn Mills about RvP, when we were 2-0 up, the odds on a Wigan victory were miniscule. So I guess it was thought that RvP has to be wrapped up in cotton wool for the game against Citeh. Looking at RvP's injury record and general bad luck anything is possible. Now in hindsight it does look like a blunder and sending RvP on in the 89th or 90th minute was too late. But then we are gifted with hindsight while the manager is not.

That was a bit of a disgrace eh. Disappointing, but not shocking. This team needs several kicks up their arse!! ******** useless****s. This has happened so often before - this team simply refuses to learn from its mistakes. I have a bit of sympathy for Fabianski coz he has good ability, but he needs to be sent on loan to a Championship side, and let him regain his confidence out of the limelight. The back 5 looked shaky for the last 15 mins, although Sol & Silvester dealt well with Wigan for 80 mins or so.

GF, those keepers do play for very good sides, granted. But their command of the area and how they organise and take crosses is far superior to Manuel.

GF, Wenger didn't bring RVP on until it was far too late to save the game. The initative had already been handed over to Wigan even before they scored. This defeat does far more damage to our morale for the city game than any possible injury to RVP. Wenger is normally so predictable, even scientific, about his substitutions that one wonders what on earth was going through his mind when the side conceeded that meek Wigan first goal.

Wyn, i get all that but this game flipped too quickly. When you are 2-0 or 2-1 up with 10 minutes to go or, most coaches would think of a defensive sub not an attacking one. I cant blame Arsene for that. 2-0 was enough to win that game and the defensive side of our game let us down.

this is probably the lowest point in the season for me, sums up everything wrong with the team, both goalkeepers need to be leaving in the summer, they're both *****, how many points have they cost us this season

Thing is GF, we CAN'T defend a lead. It's been proven time and time again. And with Vermaelen out it was more true today than ever. Wenger couldn't strengthen our defence because he had no-one left. Our best form of defence today was actually attack.

What's Wenger's favourite line? "Judge me at the end of the season" Well here we are again. Potless. How many friggin years have we been hearing the same thing? We'll I think this time round people will be judging him. He can't hide behind players maturing anymore. He needs to hold up a mirror and recognise his own weaknesses. players like Fabregas will not hang around forever worshipping a stubborn arrogant git.
