Barca Voice Fake Ethics But Tapping Up Continues

As the media circus goes mental amidst rumours that Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas has told Arsene Wenger that he wants to leave The Gunners, we are once again treated to a few moral pontificating sound-bytes from the Barcelona's Txiki Begiristian.

'It's great news that he wants to come here and I think that one day Cesc will have to come to Barca,' he told the club's official website.

'But what matters is Arsenal and what their decision is. They think he is a very important player for them. We have to respect that. At times the wishes of players do not come true because they are under contract.'

'That he says that he wants to come to Barca is a synonym that things are being done well here.

I don't know when but I have the impression that he is a Barca player and that he will enjoy it very much.'

'I wish it was as soon as possible. But we have to respect Arsenal's wishes and the contract he has.'

Considering that Cesc, Wenger and members of our board have consistently stated that we want him at the club for the foreseeable future, 'respecting our wishes' would constitute as pissing off once and for all and leaving us alone.

Stop hiding behind mock-ethics, pretending and appearing to be doing the right thing whilst all the time blatantly and publicly tapping up our finest asset.

Well said Rocky. Barcelona are the perfect embodiment of that old adage "Beauty is only skin deep." All pretty football on the outside but ugly as sin underneath. Their behaviour of openly tapping up the player of another club and using all the forces of darkness of trying to get at him is quite despicable. Another tactic they have been using this past 24 hours is trying to put a wedge between Arsenal fans and their captain, trying to erode their hitherto rock solid trust in him by releasing statements of "he said this" and "he said that." I am trying very hard to stand up to this assault but it getting harder by the hour. Barcelona cannot be trusted to act with propriety, therefore it is time for Arsenal or Cesc himself to speak directly and tell us what is really going on.

What scum. I hate the way their league's two competitive teams just collect players like effing pokemon. I hope "280 million no trophies Real" actually give these****s a beating next season, then hopefully every other player will slow down on "dreaming" of playing for Barca and they won't treat Arsenal like a feeder club. In the opinion of this Chelsea fan, the very least Fabregas can do to thank Wenger and Arsenal, if he leaves, is to publically express vague interest in moving to Citeh so they instantly make an obscene bid which means you guys get a good price for him from Barca.

I don't trust anything coming out of Barcelona's hierarchy, and I doubt they are just reacting... politics aside, based on what we've heard, it's conceivable that Cesc is driving this after having his head turned... it'll be a very sad day if he goes now and it also exposes Wenger a bit - like Cesc saying "I'm grateful for what I learnt here but I need to play in a better team and now"... it hurts to say it, but in a way I can almost get my head around that... Whatever happens, I want us to come out of it fighting!

It may turn on the fact that Barca can't or won't pay Arsenal's price, and Cesc won't make any demands of the club because he has too much respect for AW and the club. arseblogger has a great post today on all this.

I think it's a mixture of both, Cesc and Barca. The way Barca have conducted themselves, not just now, but throughout the seven years Cesc has been with us, has been disgusting. I understand perfectly the reasons why Cesc wants to leave, but there is a CORRECT way of doing things, and this is not the way. Yes, Cesc wants to join Barca and Barca want Cesc, but they have to overcome two very big obstacles before they jump into bed together. 1. Arsenal must AGREE to allow Cesc to leave, and 2. Barca must pay the transfer amount set by Arsenal. If Arsenal don't agree to sell him, or the transfer price cannot be agreed by both parties, then Cesc remains at Arsenal. SIMPLES.

True jaelle, though Arsene doesn't like to hang onto players whose heads are turned, which weakens our bargaining position a bit (to the tune of 5-10m in this case!) If Cesc has really asked to leave, then I think asking him to stay another year is not useful as we would be better off starting to ring changes now rather than delay for another year. That's being practical but on the other had I think: please stay a bit more as I would love to see him lift a trophy for us - something he deserves for his application alone! I really hope we resolve this one way or another very soon as I can't stand the mental toture!

I think there's a decent chance that AW can convince Cesc to stay for at least 1 more season. Apparently Barca think they shouldn't have to pay too much because he was their player and they trained him, which is c-r-a-p. He's our player, we've developed him since he was 16, he's not the same player he was. CR, you said "I understand perfectly the reasons why Cesc wants to leave, but there is a CORRECT way of doing things, and this is not the way" - I agree re Barca but not Cesc. Apparently Cesc did the right thing: flew over personally to set up a private mtg with AW and talk things out. Ballague got the story. You can criticize Cesc and his agent for letting Ballague get hold of the story but they know it would've been impossible to keep the story secret, so they chose the one journo who's interviewed Cesc many times (Ballague supports Espanyol, btw, not Barca). Anyway, Cross, Henry Winter and other journos have said Arsenal are going to make it difficult for Barca and I can't see Cesc fighting back, he loves Arsenal too much. He might be convinced to stay 1 more season.

All clubs tap up players, it is a fact of life. Some are more blatant than others, sometimes it is a club simply responding to the desires of a player. A quick comment here and there to unsettle a player is done by every club. Whoever is signed as a replacement, has probably been induced to leave in one manner or another. And the signing of established international David Villa for 34m has probably set the ball park fee for a player. Is he retained, becomes disillusioned and is value at half the price in 12 months time?

and as for Fabregas it seems a bizarre move and you have to wonder if there is something else driving him towards this. He's a central figure at one of Europe's richest clubs, yet wants to move to a team where I find it very unlikely, on recent form, that it would be an easy task to dislodge Xavi, Iniesta and Busquets, all of whom are ahead of him both domestically as well as with the National team as well as youngsters like Gai Assulin coming through

The thought of Cesc leaving like this is difficult to take, I'm afraid it's a wound that won't go away easily and we could suffer the repurcussions in the next seasons as we transition yet again. Our only truly world-class players are Cesc and RvP in my opinion. We needed to add 3 more, not lose our best one, probably the finest midfielder of his generation. If Cesc possessed either one of those two characteristics, he would stay put for now, improving even more under AW's tutelage, retaining captain's status, a guaranteed starting place and the continuing sky-high profile assured by the EPL's competitiveness. By June 2012, Iniesta and Xavi will be two years older and Cesc will be even more valuable to Barca as his stature and experience grows. Badge-kissing ought to be outlawed.

Badge-kissing and talking from the heart are, in this case, rational - emotional as well - but none the less rational. He realises what the club has done for him and wants to thank those involved for the support. But there were times this season, especially at Stamford Bridge, when you could see that he knew he wasn't playing in a team of winners. He's not delusional. When you know you have to leave something you love, you do as much as you can to show your appreciation for what it's done for you, whilst in this case keeping your mouth shut about leaving - you don't want to cause a stir in the middle of the season. Unfortunately, some will interperet these actions retrospectively as being false. It must be tough. I don't think his leaving this summer is inevitable, but certainly it will be on his mind more than ever.

You can't blame him either. You could tell from his body language after the spankings against Man Utd and Chelsea at home (again) were really hurting him. Watching his teammates from his youth team like Messi and Pique playing an amazing brand of football and winning is simply too much to resist. Martin Samuel wrote a very good article in the Mail and made an interesting point about if it was Arsenal that had won lots of trophies the last 5 years and Barca that hadn't, would Cesc still want to leave? No, of course not. This is the other flaw in the project. Henry didn't want to stick around waiting for the team to mature and neither does Cesc. It's heart-wrenching though and I can see us moving out the CL positions next season if he goes.
Gooner_Vin

20/05/2010 13:32:00

Exactly, Vin. Would Cesc want to leave if this team had shown any real progress in getting past this 3rd place/4th place rut we're in? Cesc is in the same category of young world class players like Cronaldo, Messi, Rooney -- they're of similar age. He's watched them get loads of trophies and awards. While he languishes with a team of coasters and chokers. However, today I think Julie may be right: CESC IS GOING NOWHERE THIS SEASON. I watched the events of yesterday with Barca bringing in Villa and read some of the Spanish press, as well as Barca blogs. Just read arseblog, he's got it right, it fits entirely with what a lot of pundits are saying: Arsenal have the upper hand in this, esp. because Barca are in serious debt. It's not just the huge sum they just paid for Villa. They're supposed to be renovating Camp Nou, a project that apparently is costing them a huge chunk of change. Arsenal hold all the cards in this (at least financially) and the way Barca have behaved has probably ratcheted up the resentment and anger at the club, making them harden even more. Arsenal aren't interested in Toure (nor is he in us) nor Ibra, the only 2 players Barca can offer in any sale. And I don't think Arsenal will accept 30m. If Barca really want this deal to go thru, they'll have to dig very deep for the cash. Now Arsenal's one weak point is that they risk keeping a player who's forced to stay where he doesn't want to. But Cesc loves the club and Arsene. And Arsene's great at persuasion when he has to be.

The other thing is this proprietary c-r-a-p talk about Cesc being one of their own--they talk as if it's supposed to be a factor in the deal, as if they own him. You'd think they never take teenagers from other clubs. Barca and RMadrid poach young players from all over Spain (not to mention South America and Portugal). Barca poached Puyol at age 17, Busquets at 17, Messi at 13 and Jeffren at 16. I suppose their former clubs hold some kind of proprietary hold over them too?
jaelle

They can ***** right off with that proprietary *********. Arsenal FC made Cesc the player he is today, taught him everything he knows and therefore based on the fact that we have moulded Cesc into a world class player, we are therefore entitled to ask for a fee reflecting his world class status is a similar vein to the fees of Cristina, Kaka, Ibra etc and all the other big money signings you have seen recently. And you know what the added advantage is and what Cesc has on all of them? Cesc hasnt even reached his prime yet, lord knows how phenomenal this kid is going to be in the next 4-5 years when he is in his prime. Barca will probably reap the rewards of that and therefore they should stump up what we ask for. Its that simple.

Nice points jaelle and T-G-B. I think a valuation should be based on what it'll cost to replace the player in question. Regardless of who trains him, or who he ' loves ', it would probably cost Arsenal up to 80m to replace him and re-build the team.

I'm sorry, I don't see any replacement for Cesc. Like Jaelle said, he's one of the finest players of his generation along with Messi, Ronaldo and Rooney, and you can't just pick them up as and when you see fit. And Nasri cannot replace Cesc. Noone can read the game or pick out a penetrative pass like Cesc (except for Xavi). If he did leave, what about if we picked up Deco for a season and Joe Cole on a free transfer?

Oh dear, they may not be able to make a bid after all. Hahaha!! Word of advice to Farca, check your finances first and make sure you can actually afford the player before you start proclaiming in the press how you will endeavour to sign him. Its just common sense.

To those of you slagging him off, id be praying for your sake they throw Biscuits into any deal as hes better than any of your current crop, that much was evident when he bossed the park at the emirates. Something like 30m and him wouldnt be too shabby a deal!

I rate Busquets highly as a player despite his theatrics, thought he was one of the best Barca players in the first half at the emirates. I don't think Barca would wan't to let him go, so little chance of us getting him.

Nah, Fabregas won't be going to BarTHElona cos he wouldn't have a prayer of getting in the team. He'll go to Chelsea instead when Frank Pantslard fecks off to Madrid for a sunset smooch with Jose. Don't worry, we'll send the Hudd as a replacement. With a year's supply of his food arriving by HMS Endevour.

bowie, spot-on, Busquets is quality and there's no way Barca would sell him to anyone, he's integral to their squad. Interesting tweet from John Cross a half hour ago: "Think Barca will make move for Cesc soon. But #Arsenal standing firmer than firm. Admire their stance and increasingly I think they can win."

I hope that we don't use our newly found ' don't mess with us on transfers ' stance if some club makes a bid for Almunia !

Lol CR I can imagine someone like Sevilla or Deportivo coming to us and saying ' we are willing to pay 10 million for Almunia' to which our board says '***** off, we want 20 million or no deal!'

You guys are cracking me up, pleeeeaase. Been on another round trip and been unable to hook up. Fingers crossed on the Cesc matter, though. Coward Webb is CL final Ref. Good grief; watch out for one big call to hand the game to Inter (Bayern eliminated ManU, his favourite side) then.

Will be a good move for fabregas, deserves it considerin arsenals trophyless season again! Imagine xavi busquets and fabregas midfield with iniesta villa messi in attack and pedro, bojan and maybe ibrahimovich on the bench unstopable!

Why should Arsenal sell Fabregas for less than his market value? I don't care if he wants to go to Barcelona. He's contracted to us or 5 years and is worth at least 60million. Its up to the spaniards to find the money, not ask us to take a financial hit. I'm sure Cesc understands this which is why he's saying its in the club's hands. If we bend over and drop our shorts then there's no-one to blame but the board. Don't forget those catalans already owe us a shed load of cash, so the last thing we should be doing is giving our best player away at a bargain price.
