Wenger Still Browsing In Football's Shop Window

Arsene Wenger says he isn't finished in the transfer market, just 24 hours after signing 24 year old defender Laurent Koscielny. Double Hurrah!

More specifically Mr Wenger says he's still on the look out for another defender, presumable another centreback considering we have two of the finest full backs in the league and probably the best back up full backs in Europe.

We identified Koscielny as a very, very strong centre half,' Said AW

'He can be an outstanding addition to our team. But it is not over, we are still open to buy. We are still on the market for another defensive player because we have the need for one more.'

Having lost Gallas, Campbell and Sylvestre (Triple Hurrah!) this summer we were down to our last two central defenders, but having completed the sign of Laurent Koscielny. we've got (apparently) 3 very good centre halves, so one more would be top top, considering we also have Song for cover in case of emergencies I'd say the gaffer would have done his job to rebuild the defence admirably.

Yes!! Looks like another defender is incoming. Come on AW bring in Hangeland! Now that Woy has gone to Anfield now is a great time to strike and sign him!

He probably means Bendtner coming back from injury is like a new signing

I'm hearing Schwarzer has passed a medical. I am unbelievably underwhelmed. I have to concede that I fully agree with everyone who sayd Wenger has a blind spot for keepers. Schwarzer is ancient as well as a bit cack, I genuinely believe that is zero improvement on Almunia.

Buying Schwarzer would be step-down in my opinion. I read on Goon Blog that he passed a second medical, but earlier today he also stated that the club confirmed that they did arrange an interview with the kenyan newspaper when they themselves denied it. So I remain hopeful that this is made up. But if it is true it really shows the lack of quality goalkeepers available in todays game when we have to spend £4 million on someone like Schwarzer.

I guess we'll see how good the source is in the next few days! But they don't even steer me wrong. I must say, if Joe Cole and Schwarzer really are part of Arsene's transfer plans, then I can see a bit of credence in the whispers that Cesc's desire to move was expediated by Arsene's summer plans. In my humble opinion, those two players are not an improvement on anything we have.

There isn't much difference between Almunia and Schwarzer in terms of ability at all, but our team and fans have lost complete confidence in Almunia, and that just transfers round the rest of the team an into the stands. I think it could work out ok, and it probably won't be long term, just till next season or so to bring Schezezenznznnnny through. I on the other hand would like Joe Cole on a free, always been a fan.

@ LD. granted technically he's probably at the same level as Almunia, and will no doubt make the odd cock up but everyone, and most importantly our defense have lost faith in Al so having an experienced prem keeper between the sticks is our best option for the new season. If Schwarzer fails to impress at least we can say we tried something new and the following season Tech9 should hopefully have had a years worth experience in the prem and will step up to the plate (or goal line if you like). I really don't see much other viable alternative. Every gk that has been linked to us fails the grade in one way or other.

@ajwb. I'd go with James preferably over Schwarzer but he seems to have escaped arsenes radar. Maybe now he's been told he needs to take a pay cut at Portsmouth Arsene will receive a little pop-up notification on his blackberry saying "hello"

@Rocky. Sorry bud, didnt see your last post and i made the exact same observation. I guess it's good that we can see what wenger is wanting to do and so far im very happy with what he's done. I'd say we're half way there, and an additional cd and new gk seem certain now. anything else will be a bonus.

Another "defensive player" could mean a DM. It's possible that Arsene could use Song at the back. Although personally I think that would be a waste of our best DM. We also have Tom Cruise coming thro' but I have no idea how close he is to being blooded anywhere near the first 11 other than the League Cup.

Joe Cole on a free TF would be fine, but he'd have to negotiate on his wages. He still put in some very decent performances for Chelsea last season.

I think some of the negative reaction to Schwartzer is a little bit mis-placed. OK he's not Pepe Reina but still a top goalkeeper. Bearing in mind the outgoing's at CB this year we need an old head behind what could be a very young back line this season. As for JC, I think we should get him if Cesc goes...... and not if he doesn't.

PLEASE DEAR GOD, DO NOT BRING FELIPE MELO TO ARSENAL!!! If I see that man in a Brazilian shirt again, I will stop supporting my national team. It would kill me to see him in an Arsenal shirt. Mixed feelings re JCole. I do think he's a fine player, one of the few bright sparks in the England national team. Couldn't believe Capello was so stupid to prefer Milner to him. But we don't need anymore injury-riddled players and I still resent some of his public comments re Arsenal in the past.

I think it's instructive that Capello, Hiidink, Scolari, Ancelotti and Mourinho never saw him as a first chocie and never ever selected him for big games. Because he's too careless with the ball and overcomplicates things. He can create a goal with a moment of brilliance, but is just as likely to lose it trying a Cruyff turn on the halfway line. It's why he never gets selected against big opposition.

Good point, LD, it's true all those managers didn't quite trust him. I've just always identified him as a player who comes on (for Chelsea or England) when the team is needing a spark, something to happen, and he opens up play and suddenly his team has another dimension to it.

insider says, our wage bill is dwarfed by you guys. £101.3m spent on wages compared to our £52.9m. Good old Harry. Sure Arsene spends less on transfer fee's (although still spends a good £25m a season) but your wages are massive. jaja.

It's all relative, Hud, and related to income. Your figures are probably a good indication of the success and size of our respective clubs. Cole would be a good signing for you, not for us tho, and he won't break your bank on his own but there's no denying Harrys track record. Anyway, i'd prefer to talk about the arsenal, being an arsenal site and all, so I won't go on about that subject here. no offence!

It's about time AW started bringing on English talant. I've had it with these players like Fibreglass, learning their game at Arsenal and then flitting to Barca or Real at the first opportunity. No wonder he can't build a team to win something.

Fine LD. One day you'll wake-up (and it's not a million moons away i should say) and there won't be a single Englishman left capable of playing in the premier league. Still, you can content yourself with the fact that your club has kick-started the careers of the French national team. Thank god, for Arsene, what a wonderful job you've done for us all (slurp, slurp, lick)!!! daddyreddog, you couldn't have been more right to speak out against the transfer policies of this man. It's an absolute scandal.

For the last time TRH, if you want to discuss that subject, start a thread on the forum and stop trolling unrelated articles, it spoils everyone's ability to converse the subject at hand. Why is that so difficult for you to understand? Here's the link Secondly, debating the subject with you is worthless anyway because you ignore every point that is put to you. All I've said above is that it's a folly to believe English players are more loyal than foreign players, which shouldn't have to be pointed out to the supporter of a club who hung an effigy of their former captain and Academy graduate. That had little to do with your little wind up crusade, but you went on your Richard Littlejohn rant anyway. Take it to a thread and the people that want to talk about it can. If you can't follow the very simple rules of the site, then take your bile elsewhere please. Thank you.

England weren't robbed, they were well beaten. My point with the Henry saga was not that the Irish shouldn't have been upset- I'd be gutted if Arsenal lost a huge game like that. My point was that it was amazing that the press and some of the Irish players acted as if it was the only piece of injustice ever to happen in football hitory. Luis Fabiano and Suarez have been guilty of worse handballs this World Cup, but because the media didn't make a big fuss, neither player is being treated as the leper Henry was.

LD, ....more like the media didn't make a big fuss because neither injustice was against a British side. A corollary is how FIFA is being harangued into re-visiting technology/additional officials becuse "England was robbed". Something Mr. Wenger had for long, advocated, with little support, until now.

Best way to get yourself villified in the international sporting press as a cheat and a diver is to do it against a home nation. When the British press get into a tizzy over something, it's spread throughout the int'l press, incl. here in the US where various outrages expressed by the English football press are covered even by non-football pundits--but also in Latin America. Whereas equivalent big stories in say, the French or Italian or Spanish football press are mostly ignored. So that's a lesson for all footballers: cheat only against non-home nations and you'll be fine. Oh, and it's even better if you're Irish/British. You'll get away with it even more.

Schwarzer isn't a bad deal at all. The key is that he is proven in the premiership, unlike some of the other names being bandied about, who would take time to acclimatise to the English game. Schwarzer doesn't tend to make howlers in the way that Almunia and Fabianski do. He's a very good stopper, but possibly suspect when coming of his line to claim balls in the air.
